Lightweight steel constructions are one of the innovative constructional systems steadily increasing in spread due to their huge benefits in respect to more traditional constructional systems. Typical lightweight steel products, usually combined with gypsum, wood and cement based panels, can be used to build both structural and nonstructural systems. After a brief description of the most common lightweight steel constructional systems, this paper describes the state of the art by focusing the attention on their behaviour under seismic actions. In particular, the main past and ongoing research themes are briefly summarised and a critical comparison among seismic codes available in North America, Europe and Oceania is presented. Finally, an overview of studies carried out on this topic at the University of Naples Federico II is presented and latest research activities involving the seismic performance assessment of both lightweight steel structural and nonstructural architectonic systems though shake-table tests is provided.

The following treatise is a summary of some of the ongoing research activities in the soil physics program at the University of California in Davis. Each of the four listed areas win be presented at the Workshop on special topics on soil physics and crop modeling in Piracicaba at the University of Sao Paulo. We limited ourselves to a general overview of each area, but will present a more thorough discussion with examples at the Workshop.

This chapter delivers results of ongoing research activities regarding workplace e-collaboration and is based on theoretical findings, analysis of software tools, as well as findings from a research project at the University of St. Gallen. The main objective of this chapter is to present theoretical foundations as well as practical implications for implementing workplace e-collaboration in organizations. After providing an overview of the state-of-the-art, background and need for action, a holistic model for e-collaboration is presented. Based upon this model, technological functionalities to be found in software tools for e-collaboration will be elaborated, described and categorized. Additionally, cultural and organizational aspects to be taken into consideration for e-collaborating team leaders and members will be defined and analyzed, both from a theoretical as well as from a practical point of view. Finally, findings from evaluating the elaborated model will be presented and the chapter concludes with a general discussion and future trends.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> FOSS4G stands for Free and Open Source Software for Geospatial. It is the flagship event of OSGeo. Each FOSS4G has its special aura, kindly designed by each Local Organising Committe, sharing the local culture and spirit with the greater community. In 2019, geo-spatial.org, the OSGeo Local Chapter of Romania, won the honour of organising the geospatial event of the year. FOSS4G 2019 was held in Bucharest (Romania), in three of the most important buildings of this city: National Theatre of Bucharest, InterContinental Hotel and Faculty of Geography from the University of Bucharest.</p><p>Following the established tradition of FOSS4G conferences, at the 2019 edition, an Academic Track ran in parallel with the General Track. The main purpose of this track was to bring together researchers, teachers, developers, users and practitioners carrying out research activities in geospatial domains, with an emphasis on the open source solutions. All types of topics such as results achieved, case studies, work in progress, academic endeavours to conceptualize, assess or teach open source geospatial software and data, were welcomed. The Academic Committee discouraged prevalent presentations of technologies or use cases without properly justifying originality to the scientific state of the art, emphasizing on particular novelty.</p><p>At this edition, 53 papers were submitted to the Academic Track. These were blind reviewed by 3 reviewers. Finally 38 scientific papers were selected for publication in this volume of the ISPRS Archives. The editors would like to thank all the authors, the members from the Scientific Committee and the Organizing Committee for their valuable contributions. We hope you enjoy reading the proceedings.</p>

Summary This article is dedicated to the regulae iuris in general, and their role in medieval jurisprudence in particular. After providing a survey of the state-of-the-art literature on regulae and discussions surrounding them, the article provides arguments in support of the thesis that the use of existing regulae and the creation of new ones were an integral part of the method of medieval jurisprudence, itself part of the general medieval dialectical method of reasoning. The article also discloses the parameters and interesting preliminary results of an ongoing research project on regulae iuris in the University of Ghent.

Nowadays, the Industry 4.0 concept affects every area of the industrial, economic, social and personal sectors. The most significant changings are the automation and the digitalization. This is also true for the material handling processes, where the handling systems use more and more automated machines; planning, operation and optimization of different logistic processes are based on many digital data collected from the material flow process. However, new methods and devices require new solutions which define new research directions. In this paper we describe the state of the art of the material handling researches and draw the role of the UMi-TWINN partner institutes in these fields. As a result of this H2020 EU project, scientific excellence of the University of Miskolc can be increased and new research activities will be started.

The WxChallenge, a project developed at the University of Oklahoma, brings a state-of-the-art, fun, and exciting forecast contest to participants at colleges and universities across North America. The challenge is to forecast the maximum and minimum temperatures, precipitation, and maximum wind speeds for select locations across the United States over a 24-h prediction period. The WxChallenge is open to all undergraduate and graduate students, as well as higher-education faculty, staff, and alumni. Through the use of World Wide Web interfaces accessible by personal computers, tablet computer, and smartphones, the WxChallenge provides a state-of-the-art portal to aid participants in submitting forecasts and alleviate many of the administrative issues (e.g., tracking and scoring) faced by local managers and professors. Since its inception in 2006, 110 universities have participated in the contest and it has been utilized as part of the curricula for 140 classroom courses at various institutions. The inherently challenging nature of the WxChallenge has encouraged its adoption as an educational tool. As its popularity has grown, professors have seen the utility of the Wx-Challenge as a teaching aid and it has become an instructional resource of many meteorological classes at institutions for higher learning. In addition to evidence of educational impacts, the competition has already begun to leave a cultural and social mark on the meteorological learning experience.

