The aim of this work was the study of the heat treatment optimisation of high chrome steels used for the manufacture of rolling rolls in order to obtain a final product with a high hardness and wear resistance and taking into account the very large dimensions typical of these products. The effect of modifying the maintenance temperature and time during the different phases of the heat treatment on the microstructure and hardness of this product was evaluated. The necessity of adjusting the temperature and maintenance time of the quenching heat treatment in order to obtain a martensitic/bainitic matrix with a low austenite content followed by two tempering treatments was demonstrated as the best way to obtain the optimal properties of the product for this particular application.

When the ductile iron which is also known as Spheroidal Graphite (SG) iron, is subjected to austempering heat treatment, the material is known as austempered ductile iron (ADI). This material has good mechanical properties and has various applications in different fields. This revolutionary material with its excellent combination of strength, ductility, toughness and wear resistance has the potential to replace some of the commonly used conventional materials such as steel, aluminium and other light weight alloys as it offers production advantage as well. One of the problems encountered during manufacturing is machining of ADI parts owing to its high hardness and wear resistance. Many researchers over a period of time have reported the machinability aspects of the ADI. This paper presents a review on the developments made on the machinability aspects of ADI along with other mechanical properties.

The effect of destabilization heat treatment on the microstructure, hardness, fracture toughness and abrasive wear resistance of high chromium hardfacing was investigated. The results from the study shows that the hardness, frac­ture toughness and abrasive wear resistance are influenced by temperature of destabilization heat treatment and air and furnace cooling conditions, respectively. Destabilization treatment of materials by furnace cooling caused higher secondary carbides in the dendritic austenite whilst by air cooling it showed smaller particles of secondary carbide. Also, it was found that destabilization temperature at 1,000°C improves hardness compared with hardfacing after weld depositing. The study, however, indicated that Palmqvist fracture toughness method is a useful technique for measuring the fracture toughness of high chromium hardfacing compared to Vicker’s hardness method.

A novel high C high Si carbide free bainitic steel was developed for the production of cold work tools, knives, and rolls, requiring high hardness, toughness, as well as abrasive/adhesive wear resistance and resistance to galling at low costs. The steel was tribologically tested in dry sliding conditions under abrasive and adhesive wear mode, facilitated by using alumina and bearing steel ball as a counter-material, respectively. It was determined that carbide dissolution occurs under high contact pressures, thereby enriching the surrounding matrix with carbon and locally increasing the retained austenite content. The high retained austenite at the sliding interface increases the steels work hardening capacity and promotes superior wear resistance when compared to much more alloyed cold work tool steel, such as AISI D2. The steel has a high resistance to galling as determined by sliding against a soft steel bar due to its chemical composition.

The proposed paper deals about the heat treatment of two types of chromium tool steels that are assigned to work in specific conditions of abrasion wear. The materials are heat treated to achieve high hardness for higher abrasion wear resistance. An additional increase of the materials abrasion wear resistance can be achieved by applying nitridation with diffusion annealing of the material surface. The paper deals about the influence of the material purity, his chemical composition on the process of diffusion, the quality of the nitrided layer of a vacuum smelted steel Bӧhler W400 VMR and a chromium steel X210Cr12.
