A series of silicone modified polyurethane(Si-PU) block polymers were synthesized from using polybutylene adipate (PBA), methane-4-4’-diisocyanate(MDI), 1,4–butanediol(BDO) and hydroxyl terminated polysiloxane(HO-PDMS). The effect of synthesis condition on the shear strength was investigated. The influnce of the content of HO-PDMS on the absorption properties of PU was tested. The structure of the synthetic products was characterized by Infrared Spectrum, the surface hydrophobicity was examined by surface contact angle and the scanning electron microscopy(SEM), respectively. The results showed that the silicone chain segments were incorporated into PU macromolecule. The shear strength firstly decreased slightly and then decressed greatly with increasing the HO-PDMS content. But the modified polyurethane had low surface energy, surface water contact was improved by 25°C, and the water resistance was also improved.

In this paper, an environmentally friendly waterborne polyurea (WPUA) emulsion and its corresponding coating were prepared, which was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To improve the performance of the coating, we doped sulfonated graphene (SG) into WPUA to prepare composite coating (SG/WPUA). SG can be uniformly dispersed in WPUA emulsion and is stable for a long time (28 days) without delamination. The water resistance of the composite coating with 0.3 wt.% SG nanofiller was improved; the water contact angle (WCA) result was SG/WPUA (89°) > WPUA (48.5°), and water absorption result was SG/WPUA (2.90%) < WPUA (9.98%). After water immersion treatment, SEM observation revealed that the SG/WPUA film only generated enlarged microcracks (100 nm) instead of holes (150–400 nm, WPUA film). Polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) tests show that SG nanosheets with low doping content (0.3 wt.%) are more conducive to the corrosion resistance of WPUA coatings, and the model was established to explain the mechanism.

A novel waterborne polyurethane (WPU) modified by tung oil was prepared with 2,4-tolylene diisocyanate, polyethylene glycol, dimethylol propinic acid, 1,4-butanedilo as main materials via acetone process. The structure of WPU molecule was characterized by FT-IR. Adhesive behavior for non-polar and/or low surface energy soft packing films was studied. Water resistance of films were evaluated by water contact angle and water uptake and thermal properties determined by thermal analysis instruments. The results show that the modified WPU films have good water and heat resistance. Both of modified WPUs or not have good adherence on BOPP films.

This paper reports on the effect of air plasma on the FRP surface wettability via change of the water contact angle. The aim is to alter the surface in a manner and scale resulting in stronger bonding strength between FRP and wood. The specimens are exposed to the direct current discharge. The irradiation time and power are variables. Goniometry is employed to determine the contact angle of FRP surface. The plasma treatment leads to radical generation and activation of such agents as oxygen, thus the surface contact angle decreases significantly. The shear strength of samples of wood reinforced by treated FRP is also given to show the bond quality at the FRP-wood interface.

In this present work, we aim to improve the hydrophobicity of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface. Various heights of 3D PDMS micropillars were fabricated via grayscale photolithography, and improved wettability was investigated. Two approaches of PDMS replication were demonstrated, both using a single master mold to obtain the micropillar arrays. The different heights of fabricated PDMS micropillars were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and a surface profiler. The surface hydrophobicity was characterized by measuring the water contact angles. The fabrication of PDMS micropillar arrays was shown to be effective in modifying the contact angles of pure water droplets with the highest 157.3-degree water contact angle achieved by implementing a single mask grayscale lithography technique.

Low surface energy coatings have gained considerable attention due to their superior surface hydrophobic properties. However, their abrasion resistance and sustainability of surface hydrophobicity are still not very satisfactory and need to be improved. In this work, a series of utraviolet (UV)-curable fluorosiloxane copolymers were synthesized and used as reactive additives to prepare polyurethane acrylate coatings with low surface energy. The effect of the addition of the fluorinated graft copolymers on the mechanical durability and surface hydrophobicity of the UV-cured hybrid films during the friction-annealing treatment cycles was investigated. The results show that introducing fluorosiloxane additives can greatly enhance surface hydrophobicity of the hybrid film. With addition of 2 wt.% fluorosiloxane copolymers, the water contact angle (WCA) value of the hybrid film was almost tripled compared to that of the pristine PU film, increasing from 58° to 144°. The hybrid film also showed enhanced abrasion resistance and could withstand up to about 60 times of friction under a pressure of 20 kPa. The microstructure formed in the annealed film was found to contribute much to achieve better surface hydrophobicity. The polyurethane acrylate/fluorinated siloxane resin hybrid film prepared in this study exhibits excellent potential for applications in the low surface energy field.