The development of autonomous ship technology is currently in focus worldwide and the literature on this topic is growing. However, an in-depth cost and benefit estimation of such endeavours is in its infancy. With this systematic literature review, we present the state-of-the-art system regarding costs and benefits of the operation of prospective autonomous merchant ships with an objective for identifying contemporary research activities concerning an estimation of operating, voyage, and capital costs in prospective, autonomous shipping and vessel platooning. Additionally, the paper outlines research gaps and the need for more detailed business models for operating autonomous ships. Results reveal that valid financial models of autonomous shipping are lacking and there is significant uncertainty affecting the cost estimates, rendering only a reliable evaluation of specific case studies. The findings of this paper may be found relevant not only by academia, but also organisations considering to undertake a challenge of implementing Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships in their operations.

Abstract Background Time out of clinical training can impact medical trainees’ skills, competence and confidence. Periods of Out of Programme for Research (OOPR) are often much longer than other approved mechanisms for time of out training. The aim of this survey study was to explore the challenges of returning to clinical training following OOPR, and determine potential solutions. Methods All current integrated academic training (IAT) doctors at the University of Leeds (United Kingdom) and previous IAT trainees undertaking OOPR in the local region (West Yorkshire, United Kingdom)(n = 53) were invited to complete a multidisciplinary survey. Results The survey was completed by 33 participants (62% response rate). The most relevant challenges identified were completing the thesis whilst transitioning back to clinical work, the rapid transition between full-time research and clinical practice, a diminished confidence in clinical abilities and isolation from colleagues. Potential solutions included dedicated funds allocated for the renewal of lapsed skills, adequate notice of the clinical rotation to which trainees return, informing clinical supervisors about the OOPR trainee returning to practice and a mandatory return to standard clinical days. Conclusions Addressing these issues has the potential to improve the trainee experience and encourage future trainees to take time out of training for research activities.

Future progress in hybrid and battery vehicles heavily relies on the optimization of involved battery components and lubricants. Attention must specifically be given to the material composition and surface coatings of the electrodes as well as the electrolyte used to maximize energy output, while also ensuring safety. Additionally, prioritizing the effective utilization of specific lubricants for electric motors and various tribological contacts, such as wheel bearings and the steering system, is the prospective goal of lubrication research. The energy output of the most promising battery, the Li-ion battery (LIB), must result in driving ranges, which can compete with the 600 km driving range of combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. Consequently, ongoing research activities in cell chemistry, electrode surface engineering, electrolyte engineering, and engine lubrication offer the greatest opportunity in achieving these goals.

Integration of science, higher education, innovative entrepreneurship contributes to the solution of topical problems caused by global challenges. The article shows that universities integrate scientific, educational, innovative activities both within their structural units and in cooperation with other participants in regional innovative systems. The aim is to identify the trends in multichannel funding of universities in the regions, which creates the conditions for the integration of educational and research activities, and summarize the experience of universities that have created strategic academic units (SAUs) as one of the forms of integrating science and higher education. Based on the statistical analysis of financial receipts to universities from various sources in 2015 and 2019 (form VPO_2), the trends and structure of the funding distribution by type of educational and research activities in the regions of the Russian Federation were compared. It has been revealed that educational activities dominate in universities, accounting for about 70% of all income, and research activities 12–13%. Regional cases of the universities (ITMO, NNU, TSU, NSU, SFU) were analyzed. They integrated science and education in the form of SAUs. The cases were prepared on the basis of a content analysis of roadmaps for the period 2016–2020, interviews, and other open information. The analysis has showed that the organizational model of each SAU is created on the basis of the uniqueness and competitiveness of the university’s scientific and educational specialization by mechanisms that ensure the integration of the educational process and research activities through the involvement of students, graduate students in research and innovative projects. It is concluded that the flexibility and versatility of training programs and research at the university in the SAU format is formed in cooperation with many participants in regional innovation systems, which leads to the demand for its services by enterprises in the regions of the European part of the country and Siberia. The synergy of educational, research and innovation activities is achieved within the framework of both one university and through its network interaction with other Russian and international universities, scientific organizations, and enterprises. The experience of creating SAUs can be used by regional administrations, corporations in the development of world-class scientific and educational centers within the framework of the Science national project and national research and flagship universities of the strategic academic leadership program.
