Novelis Inc. recently released its first new innovative technology which opens new opportunities in the clad aluminum product marketplace, where a combination of mechanical and physical properties can be obtained which are superior to the monolithic material alone. Clad aerospace and brazing products are well known commercial products which are provided by commercial roll bonding processes, but which can now be produced with the new Novelis technology. This paper discusses the new technology, e.g., the casting, fabrication, the properties of clad sheet are reported and it is established that the clad-core interface is comprised of a high strength, oxide free zone. This technology enables a new family of clad products with clad/core combinations which cannot be produced by the conventional roll bonding process.

Hot tearing and cold cracks are major defects during direct chill (DC) casting of large sized ingots of high strength aluminium alloys. In order to solve these problems, based on a low frequency electromagnetic casting (LFEC) process, a new technology, electromagnetic casting with the application of an air blade (EMA) was developed. In the present work, this new technology was used to prepare large sized AA7055 aluminium alloy ingots and the effects of the low frequency electromagnetic field and the air blade on macro-physical fields, microstructure and cracking are studied by numerical and experimental methods. The results show that applying an electromagnetic field can modify the flow direction, increase the velocity of melt flow and homogenize the distribution of temperature in the sump. Applying an air blade can homogenize the distribution of temperature and decrease the stress and strain in the solidified ingot. Furthermore, the microstructure of the ingot is refined remarkably and cracking is eliminated by simultaneously applying the electromagnetic field and the air blade during DC casting.

Aluminum is the richest metallic element in the earth, the ingots cast by DC casting process are usually extruded into aluminum bars. When the final products do not require high strength, this process appears to be low efficiency and high cost. We try to design a new technology to cast aluminum bar by horizontal direct chill (HDC) casting process directly. An electromagnetic field is applied during the horizontal continuous casting of 6061 aluminium bar with a diameter of 30mm. The experimental results show the asymmetry of the sump can be overcome by electromagnetic field. Ingot with good upper and lower surface quality is obtained. The structure of ingot is refined and the angle between growth direction and horizontal direction becomes small with increasing casting speed.

Advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) steels are relatively not very well weldable because of the dominant martensitic structure with coarse ferrite and bainite. The utmost difficulty in welding these steels is their tendency to crack both in the heat affected zone (HAZ) and in weld. The significant disadvantage is that the strength of the welded joint is much lower in comparison to base material. Adopting the new technology regarding micro-jet cooling (MJC) after welding with micro-jet cooling could be the way to steer the microstructure of weld metal deposit. Welding with micro-jet cooling might be treated as a very promising welding S700MC steel process. Tensile and fatigue tests were mainly carried out as the main destructive experiments for examining the weld. Also bending probes, metallographic structure analysis, and some non-destructive measurements were performed. The welds were created using innovative technology by MAG welding with micro-jet cooling. The paper aims to verify the fatigue and tensile properties of the thin-walled S700MC steel structure after welding with various parameters of micro-cooling. For the first time, micro-jet cooling was used to weld S700MC steel in order to check the proper mechanical properties of the joint. The main results are processed in the form of the Wöhler’s S–N curves (alternating stress versus number cycles to failure).

There is a widespread interest in understanding the properties of Al-base alloys so that progress can be made toward extending their present applications in the aircraft industry. Al-Zn-Mg is precipitation hardened to gain its high strength; however, during aging the formation of heterogeneous precipitates on the grain boundaries creates a precipitate-free zone in the adjacent region. Since high angle grain boundaries are not easily characterized, it is difficult to establish a relationship between the precipitate and the boundary structure. Therefore, this study involves precipitation on low angle grain boundaries where the boundary and the precipitate can be fully analyzed.

The swiftly growing urban population of Nigeria is generating lots of tension in the cities in line with the rapid increase of vehicles. This is due to hitherto reliance on the present parking system which has no standard to check for parking spaces, hence generating problems such as traffic congestion, time wastage in search of parking slot, fuel consumption/CO emission, insecurity of vehicles etc. This work presents a quantitative statistical survey analysis conducted in selected metropolitan cities in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The aim is to create awareness on Smart Car Parking System (SCPS) for heterogeneous clustered environments. The results of the conducted analysis showed that the awareness of this innovative technology is still at its tender stage in Nigeria. Findings shows that people are willing to adopt this new technology to assist in overcoming the challenges faced in the present parking system that is unstructured. A brief description of proposed SCPS based on Big data hardware is presented.

