The Thixoforming of metals is a new forming technology, which combines the advantages of casting and forging. This technology focuses on structural components with complex shapes, which can not be manufactured using conventional processing methods. Different components made of aluminum and magnesium are already industrially produced. Apart from this, the use of steels in the Thixoforming processes is still being researched and developed. During the last years it became obvious that the Thixoforming of steels may not be a complete substitution for highly automated die-casting or forging processes, but rather a new process route to produce special components with high quality and geometrical demands. Special interest lies in the development and production of filigree components, parts with voids or undercuts, integrated elements such as tubes or tube-systems and joining pieces or products made of different materials. Beside the design of suitable tool materials and tool concepts, the development of homogeneous heating strategies and the development of thixoformable steels is at the center of current research. Therefore, this paper focuses on material requirements which are needed for the Thixoforming of steels and on the production of components and occurring problems. By use of a failure catalogue for Thixoforming of steels, reasons for characteristic failures and suggestions are given to avoid them, so that the quality of thixoformed parts can be improved.

This paper analyzes the casting process characteristics of Mg alloys compared with Al alloys in the production of high quality (i.e. structural) structural vehicle components. The disadvantages of traditional squeeze casting for high quality Mg components has led the authors to develop a novel squeeze casting process which overcomes the drawbacks of the current methods. The details of the new process are presented here and show the increased productivity and quality of castings that can result from changing the way molten metal is handled and processed. The feasibility of this new squeeze casting process was applied to Mg wheels for LX150 motorbikes.

To remove the disadvantage of conventional stretch forming machine (CSFM), a flexible stretch forming machine (FSFM) has been developed by authors recently. Based on finite element simulation and experiments, the advantages of FSFM have been detailed discussed. Our results indicated that the discrete multi-gripping jaws can swing and rotate in any direction automatically, which can solve the wasteful production of CSFM by increase the rate of materials utilization and close-fitting dies. Furthermore, the value of springback and thickness gradient in the parts formed by discrete multi-gripping jaws is smaller compare with that of integrally gripping jaws, which can help to achieve a high quality of stretch forming parts. A series of double-curved sheet panels have been formed by FSFM easily and used in the cabinet covers of high-speed train and the Dongdaemun Design Park building successfully. This work has a strong value in enhance the way to flexible and reproducible stretch forming technology.

ABSTRACTFeasibility of 4H-SiC epitaxy on SiCOI substrates has been demonstrated, with high quality of obtained layers. Power Schottky diodes were designed and fabricated on these new structures, and exhibited very interesting electrical performance, particularly in reverse mode, with Vbr ∼ 1000 V. This technology is very promising for the realization of monolithic SiC power systems.

At present, we cannot imagine a modern production process without computer support. At the same time, its integral part is the implementation of advanced and highly sophisticated production processes and technologies. Their aim is first and foremost to ensure quality production of products with high economic efficiency of the production process. EDM technology is one of the currently active progressive technologies. This is a technology that in practice is characterized by high product quality. The high quality of products not only through this progressive technology, but also other, whether conventional or progressive, is difficult to achieve without computer support. The aim of the paper is therefore to demonstrate the process of manufacturing a die-casting mould using progressive EDM technology using computer support.

Free-cutting steel gains specific working properties thanks to the high content of sulfur and phosphorus. These elements, especially sulfur, have a rather high tendency to segregation. Therefore, segregation defects in free-cutting steel continuously cast billets can be significantly developed. The aim of the work was to study the influence of the chemical composition of freecutting steel and casting technological parameters on the quality of the macrostructure of continuously cast billets. A metallographic assessment of the internal structure of cast metal made of free-cutting steel and data processing by application of correlation and regression analysis were the research methods. The array of production data of 43 heats of free-cutting steel of grade A12 was studied. Steel casting on a five-strand radial type continuous casting machine was carried out by various methods of metal pouring from tundish into the molds. Metal of 19 heats was poured with an open stream, and 24 heats – by a closed stream through submerged nozzles with a vertical hole. High-quality billets had a cross-sectional size of 150×150 mm. The macrostructure of high-quality square billets made of free-cutting steel of A12 grade is characterized by the presence of central porosity, axial segregation and peripheral point contamination, the degree of development of which was in the range from 1.5 to 2.0 points, segregation cracks and strips – about 1.0 points. In the course of casting with an open stream, almost all of these defects are more developed comparing with the casting by a closed stream. As a result of correlation and regression analysis, linear dependences of the development degree of segregation cracks and strips both axial and angular on the sulfur content in steel and on the ratio of manganese content to sulfur content were established. The degree of these defects development increases with growing of sulfur content in steel of A12 grade. These defects had especially strong development when sulfur content in steel was of more than 0.10%. To improve the quality of cast metal, it is necessary to have the ratio of the manganese content to the sulfur content in the metal more than eight.

The experience of clinical testing of the personal telemedicine system ‘Obereg’ for remote monitoring of patients at the intensive care units of leading Russian clinics is described. The high quality of communication with the remote receiving devices of doctors, the accuracy of measurements, resistance to interference from various hospital equipment and the absence of its own impact on such equipment were confirmed. There are significant advantages compared to stationary patient monitors, in particular, for intra and out-of-hospital transportation of patients.

The transthoracic echocardiography made by multifrequency probes with support of the mode of the second harmonic imaging, is a competitive method for visualization of the main coronary arteries and allows to estimate coronary blood flow with high quality. Of course, the method has considerable restrictions, most important of which is the low spatial resolution of a method, due to small acoustic window. Because of this the transthoracic visualization of coronary arteries perhaps will not become the leading method of anatomic reconstruction of separately taken coronary artery and especially all coronary arteries system. However uniqueness and indisputable advantage of this method is an opportunity to noninvasively estimate a coronary blood flow both once, and in dynamics.
