The mechanical and electrical installation project is a major component of mechanical and electrical engineering project. With the rapid development of the construction industry, the scale of electromechanical installation project is expanding. But all kinds of installation project accidents (especially in construction stage) have attracted the attention of social. With the construction stage of electromechanical installation project as research object, the personnel risk factors are been analyzed. Furthermore the paper refines the intrinsic cause of the risk factors using the factor analysis method and SPSS. Finally the counter-measures are given.

The construction industry in Malaysia is very important for creating employment, both directly and indirectly. It faces two repeated problems during the construction stage: slippage of project-schedules, i.e. time overrun and overrun of project cost; to the dislike of owners, contractors and consultants. This paper studies the time delay and cost overrun factors for Design and Build D&B projects in Malaysia. A Questionnaire was used to collect data from practitioners and analyse the responses and rank the factors and groups on overall view of the contracting parties. Identified risk factors from the theoretical domain were used to prepare 79 time related question and 18 cost related question categorized in 9 groups and 1 group respectively. Total of 136 respondents recorded their ratings to the factors in the questionnaire. Labour-related group has the top 1 rank with RII 0.684. The results can be used as a guideline to successfully handle construction projects in Malaysia; contributing for better project performance and lead to positive risks, opportunities.

This paper presents an overview of the environmental sustainability concept through construction industry. The aim is to create a environmental sustainability through pre-construction stage. This could be achieved where as it is important to look into minimizing the impact on the environment. However, the enthusiasm in pursuing rapid development often causes environmental sustainability aspect being ignored. This research was conducted to study the level of environmental sustainability concern and practices in through pre- construction stage in construction industry. A selected of construction working managerial level were selected as respondents. Data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire. More than 70% respondents being interview and have high level of environmental concern but moderate level of environmental sustainability practices. Most of the respondents concern about environmental issues. The study also have positive perceptions on environmental sustainability. The findings showed that there is a positive and pro-active between the level of environmental sustainability concern and practices in construction management. This indicates that the higher the level of environmental concern, the higher the level of practices in environmental sustainability among project practitioners. The implication of the study showed that coordinate effort should be taken by construction practices during pre- construction stage to enhance environmental sustainability practices more effective through construction project.

With the continuous development of the socialist market economy, the construction industry has achieved rapid development and has good development prospects. However, the construction industry has experienced the transformation of China’s economic system from planned economy to market economy, and traditional management in construction engineering enterprises. The model has been unable to adapt to the new situation of the development of the construction industry, but it has limited the development of the enterprise to a certain extent. As an important part of enterprise management, engineering project construction management needs to realize the innovation of management mode to adapt to the current development situation. Starting from the necessity of construction engineering innovation, the basic principles of project management innovation are expounded, and an effective way of project construction management innovation is proposed.

Over the years, the development of construction project management methods has promoted the management of risk factors. This paper reviews the suggestions of risk management of follow-up audit in construction stage and evaluates its application in construction projects.

The application of analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to the risk analysis of port construction project was investigated. Firstly, the happening probabilities of various risk factors during port construction were calculated. Secondly, the aftereffects of the risks were concluded by consulting the experts. Thirdly, the weight of each risk factor was obtained by AHP. Finally, the total risk of port construction project could be evaluated by fuzzy comprehensive evaluation. This risk analysis method was applied to evaluate the total risk of a real port construction project, and the exemplification verified its feasibility.

