Hybrid organic-inorganic nanocomposites can be prepared by the sol-gel process. An attribute of the sol-gel process is that organic and inorganic components can be linked together on the nanoscale through chemical reactions at room temperature. Functionalized siloxanes can be mixed and reacted to form nanocomposites with a wide range of mechanical, optical and dielectric properties.

CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) powder was prepared by sol-gel process using acetic acid as a solvent and also as cross-linking agent by varying the sintering temperature (1000-1150 ºC) for 3 h. The dried gels were characterized by TG-DTA and FT-IR techniques. The sintered samples were characterized by XRD, SEM techniques and impedance analyzer for dielectric properties measurement. The sample showed the perovskite structure with small amounts of TiO2 and CuO phases. The best dielectric properties (εr = 1.38 × 104 and tan δ = 0.13 at 10 kHz and room temperature) were observed in the CCTO pellets calcined at 800 ºC for 3 h and sintered at 1100 ºC for 3 h.

Thin films nanoparticles TbxY3-xFe5O12 (x=0.0, 1.0, 2.0) were prepared by the sol-gel process followed by annealing process at various annealing temperatures of 700° C, 800° C and 900° C in air for 2 h. The results obtained from X-ray diffractometer (XRD) show that the films annealed below 900°C exhibit peaks of garnet mixed with small amounts of YFeO3 and Fe2O3. Pure garnet phase has been detected in the films annealed at 900°C. Before annealing the films show amorphous structures. The particles sizes measurement using the field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) showed that the particles sizes increased as the annealing temperature increased. The magnetic properties were measured at room temperature using the vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The saturation magnetization (Ms) of the films also increased with the annealing temperature. However, different behavior of coercivity (Hc) has been observed as the annealing temperature was increased.

AbstractPhotosensitive organic-inorganic hybrid polymers were synthesised for integrated optical and optoelectronic devices by a non-hydrous sol-gel process of hydrolysis/condensation of 3-methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS), diphenyldimethoxysilane (DPhDMS), and zirconium isopropoxide (TPZ) with boric acid under anhydrous conditions. The methacryl groups of MPS are UVpolymerizable, which are suitable for low cost fabrication of waveguides with a “UV write/develop” process. The incorporation of DPhDMS and TPZ was found useful in reducing the optical loss and in enhancing the thermostability of the polymer. The refractive index of the hybrid polymer is tuneable from 1.4950 to 1.5360 by variation of the ratio among MPS, DPhDMS and TPZ. Optical characterisation showed that the material has low optical losses at the telecommunications windows (0.16 dB/cm at 1310 nm and 0.4 dB/cm at 1550nm). The hybrid polymer also showed a low birefringence (1.2×10-4), a large thermo-optic (TO) coefficient (-2.77 ×10-4), and an outstanding linearity of dn/dT in a wide range of temperature (from 25 °C to 200 °C). Waveguides forming ability for the hybrid polymer with UV imprinting was also demonstrated.

The rapid detection of asphalt content in asphalt mixture is of great significance to the quality evaluation of asphalt pavement. Based on the dielectric properties of an asphalt mixture, the prediction model of asphalt content is deduced theoretically using three types of dielectric models: Lichtenecker-Rother (L-R) model, Rayleigh model, and Bottcher equation. Under the condition of laboratory mixing at room temperature (about 20–25°C), a dielectric test of asphalt mixture is conducted to verify the applicability of the model. The test results indicate that the dielectric constant of the asphalt mixture is inversely proportional to the asphalt content and directly proportional to the aggregate size of the mixture. Among the models, the Rayleigh model has a wide range of applications and exhibits a high accuracy, with an average relative error of only 1.86%. The results provide a theoretical basis for the nondestructive testing of asphalt pavements using ground-penetrating radar.

The purpose of this work was hydrogen permeation of ceramic or metal/ceramic membrane using γ-Al2O3 by synthesizing. The γ-Al2O3 was synthesized by using the sol-gel process with aluminum isopropoxide and primary distilled water as the precursor and solvent. The γ-Al2O3-based membranes were prepared using HPS. The phase transformation, thermal evolution, surface are and morphology of γ-Al2O3 and γ-Al2O3-based membranes were characterized by XRD, TG-DTA, BET and FE-SEM. The hydrogen permeation of γ-Al2O3-based membranes was examined at room temperature comparing with other paper using nickel composited membrane on alumina ceramic support.