Polypropylene (PP) film was used as coating to improve the hydrophobicity of corrosive aluminum surface. A micro-porous film with compound nanoparticles was obtained on the aluminum alloy substrate using the corrosion method and coated PP. The water contact angle (WCA) of superhydrophobic surface is 157°. The superhydrophobic property is attributed to this special surface morphology and low surface energy PP. Aggregated nanoparticles would help to increase the surface hydrophobicity.

A series of waterborne polyurethanes (WPU) with crosslinked siloxane were obtained through introducing 3-(2-aminoethylamino)propyldimethoxymethylsilane (APTS) into WPU by in situ polymerization. The properties of WPU modified by APTS were studied through a variety of experimental methods. The water contact angle of the WPU coating surface increased from 64° to 86°, and the water resistance reduced to 3.90% when 3 wt% APTS was added, which improved the coating surface hydrophobicity. Firstly, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and 1H-NMR spectra demonstrated the successful incorporation of APTS to polyurethanes and completed the hydrolytic condensation reaction-generated Si–O–Si crosslinking structure. Furthermore, the surface energy of the membrane was reduced when the crosslinking structure migrated and enriched on the surface of film. Besides, the crosslinking structure was abundant, and the distribution of siloxane in WPU was more uniform.

In order to obtain stable superhydrophobicity, suitable hydrophobic treatment agents should be selected according to different material properties. In this paper, cotton and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) fabrics were respectively coated with dodecyl methacrylate (LMA) via argon combined capacitively coupled plasma (CCP), and the surface hydrophobicity and durability of the treated cotton and polyester fabrics are also discussed. An interesting phenomenon happened, whereby the LMA-coated cotton fabric (Cotton-g-LMA) had better water repelling and mechanical durability properties than LMA-coated PET fabric (PET-g-LMA), and LMA-coated hydroxyl-grafted PET fabrics (PET fabrics were successively coated with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and LMA, PET-g-PEG & LMA) had a similar performance to cotton fabrics. The water contact angles of Cotton-g-LMA, PET-g-LMA and PET-g-PEG & LMA were 156°, 153° and 155°, respectively, and after 45 washing cycles or 1000 rubbing cycles, the corresponding water contact angles decreased to 145°, 88°, 134° and 146°, 127° and 143°, respectively. Additionally, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polyamides-6 (PA6) fabrics all exhibited the same properties as the PET fabric. Therefore, the grafting of hydroxyl can improve the hydrophobic effect of LMA coating and the binding property between LMA and fabrics effectively, without changing the wearing comfort.

Commercial adhesives present a high bond strength and water resistance, but they are considered non-healthier products. Chitosan can be considered as an interesting biosourced and biodegradable alternative, despite its low water resistance. Here, its wood bonding implementation and its tensile shear strength in dry and wet conditions were investigated depending on its structural characteristics. Firstly, the spread rate, open assembly time, drying pressure, drying temperature, and drying time have been determined for two chitosans of European pine double lap specimens. An adhesive solution spread rate of 1000 g·m−2, an open assembly time of 10 min, and a pressure temperature of 55 °C for 105 min led to a bond strength of 2.82 MPa. Secondly, a comparison between a high molecular weight/low deacetylation degree chitosan and a lower molecular weight/higher deacetylation degree chitosan was conducted. Tests were conducted with beech simple lap specimens in accordance with the implementation conditions and the conditioning treatments in wet and dry environments required for thermoplastic wood adhesive standards used in non-structural applications (EN 204 and EN 205). The results clearly revealed the dependence of adhesive properties and water resistance on the structural features of chitosans (molecular weight and deacetylation degree), explaining the heterogeneity of results published notably in this field.

Novel composite resins with dual absorption properties of water and oil are prepared by the polymerization of high internal phase emulsion (HIPEs) with n-butyl methacrylate as the external phase monomer and acrylamide as the internal phase monomer. The subsequent polymerization leads to the formation of water and oil dual-absorption composite resins. The morphology of porous structure and microcosmic phase separation after water/oil uptake is observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The water and oil absorbency strongly depend on composition. The composites with saturated water uptake could absorb the chloroform again but cant absorb water if saturated with chloroform first. And the resins exhibit great reusability, keeping almost constant absorbency. The present methodology could be a potential approach to obtain amphiphilic composites, which possess potential applications in the bioengineering, medical and industrial fields.
