Abstract The purpose of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties of particleboards made from Acacia mangium wood particles binded with three different types of seaweed-based adhesive. Red seaweed (RS), brown seaweed (BS) and green seaweed (GS) were used as the seaweed-based adhesives., while particleboard using urea formaldehyde (UF) adhesive was produced as control. Adhesives and wood particles were mixed and then undergone mat-forming, pre-pressing, hot-pressing and conditioning process. The test pieces for bending test (Modulus of Elasticity, MOE; Modulus of Rupture, MOR), and internal bonding strength (IB) were cut into size according to JIS A 5908: 2003. From mechanical properties results attained, for internal bonding strength test, all boards using RS, BS and GS adhesives were found to be significantly different at p≤0.05. Apart from that, RS adhesive showed highest MOE and MOR at 529.4259 N/mm2 and 1.7900 N/mm2, respectively. As a conclusion, the mechanical properties of particleboard using RS, BS, and GS adhesives showed RS stands out as the better adhesive among them which have significant effects on its strength.

Glubam is a kind of environmentally friendly and energy efficient composite material in civil engineering developed in recent years. But the mechanical performance after subjected aging under the outdoor conditions is a blank of research field. In this paper, a new artificial accelerated aging test method and equipment for glubam have been presented by authors. The basic material performance, including deformation changing, tensile properties, compressive properties, bending properties and internal bonding strength, are tested according to the equivalent aging duration of 120 days, 240 days, 480 days and 960 days. The failure mode of specimens shows that delamination of glubam caused by dry wet circulation is the main reason for mechanical properties degradation. All test results present monotone decreasing trend and the internal bonding strength is the most sensitive to aging duration. Aging influence factor β, internal bonding correlation coefficient η and internal correlation coefficient θ can be used to evaluate aging performance of glubam, but the accuracy of evaluation results need further research.

In this study, the effect of mat moisture content on the physical and mechanical properties of particleboard was investigated. The experimental boards were produced by using 40 % softwood, 45 % hardwood chips, and 15 % sawdust. The formaldehyde resin/adhesive was used in three-layers (bottom-top layer 12 %, core layer 8 %). Multi-opening press was used during manufacturing the experimental particleboards. The physical and mechanical properties of boards obtained were identified according to the TS-EN standards. The optimum core layer moisture content was determined as 6 % and 7 % according to the results, whereas the moisture content of bottom and top layers was 14 %. Under these moisture content conditions, the bending strength was found to be 13.3 N/mm², the modulus of elasticity in bending 2466 N/mm², and internal bonding strength 0.44 N/mm². The optimum bottom-top layer moisture content was determined to be between 13 % and 15 % and 6.5 % for the core layer.

Oriented strand board (OSB) was prepared using poplar wood with different resin content of phenol formaldehyde. It was observed that modulus of rupture and screw withdrawal of face and edge was more in oriented strand board as compare to solid wood. Internal bonding strength was very less in oriented strand board as compare to solid wood. It was also observed that most of the properties improve with increase in resin content.

This study was carried out to investigated the effect of addition ammonia which concentration is 20 percent modified urea-melamine-formaldehyde resin on the formald-ehyde emission and internal bonding strength, when hotpress temperature, time and pressure for every plywood was coincide. To determine and compare the effect of ammonia content 0, 2.5, 5 percent by weight of formaldehyde were used. To determine the level of formaldehyde emission, we used the desiccator method. The formaldehyde emissions from poplar multi-plywoods were significantly decreased with increased additions of ammonia, at a ammonia ratio of only 2.5%, the formaldehyde emission level of the un-coated samples which is seven-ply plywood can meet the F☆☆☆ grade, and also the samples with 2.5% ammonia modified resin hot-pressed showed good bonding strength.

Environmentally friendly particleboard was prepared with wheat straw, an inexpensive material. The particleboard was produced by a mixing process, using a composite adhesive comprised of urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesives and EPU. The performance of the board was evaluated by measuring internal bonding strength (IB), thickness swelling, modulus of rupture (MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE), and formaldehyde emission. The experimental results showed that maximum of dry and wet internal bonding strength, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity were 0.45MPa, 0.18MPa, 31.80MPa, and 5043MPa, respectively. The thickness swelling (TS2h) and thickness swelling (TS24h) were 3.9% and 10.7%, respectively. The composite adhesives and particleboards were measured by differential scanning calorimentry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements. The results indicated that the composite adhesive of UF/EPU could contribute to excellent mechanical, thermal, and water-resistant properties of the wheat straw particleboards.

The purpose of the study was to use a cheap wheat straw to manufacture particleboard. Wheat straws offer great promise and new challenges as replacement for wood in processed wood products. The particleboard was produced using composite adhesive which the urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesives modified by emulsifiable polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (EPU). The properties of the particleboard was evaluated by measuring internal bonding strength(IB), thickness swelling, modulus of rupture(MOR), modulus of elasticity (MOE) and formaldehyde emission. The optimal condition was chosen at density of 0.75g/cm3, UF/EPU ratio of 70/30, adhesive amounts of 10% based on the dry amounts of wheat straw. The test results showed that maximum dry internal bonding strength, wetting internal bonding strength, modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity was 0.45MPa, 0.072MPa, 31.50MPa and 4564MPa, respectively. The thickness swelling (TS2h) and thickness swelling (TS24h) was 3.51% and 11.1%, respectively. The free formaldehyde of wheat straw particleboard reached E0-type national standards.

Rhizophora spp. particleboard with the incorporation of lignin and soy flour as binders were fabricated and the influence of different percentages of lignin and soy flour (0%, 6% and 12%) on the physico-mechanical properties of the particleboard were studied. The samples were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and internal bonding. The results stipulated that the addition of binders in the fabrication of the particleboard did not change the functional groups according to the FTIR spectrum. For XRD, addition of binders did not reveal any major transformation within the composites. SEM and EDX analyses for all percentages of binders added showed no apparent disparity; however, it is important to note that the incorporation of binders allows better bonding between the molecules. In XRF analysis, lower percentage of chlorine in the adhesive-bonded samples may be advantageous in maintaining the natural properties of the particleboard. In internal bonding, increased internal bond strength in samples with binders may indicate better structural integrity and physico-mechanical strength. In conclusion, the incorporation of lignin and soy flour as binders may potentially strengthen and fortify the particleboard, thus, can be a reliable phantom in radiation dosimetry applications.

For the characteristic that the mechanical properties of resin composite are lower than cast iron, steel fibers are used to improve its properties in this paper. A weak interfacial bonding strength between steel fibers and resin indicates that steel fibers’ property cannot perform well in the polymer. In order to improve the interfacial bonding strength, four methods of surface treatment, phosphating, acid pickling, oxidation, and coupling are applied to steel fibers, and the corresponding pull-off tests are carried out to compare with untreated steel fibers. Research results show that the maximum interfacial bonding strength is increased by 45.1% after coupling treatment.
