AbstractGhosts appear in a great number of fictional works from the early modern period to the present. Yet, to this date no systematic study of this very heterogeneous textual corpus has been undertaken. This paper proposes as a useful starting point a review of figures and discourses of spectrality, mainly in Republican-era literary and critical texts, that focuses in particular on the different meanings and usages of the term

The concept of inter-subjectivity serves as a starting point to discuss a book-writing competition sponsored by John Fryer in 1895 and the rise of modern Chinese fiction. His departure from China the following year had two possible reasons: money and the expectations. The money issue was related to the prompt initiation and excessive expences of this contest; besides, the contest specific requirements contributed greatly to the identity awareness of the Chinese writers. The horizon of one’s expectations touches the problem of subjectivities. A fusion of the expectations of the missionary and those of Chinese literati manifested itself in The New-Age Novel as inter-subjectivity. Nevertheless, the expression of imagined sovereignty of Chinese literati in the works presented at the contest went beyond Fryer’s expectations and gave birth to not only simply a Western impact and Chinese response and a Sino-centric pattern both which served as a spur to the rise of modern Chinese novel.

Although “etiquette” is the essence of traditional culture in China, due to the development of modern society, its perspective should include the requirement of human sympathy, transformation of objects, and the role or duty associated with one’s title so that an appropriate manner can be well maintained. The times have changed and if the traditional etiquette cannot follow the steps of civilization, it will be eliminated. Contemporary Chinese weddings have become popularized and funerals religionized; however, they cannot completely meet the expectations of the Confucianists, but rather follow the development of etiquette, while conforming to the principles underlying the legislation and implementation of the rules of etiquette. Furthermore, integration can be found in the phenomenon of popularized weddings and religionized funerals, fully making it obvious that religious behavior has combined with the local wedding ceremonies. Because of the influence of Taoism and Buddhism, local folklore characteristics can be seen in funeral rites. As a result, if the connotations of the etiquette are maintained, whether it is a popularized or religionized ceremony, such etiquette can still be accepted by the society.

This book starts with an overall background of rapid progress of economic development in recent China under a shift from ‘Made in China' to ‘Created in China'. Such a background shapes the starting point of this book and reflects a question: Why should we focus on the topic of creativity and innovation in Chinese universities? This chapter interprets the meaning of a political goal of ‘innovation-oriented nation', the link between creativity and innovation, and the barriers of traditional culture to develop innovation capability in China. All these points underpin why Chinese universities should put creativity on the top of the agenda. This will lay basis in later chapters that address problem-based learning (PBL) as a good strategy of facilitating creativity among young Chinese talents.

The democratic situation in China is deeply influenced by the traditional culture. This article attempt to answer the question why there is no democracy in Chinese traditional culture from historical institutionalism perspective. Path dependence plays the vital role in this process. The starting point is set in Qin Dynasty. After that, the authoritarian regime has been strengthened from four aspects: the bureaucratic system, the Confucian theory, the imperial examination system, and rewards and punishing measures. These measures work from the institutions to people’s inner world. The authoritarian culture became the orthodox value in Chinese traditional culture. The authoritarian regime and traditional culture have been intertwined and strengthened each other. That is a process of path dependence from historical institutionalism perspective. This article shows us a framework of how to observe this process.

About thirty years ago Yang Mo's novel The Song of Youth was made into a movie portraying young people committed to change and revolution. In the ideological confusion one sentence rang out very clearly, as the words of Maxim Gorky were used to express the essence of Chinese culture: "In this world the most glorious thing is to be a man" (Zai shijieshang zui guangrong de shi jiu shi zuo yige ren). The death of Mao and the change of political environment was the starting point for a new way of thinking. Maols political and ideological role has been delicately dealt with by trying to preserve the legitimacy of the revolution while discardingsome of the basic elements of Mao Zedong-thought. Thenext move has been to look towards traditional Chinese philosophy to serve ideological development and national pride.
