Background: The leadership role in nursing reflects the complexity and rapid transformations which take place in healthcare. The influences of this catalyst of change are important for nurses’ identity and professional development, as well as for evolving and innovating nursing practices. Objective: This study is part of a larger research project on doctoral Leadership in Nursing, aims to identify nurses’ perceptions regarding their similarities and differences compared to nurses in manager roles, in order to understand and recognise the influences and barriers to leadership in the nursing hierarchy. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study of a qualitative nature, involved the participation of 19 registered nurses (RNs), based on the Zavalloni Ego-Ecological Theory. Results: From the dimension of identification emerged two major themes - the vision of the profession and the competency skills required. The major theme of competency skills includes subthemes of relational, technical/scientific, leadership and management competencies. From the dimension of differentiation emerged two major themes - the vision of the profession and the competency skills. The major theme competency skills included two subthemes - the deficit of relational and management competency skills. Conclusions: Nurse-managers may choose to distance or influence nurses; influence can be achieved through not only a combination of leadership and management competencies but also on the nurse-managers’ evidence-based expertise and relational skills alongside a vision to support team unity in order to create a positive environment which encourages the nurses to be involved in high quality and innovative practices.Implications for nursing management: This study may help to understand the approaches undertaken by leaders in nursing and subsequently enhance their performance. It may also inform future leadership training for nurses.

ABSTRACT The research carried out intended to analyze the panorama of patents related to welfare in cattle. To this end, a search was carried out on the worldwide Questel Orbit patent registration database oriented toward the existence of terms associated with welfare in cattle in the documents of patent families. The investigation corresponded to the period from the beginning of the registrations in 1967 until August 2019. In this way, an initial portfolio was created of 272 registrations. Of these, 77 documents were related to cattle, with direct or indirect interventions in the optimization of the welfare. Data analysis took place in a quantitative way and through the classification of patent families in seven categories: nutrition, health, management, genetics, infrastructure/facilities, physiological and behavioral indicators, and traceability/certification. The largest number of patent families corresponded to the areas of rural facilities, animal nutrition, health, and new physiological and behavioral indicators, totaling 73%. The temporal distribution of these records shows that the interest of researchers in promoting technological innovations focused on well-being began in 1995, with expressiveness from 2013. It should also be noted that the largest registration of patent families comes from China (51%), followed by European countries, which account for 23%, and the United States (19%), while Brazil represents only 6% of the total documents. Despite the recent patent registrations related to cattle, there has been an increase in recent years, denoting the growth of efforts for technological innovation of this productive chain regarding animal welfare.

The purpose of this study was to clarify how Japanese nurse managers (i.e., “shunin”) or higher-ranked positions self-rate their nursing management competencies and to identify factors associated with their ability to develop staff. Data were collected using a questionnaire based on the 41-item Management Index for Nurses. This index assesses the competencies related to six components of nursing management: planning, motivating staff, developing staff, communication, organization, and ensuring safety. The total possible score is 205 points. The mean percentage score for each component was calculated based on the responses from 118 participants (107 women; mean age = 44.1 ± 7.0 years). Results showed that the mean percentage score for competencies related to ensuring safety was, by far, the highest (71.8%), and the lowest was for competencies related to organization (47.6%). Principal factors found to be associated with participants’ ability to develop staff were “gathering and using information” (a subscale of “educational background and interests”) and “supportiveness of the work environment”. These results suggest that, to improve nurse managers’ competencies related to their ability to develop staff, hospitals need to establish continuing education systems that offer nurse managers convenient educational opportunities in management science, either on-site or at a higher education institution; and develop an in-house support system that enables managers to obtain counseling when practical management concerns cause them stress.

A brief overview of the history of the development of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in international populations is considered, before describing the current treatment with standard antiretroviral therapy (ART). The link between HIV infection and the development of cancers is discussed, along with the classification of tumours which define the development of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and those which do not define AIDS but remain more common in HIV-infected populations. The challenges of treating cancer in an immunosuppressed poulation are raised, and the importance of seeking expert opinion on this treatment is flagged. The chapter concludes with an overview of the nursing management of patients with both HIV infection and cancer, with particular regard to patient education, the adapting of standard oncological treatments to meet the needs of this population, and the management of patients who may be stigmatized by HIV infection.
