Titanium alloys used in orthopedic surgery are usually coated with hydroxyapatite to improve their biocompatibility and osseointegration. Bioactive glasses (BGs) are an interesting alternative to hydroxyapatite for the production of prosthetic coatings due to their osteoproductive property (Class A bioactivity) and to their resorbability. However the classical techniques used to obtain prosthetic coatings are not suitable in the case of BGs. In this study bioactive glass coatings are obtained by electrophoretic deposition on a Ti12Mo5Ta alloy. These coatings were obtained from ethanol suspensions of two different bioglass powders: a Sol-Gel derived 58S and a Melting-Quenching derived 46S. Scanning electron microscopy observations were used to characterize the coatings (morphology and thickness) and the coating/substrate interfaces. The chemical composition of the coatings was studied by X-ray microanalysis and X-ray maps were performed to characterize the spatial distributions of all elements composing the coatings.

Thermal treatment of bioactive glasses can affect their microstructure and thus their bioactivity. The aim of this study was the characterization of the thermally treated sol-gel-derived bioactive glass 58S at characteristic temperatures and the dependence of its bioactive behavior on the specific thermal treatment. The thermal behavior of the bioactive glass was studied by thermal analysis (TG/DTA). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray Diffractometry (XRD) were used for the characterization of the bioactive glass. The bioactive behavior in Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) was examined by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM-EDS) and FTIR. The major crystal phases after thermal treatment were Calcium Silicates, Wollastonite and Pseudowollastonite, while all thermally treated samples developed apatite after 48 hours in SBF. A slight enhancement of bioactivity was observed for the samples heated at the temperature range 910-970oC.

Melt derived bioactive glass- porcelain system is reported to be bioactive but with a slow rate of bioactivity. The aim of this work is to fabricate and characterize bioactive glass/dental porcelain composites produced by the sol-gel method. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Diffractometry (XRD) were used to characterize the fabricated materials. The FTIR spectra and the XRD patterns confirm the presence of both constituents in the mixtures, while the dominant crystal phases in bioactive glass/dental porcelain specimens are leucite and wollastonite.

Rutile nano-powders were suspended in a solution of acetylacetone and iodine. The suspensions were electrophoretically deposited on titanium foil at a voltage range of 5-30 V over times of 5-120 s. The dried tapes then were sintered at 800°C for 2 h in flowing argon. Both the green and fired tapes were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman microspectroscopy. The thickness of the films depended on the voltage and the time of deposition. The sintered microstructures depended significantly on the thickness of the film, which was a function the proximity to the Ti/TiO2 interface. The interface is critical to the microstructure because it acts as the source of defect formation, which enhances sintering, grain growth, and grain facetting.

AbstractIn this work, sintered pellets of a silica-based bioactive glass were dip-coated with a biocompatible natural-derived polymer in order to investigate the influence of the organic coating on the glass bioactivity. After the sintering process optimization, uncoated and coated pellets have been characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM, EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and pH measurements, after the immersion in a simulated body fluid (SBF). An increased apatite forming ability and a better control of the pH during soaking of the samples in SBF were observed in the presence of the biopolymer. This result opens a new insight on the simple fabrication of highly bioactive hybrid inorganic-organic materials for medical applications.

AbstractA nanocomposite of 0.5SnO2–0.5Al2O3 has been synthesized using a sol-gel route. Structural and optical properties of the nanocomposite have been discussed in detail. Powder X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray diffraction spectroscopy confirm the phase purity and the particle size of the 0.5SnO2–0.5Al2O3 nanocomposite (13 to 15 nm). The scanning electron microscopy also confirms the porosity in the sample, useful in sensing applications. The FT-IR analysis confirms the presence of physical interaction between SnO2 and Al2O3 due to the slight shifting and broadening of characteristic bands. The UV-Vis analysis confirms the semiconducting nature because of direct transition of electrons into the 0.5SnO2–0.5Al2O3 nanocomposites.

In this paper, a novel and highly efficient hydroxyapatite (HA) carrier for cultivating hydrocarbon degradation bacteria (HDB) is introduced. The HA particles synthesized through a sol-gel method and different heat treatments were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and BET method. The microbial amount and activities of HDB cultivated on HA carriers were quantitatively investigated in order to assess their enriching capabilities. The results showed that HA synthesized at 550°C and the one without calcination could enrich HDB 3 and 2 magnitude orders more than the activated carbon, respectively. Mechanisms of bacterial enrichment on HA and activated carbon were also studied, and it is believed that the high bioactivity and the surface morphology of HA were responsible for the efficient reproduction of HDB. It is concluded that HA is a potential candidate to replace the conventionally used activated carbon as a novel carrier applied in the filed of bioremediation for oil contaminated soil.

In this study, we present the process of synthesis FexNi1-xMn2O4 (x = 0; 0.1; 0.3; 0.5; 0.7; 0.9; 1) by method sol-gel. Scanning electron microscope results shows that the particle size is about 50 nm. The X-ray diffraction diagram shows that the samples are single phase, changing structure clearly as the x ratio increases from 0 to 1. The lattice constant, the bond length also changes with x-value as shown on the Raman scattering spectrum. The results of the vibrating sample magnetometer show that the magnetism of the material FexNi1-xMn2O4 changes with the value of x and reaches a maximum in the range x from 0.5 to 0.7.

Tributyl borate was first adopted for the introduction of boron in the preparation of bioactive borosilicate xerogel by sol-gel method. The xerogel reacted continuously in 0.25M K2HPO4 solution with a starting pH value of 7.0 at 37 °C for 1day. The structural, morphologies and compositional changes resulting from the conversion were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The results indicated that speed of formation of HA was cut way back on the time with the addition of boron and the induction period for the HA nucleation on the surface of the borosilicate xerogel was short than 1 days. The conversion mechanism of the borosilicate xerogels to hydroxyapaptite was also discussed.
