The article presents the results of a study of the effect of milled and chopped carbon fibers, with an average particle length of 0.2 and , respectively, on the mechanical properties of polyphenylene sulfide and its heat resistance. It was found that the introduction of carbon fibers leads to a significant decrease in the melt flow rate. It was shown that after a sharp decrease in impact strength at 10 % content of carbon fibers, its inverse improvement occurs with an increase in the filler content. Composites containing carbon fibers with length demonstrate higher impact strength. The introduction of a filler leads to a significant increase in the elastic modulus and strength of polyphenylene sulfide and its heat resistance.

The paper studies new high-temperature thermoplastic impregnated unidirectional carbon fiber composites. The research focuses on the effect of thermal and chemical oxidation of the carbon fibers surface on the interfacial interaction between fibers and polysulfone and polyphenylene sulfide as well as thermal and mechanical properties of the composites. The research reveals the interaction between carbon fibers and the polymer matrix depend both on the type of surface treatment and nature of the polymer. The chemical oxidation of carbon fibers results in good interfacial interaction, and the best mechanical properties were observed for tows impregnated with polyphenylene sulfide.

In this article, a kind of SMC artificial marble was prepared. In order to enhance the mechanical properties and prolong the using life of SMC artificial marble, some effects such as fiber content, filler content and molding temperature etc. on the mechanical properties were carefully studied, too. Results showed that the increase of fiber content could improve the impact strength of SMC artificial marble when the fiber length was 10mm and the increase of filler content would decrease the flexural strength of SMC artificial marble. And the molding temperature at the range of 130°C ~ 160°C had little influence on the mechanical properties of SMC artificial marble. Comparing with natural marble and casting marble, SMC artificial marble owed superior overall performance and it was much more suitable for industry production.

AbstractIn this study, mechanical properties and microstructures of extruded aluminum matrix composites were investigated. The composite materials were manufactured by two step methods: powder metallurgy (mixture of aluminum powder and carbon fiber using a turbular mixer, pressing of mixed aluminum powder and carbon fiber using a cold isostatic pressing) and hot extrusion of pressed aluminum powder and carbon fiber. For the mixing of Al powder and carbon fibers, aluminum powder was used as a powder with an average particle size of 30 micrometer and the addition of the carbon fibers was 50% of volume. In order to make mixing easier, it was mixed under an optimal condition of turbular mixer with a rotational speed of 60 rpm and time of 1800s. The process of the hot-extrusion was heated at 450°C for 1 hour. Then, it was hot-extruded with a condition of extrusion ratio of 19 and ram speed of 2 mm/s. The microstructural analysis of extruded aluminum matrix composites bars and semi-solid casted alloys were carried out with the optical microscope, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. Its mechanical properties were evaluated by Vickers hardness and tensile test.

The carbon fiber (CF) reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) composite was modified by aminated polyphenylene sulfide (PPS-NH2) with different mass fractions. The quantified influence of aminated PPS on PPS/CF composites was investigated. The PPS/CF composite with 7wt% PPS-NH2 showed the best mechanical properties. The tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus and impact strength of the composites increased by 12.5%, 13.0%, 38.5% and 31.5%, respectively. PPS-NH2 hardly influenced the melting process of PPS/CF composite. But the crystallization temperature (Tc) of PPS were obviously increased with the present of aminated PPS.

In this work, effects of the oxygen plasma on surface characteristics of carbon fibers were investigated in impact strengths of the carbon fibers-reinforced composites. The surface properties of the carbon fibers were determined by acid-base values, FT-IR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Also, the mechanical properties of the composites were studied in impact strength measurements. As experimental results, the O1S/C1S ratio of the carbon fiber surfaces treated by oxygen plasma was increased compared to that of untreated ones, possibly due to development of oxygen-containing functional groups. The mechanical properties of the composites, including impact strength had been improved in the oxygen plasma on fibers. These results indicate that the oxygen plasma can lead to an increase in the adhesion between fibers and matrix in a composite system.

This study uses carbon fibers (CF) to reinforce polylactic acid (PLA) matrices to form CF/PLA biocomposites. Tensile test, flexural test, and impact test are performed on biocomposites to evaluate their mechanical properties. The results of tests show that an increment of the CF content results in an increase in tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and impact strength. The combination of 15 wt% CF provides the resulting biocomposites with a 72 % increase in tensile strength, a 322 % increase in flexural modulus, and a 96 % increase in impact strength.

This research deals with the mechanical properties, microstructure, and interrelations of triple nanocomposite based on PET/EPDM/Nanoclay. These properties were examined in different percentages of PET/EPDM blend with compatibilizer (Styrene-Ethylene/Butylene-Styrene)-G-(Maleic anhydrate) (SEBS-g-MAH). Results showed that the addition of 15% SEBS-g-MAH improved the toughness and impact strength of this nanocomposite. SEM micrographs indicated the most stable fuzzy microstructure in a 50/50 mixture of scattered phases of EPDM/SEBS-g-MAH. The effects of percentages of 1, 3, 5, 7 nanoclay Cloisite 30B (C30B) on the improvement of the properties were evaluated. With the addition of nano clay, the toughness and impact strength was reduced. Thermal destruction of nanoclay in processing temperature led to the decreasing dispersion of clay plates in the matrix and a reduction in the distances of nano clay plates in the composite compared to pure nano clay. XRD and TEM analysis was used to demonstrate the results. By adding 1% of nanoclay to the optimal sample, maximum stiffness, and Impact strength, among other nanocomposites, was achieved.
