Effect of Poly(Acrylic Acid) Based Polymer Flocculants on Sedimentation of Surface Water

In most scenarios, there tend to have some impurities such as organic and inorganic substances found on the surface water. These impurities can be classified as insoluble and soluble compounds which in turn, can be purified by filtration and sedimentation prior used. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3), is one of the most contaminated compounds on surface water, mainly causes severe damage to industrial parts. Therefore, CaCO3 need immediate removal from raw water before applied to an unit operation by coagulation and flocculation. We mainly focused on precipitation of synthetic water and raw water with polyaluminium chloride (PAC) and synthetic polymer flocculants in this research study. The synthetic flocculants of Polyacrylic acid (PAA), Polyacrylamide (PAM) and Poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) (PAAAM) by free radical polymerization in aqueous. The PAAAM is synthesized in various mole ratio of acrylic acid and acrylamide of 9:1 to 5:5. The polymer flocculants are characterized by FT-IR and 1H-NMR techniques. The FTIR spectra of the sample showed absorption frequency above HYPERLINK "tel:3200-3000" \t "_blank" 3200-3000, 1750-1550 and 1650-1500 corresponding to OH and CO stretching and NH bending respectively. The 1H-NMR spectra of PAM showed chemical shift at 1.50, 2.10 and 4.20 ppm regarding to proton of methyl, methylene and amide group respectively and the present of proton resonances at 1.50 and 2.30 ppm regarding to proton of methyl and methylene of PAA. The removal efficiency of suspended CaCO3 is measured and calculated via turbidity technique. The dosage of PAC 0.1 ppm can remove suspended CaCO3 approximately 65.33% after the PAAAM with mole ratio of 8:2 is applied to system lead to the removal efficiency increasing to 99.03%.

Carboxylated polymer can be used as an anti-scaling agent in circulating water cooling systems. Poly(acrylic acid) and homopolymer have some drawbacks such as slight solubility in water and low calcium tolerance leading difficulty to determine the remaining quantity of polymer in water. This research is mainly focused on synthesis and ability of poly(acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid) (PAA-PAMPS) for scale inhibition. These terpolymers varied in mole ratios of monomers were prepared via solution polymerization. The obtained polymers are then characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, TGA, turbidity, and UV-visible spectroscopy. For a scale inhibition test, GB/T 16632-2008 standard is applied. The scale inhibition efficiency for 100% was found in PAA-PAMPS copolymer (7:3). Afterwards this polymer was chosen for synthesizing an ultraviolet-tagged PAA-PAMPS-PNaSS terpolymer. UV-visible spectroscopy was used to monitor benzene sulfonate structure in sodium styrene sulfonate of the polymer chain at 224 nm.

We report on preparation of poly(acrylic acid-co-methyl methacrylate) (PAM) micro- and nanoparticles and, in the subsequent stage, complexation reaction with the active substance - metronidazole (MET). The drug release behavior of MET - loaded PAM micro- and nanoparticles was evaluated in water and phosphate buffered saline (PBS, 0.9% NaCl) at 37ºC. It has been found that introduction of MET into PAM micro- and nanoparticles enabled gradual and controlled release of the active substance. Structural analysis using FT-IR (ATR) and (1)H NMR, as well as surface morphology assessment by SEM, were performed.

Nationwide surveys of 1,4-dioxane and methyl-t-butyl ether (MTBE) levels in raw water used for the drinking water supply were conducted at 91 water treatment plants in Japan in 2001 and 2002, prior to the revision of the drinking water quality standards. 1,4-dioxane was widely and continuously detected in raw water samples and its occurrence was more frequent and its concentrations higher in groundwater than in surface water. However, its maximum concentration in raw water was much lower than its new standard value (50 μg/L), which was determined as a level of 10−5 excessive cancer risk to humans. Trace levels of MTBE were also detected in several surface water samples.

In the reaction of dianions with poly(methyl methacrylate), only an insignificant amount of insoluble crosslinked product is obtained. If, however, the concentration of grafting dianions approaches that of ester groups, the amount of poly(methyl methacrylate) which may thus be crosslinked becomes quite significant. Dications, too, can bring about crosslinking of only an insignificant number of poly(methyl methacrylate) chains. Carboxylic groups in poly(acrylic acid) react with dianions and dications in an anhydrous medium similarly to ester groups. On the other hand, in the presence of a cocatalytic amount of water dications are more readily bound to carboxylic groups, forming a covalent bond. The relatively highest efficiency was observed in the bond formation between dication and the poly[styrene-alt-(maleic anhydride)], both in an anhydrous medium and in the presence of H2O.

The conformation of [Sar1]angiotensin II in water at neutral pH has been examined by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy at 400 MHz and in particular by comparing its 1H NMR spectral data with those of analogues modified at positions 1,4 and 6, namely [Sar1,Cha8]ANGII, [Des Asp1,Cha8]ANGII, [Aib1,Tyr(Me)4]ANGII, [Aib1,Tyr(Me)4,Ile8]ANGII, [N-MeAib1,Tyr(Me)4]ANGII, [N-MeAib1,Tyr(Me)4,Ile8]ANGII, ANGIII and [Sar1,Ile8]ANGII. Assignment of all proton resonances in these analogues was made possible by 2D COSY NMR experiments. The H-2 and H-4 protons for the histidine ring in [Sar1]ANGII, ANGII and ANGIII were shielded compared with the same protons in [Sar1,Ile8]ANGII, [Sar1,Cha8]ANGII and [Des Asp1,Cha8]ANGII; this shielding effect was not disturbed upon methylation of the tyrosine hydroxyl and/or replacement of residue 1 (sarcosine or aspartic acid) with aminoisobutyric acid (Aib) or N-methyl aminoisobutyric acid (N-MeAib). These data are consistent with our previous suggestion based on NMR studies in neutral DMSO that a characteristic folded conformation for ANGII previously observed in non-polar solvents can also be detected in water at neutral pH, but to a lesser degree.
