The study aims to recovery of silver minerals from zinc leach residue by flotation method with mixed collectors, namely, ammonium dibutyl dithiophosphate (ADD) and diethyl dithiocarbamate (DD). The effect of key parameters, i.e., grinding fineness, dosage of collectors and dosage of sodium chloride on the flotation performance was investigated. The results indicate that dosages of ADD and DD have both significant effects on the flotation performance, and sodium chloride plays an important role in the increase of the grade of silver, by eliminating the detrimental effect of Zn2+ in the pulp. The optimum conditions for flotation of silver from the material were identified as grinding fineness of 90%, dosage of ADD at 400 g/t, dosage of DD at 75 g/t and dosage of NaCl at 60 g/t; under such a condition, a sliver recovery of 76.92% with a concentrate grade of 2012.30 g/t was achieved, and the tailing from the flotation has a lower sliver grade of 17.30g/t, with only 15.04% of silver lost in the tailing.

Luminescence-based assays for toxicants such as Microtox, ToxAlert, and Biotox have been used extensively worldwide. However, the use of these assays in near real time conditions is limited due to nonoptimal assay temperature for the tropical climate. An isolate that exhibits a high luminescence activity in a broad range of temperatures was successfully isolated from the mackerel,Rastrelliger kanagurta. This isolate was tentatively identified asPhotobacteriumsp. strain MIE, based on partial 16S rDNA molecular phylogeny. Optimum conditions that support high bioluminescence activity occurred between 24 and 30°C, with pH 5.5 to 7.5, 10 to 20 g/L of sodium chloride, 30 to 50 g/L of tryptone, and 4 g/L of glycerol as the carbon source. Assessment of near real time capability of this bacterial system, Xenoassay light to monitor heavy metals from a contaminated river running through the Juru River Basin shows near real time capability with assaying time of less than 30 minutes per samples. Samples returned to the lab were tested with a standard Microtox assay usingVibrio fishceri. Similar results were obtained to Xenoassay light that show temporal variation of copper concentration. Thus, this strain is suitable for near real time river monitoring of toxicants especially in the tropics.

The application of new chelating reagents on the flotation of copper minerals has been paid much attention in recent years. These collectors have successfully extracted the copper minerals from the low-grade refractory ores, and one of the most important collectors is the alkylhydroxamate-based chelating reagent which shows the excellent flotation performance to the copper oxide minerals. Furthermore, the mixture of various chelating reagents can recover the copper sulfides and oxides simultaneously from the complicated copper ores, which is attributed to the synergy among collectors. Thus we conclude that it is an important flotation method by using chelating collectors in conjunction with other traditional collectors, by which the synergy can break through the limitation of single reagent and enhance the flotation efficiency.

In this study, Al5083 alloy was deformed through equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) up to three passes. The ECAP was conducted at room temperature in a mold using route C. The microstructure evolution was investigated under optical microscopic observations. The grain size was measured using ImageJ software. Grain refinement from 145 µM (as received) to 37 µM (after third pass) was observed due to ECAP. The potentiodynamic polarization of the Al5083 alloy was obtained from a 3.5% sodium chloride solution. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed in the sodium chloride solution to study the alloy’s surface properties. Scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy were conducted after obtaining the corrosion performance. As a result, we found that ECAP processing leads to the grain refinement of the alloy, which causes a detrimental effect on the corrosion resistance property.

Cacao farming in the Philippines is continually expanding due to an influx of government support and funding. Although a comprehensive development program was implemented, the large volume of cacao biomass waste generated annually remains underutilized. In an attempt to provide a means of reusing this waste, we test the extent to which furfural can be extracted from cacao pod wastes. A box-behnken experimental design was used to obtain the optimal conditions in the acid-catalyzed extraction of crude furfural. Extraction time (min), hydrochloric acid concentration (M), and amount of sodium chloride (g) were found to have a significant influence on the extraction yield of crude furfural. Actual values of these independent variables were chosen on the basis of preliminary experimental results. Optimum conditions using ridge analysis were found to be: extraction time 35.0 min, hydrochloric acid concentration 5.0 M, and amount of sodium chloride 7.0 g. Furfural extraction was also performed at optimum conditions to assess the validity of the empirical model. In conclusion, the high furfural extraction yield obtained in our experiments presents an opportunity to harness these unregulated wastes in producing high quality products.