Accumulative roll-bonding (ARB) process is one of the severe plastic deformation processes for fabricating ultrafine grained materials that exhibit high strength. In aluminum alloys, aging heat treatment has been an important process for hardening materials. In order to achieve good mechanical properties through the combination of grain refinement hardening and precipitation hardening, an Al-4.2wt%Ag binary alloy was used in the present study. After a solution treatment at 550°C for 1.5hr, the alloy was severely deformed by the ARB process at room temperature (RT) up to 6 cycles (equivalent strain of 4.8). The specimens ARB-processed by various cycles (various strains) were subsequently aged at 100, 150, 200, 250°C, and RT. The hardness of the solution treated (ST) specimen increased by aging. On the other hand, hardness of the ARB processed specimen decreased after aging at high temperatures such as 250°C. This was probably due to coarsening of precipitates or/and matrix grains. The specimen aged at lower temperature showed higher hardness. The maximum harnesses achieved by aging for the ST specimen, the specimens ARB processed by 2 cycles, 4 cycles and 6 cycles were 55HV, 71HV, 69HV and 65HV, respectively. By tensile tests it was shown that the strength increased by the ARB process though the elongation decreased significantly. However, it was found that the tensile elongation of the ARB processed specimens was improved by aging without sacrificing the strength. The results suggest that the Al-Ag alloy having large elongation as well as high strength can be realized by the combination of the ARB process for grain refinement and the subsequent aging for precipitation hardening.

Designing a new family of advanced high-strength steels (AHSSs) to develop automotive parts that cover early industry needs is the aim of many investigations. One of the candidates in the 3rd family of AHSS are the quenching and partitioning (QP) steels. These steels display an excellent relationship between strength and formability, making them able to fulfill the requirements of safety, while reducing automobile weight to enhance the performance during service. The main attribute of QP steels is the TRIP effect that retained austenite possesses, which allows a significant energy absorption during deformation. The present study is focused on evaluating some process parameters, especially the partitioning temperature, in the microstructures and mechanical properties attained during a QP process. An experimental steel (0.2C-3.5Mn-1.5Si (wt%)) was selected and heated according to the theoretical optimum quenching temperature. For this purpose, heat treatments in a quenching dilatometry and further microstructural and mechanical characterization were carried out by SEM, XRD, EBSD, and hardness and tensile tests, respectively. The samples showed a significant increment in the retained austenite at an increasing partitioning temperature, but with strong penalization on the final ductility due to the large amount of fresh martensite obtained as well.

Bolted joint railroad is the subject matter of this paper. Rail joint elements are subjected to cyclic and impact loads as a result of the passage of trains, which causes the origination and growth of fatigue cracks occurring, in most cases, around the bolt holes. Fatigue failure around rail-end-bolt holes is particularly dangerous because it leads to derailment of trains and, consequently, to inevitable accidents. Moreover, the cracking at rail-ends, which starts from bolt hole surface, causes premature rails replacement. The presence of residual compressive hoop stresses around the bolted holes, which is achieved by prestressing of these holes, extends the fatigue life of bolted joint railroads. This article presents an innovative technology for pre-stressing of rail-end-bolt holes, implemented on a vertical machining centre of Revolver vertical (RV) type. Two consecutive operations are involved in the manufacturing technology process: formation of the hole by drilling, reaming and making of a chamfer through a new combined cutting tool; cold hole working by spherical motion cold working through a new tool equipment, which minimizes the axial force on the reverse stroke. The new technology introduces beneficial residual compressive stresses around the bolted holes thereby preventing the fatigue cracks growth and increasing the fatigue life of these openings.

AZ31 Mg / 5083 Al clad sheet was fabricated by the hot rolling method and its mechanical properties were investigated in this study. The tensile strength and yield strength of Mg- Al clad samples were slightly higher than that of AZ31 Mg sample, resulting in high strength 5083 Al alloy. Also, in the case of the AZ31 Mg sample, tensile strength indicated different values to the rolling directions. The thickness of interface layers between magnesium and aluminum materials increased with increasing rolling temperature. The thickness of interface layer was about 1.2 μm and 1.6 μm, respectively. The difference of thickness on the interface layer with variation of rolling temperature was attributed to promote the diffusion between magnesium and aluminum materials. The Vickers hardness of Mg-Al interface layer was around 125 Hv. The interface layer composed of hard inter-metallic phases which may act a increment of Vickers hardness depending upon its thickness.

This study investigates the self-curing concrete using baby polymer diapers as substitute method of curing process in order to improve mechanical and physical properties of concrete. Three different proportion of baby polymer diapers which are 1%, 3% and 5% were mix with concrete. Slump, compressive strength and drying shrinkage test were performed in order to study the workability, strength and durability of the concrete. All concrete were tested for 1, 3, 7, 14, and 28 days for drying shrinkage test. Meanwhile, all concrete were test at 3, 7 and 28 days for compressive strength test. Compressive strength of concrete containing 5% baby polymer diapers show the highest strength at 28 days compared to others percentage. Thus, it indicates that application of baby polymer diaper as self-cure agent can improve the concrete performances.