PurposeThe digital revolution and the use of big data (BD) in particular has important applications in the construction industry. In construction, massive amounts of heterogeneous data need to be analyzed to improve onsite efficiency. This article presents a systematic review and identifies future research directions, presenting valuable conclusions derived from rigorous bibliometric tools. The results of this study may provide guidelines for construction engineering and global policymaking to change the current low-efficiency of construction sites.Design/methodology/approachThis study identifies research trends from 1,253 peer-reviewed papers, using general statistics, keyword co-occurrence analysis, critical review, and qualitative-bibliometric techniques in two rounds of search.FindingsThe number of studies in this area rapidly increased from 2012 to 2020. A significant number of publications originated in the UK, China, the US, and Australia, and the smallest number from one of these countries is more than twice the largest number in the remaining countries. Keyword co-occurrence is divided into three clusters: BD application scenarios, emerging technology in BD, and BD management. Currently developing approaches in BD analytics include machine learning, data mining, and heuristic-optimization algorithms such as graph convolutional, recurrent neural networks and natural language processes (NLP). Studies have focused on safety management, energy reduction, and cost prediction. Blockchain integrated with BD is a promising means of managing construction contracts.Research limitations/implicationsThe study of BD is in a stage of rapid development, and this bibliometric analysis is only a part of the necessary practical analysis.Practical implicationsNational policies, temporal and spatial distribution, BD flow are interpreted, and the results of this may provide guidelines for policymakers. Overall, this work may develop the body of knowledge, producing a reference point and identifying future development.Originality/valueTo our knowledge, this is the first bibliometric review of BD in the construction industry. This study can also benefit construction practitioners by providing them a focused perspective of BD for emerging practices in the construction industry.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse project risks in Ghana’s real estate construction industry in terms of likelihood of occurrence, severity of impact and controllability. Design/methodology/approach A quantitative research approach was used in this study to address the research objective. The study population consisted project managers, architects, surveyors and contractors from 17 members of the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA) in Ghana. Random stratified sampling technique was used to select 97 participants from these firms. A structured questionnaire was used to collect primary data, whereas descriptive statistics were used to present findings. Findings All risks identified have some level of likelihood of occurrence, extent of severity of impact and controllability. Market risks, technical risks and environmental risks are more likely to occur. Market risks, technical risks and environmental risks had the highest severity of impact. Financial risks, market risks, managerial risks and technical risks are the most controllable. Among all risks, environmental risks are the direst because they have high likelihood of occurrence and severity of impact but very low controllability. Real estate construction firms (developers) are therefore expected to prioritize remedy of environmental risks. Research limitations/implications The study is based on self-reported perception of project parties on the likelihood, severity of impact and controllability of real estate project risk factors. Firms outside of GREDA were not included in the survey. Therefore, generalisation of these risk factors for the entire construction industry should be done with caution. Practical implications The research results show that Ghanaian real estate developers are aware of the existence of the risks which impact on the performance of the industry. To effectively and efficiently manage these risk factors, project parties must understand the likelihood of occurrence, severity of impact and controllability of the risk factors, as well as individual firm’s responsibilities and capabilities to manage them. Such knowledge helps project managers to prioritise risks in managing them in the face of scarce resources. From an academic research perspective, the paper contributes to a conceptual risk assessment framework for the real estate industry. Originality/value The paper’s main contributions relate to the introduction of real estate construction sector-specific factors to project risk management modelling.

Purpose The construction industry faces three emergent developments that in all likelihood will transform the industry into the future. First, engineering project networks (EPNs), in which teams collaborate on projects remotely in time and space, are transforming global construction practices. Second, as a major consumer of resources and significant producer of green-house gases, construction is under pressure to reduce its carbon footprint. Third, the construction industry presents as one of the least socially sustainable work environments, with high job dissatisfaction, skewed work–life balance and over representation of depressive and mental disorders. It is incumbent on the industry to reconcile these issues. Specifically, what scope is there to shape the evolution of EPNs towards a configuration that both promotes sustainability generally, and enhances quality of work-life issues, while at the same time continuing to apprehend the economic dividends for which it is adopted? As salient as this question is, it has not been broached in the literature. Therefore, this study aims to survey the extent to which EPNs align with the sustainability agenda, more broadly, and that of employee work-place satisfaction, more specifically. Design/methodology/approach A literature review of current knowledge of these concerns is explored and a summative assessment presented. Findings To the best of the authors’ knowledge, as the first in its kind, the study brings to light that EPNs go a long way towards facilitating economic objectives, part way towards realising ecological and sociological objectives but make hardly any impact on improving employee work satisfaction. Originality/value This paper examines an entirely novel area that has not been studied yet. Future research should take up this finding to determine how EPNs may be further adapted to accommodate these wider necessary objectives.
