Paleopathological study of the Egyptian mummies collected in Italy: the Anubis project

Eighty-five Egyptian mummies belonging to different dynastic periods and collected in a number of Italian museums, have been censed and submitted for paleopathological research. In most cases the presence of bandages required the application of X- rays and computed axial tomography (CAT). Fifty-two mummies have been studied in situ with Xrays; twelve with CAT scanning. Technical problems kept us from investigating eleven of the censed mummies. In a few cases it was possible to perform autopsies, endoscopy, or histological studies. The mummies submitted for X- rays were divided into two groups: The first group thirty-six mummies studied by the team of Paleopathology-Egyptology of the University of Pisa were studied for the first time. The second group was composed of twenty-six mummies studied elsewhere in Italy. Those results also have been included in the Anubi Project database.

Residual stresses on the inner surface of stainless steel pipe used in nuclear reactors are of exceptional importance. Apparatus for measuring these in situ, in welded lengths of 10-inch diameter austenitic (304) stainless pipe has been developed at the University of Denver Research Institute under the sponsorship of the Electric Power Research Institute.

AbstractA 42-year-old female Jordanian patient presented with a history of sudden painful dysphagia following swallowing of a fish bone. Though soft tissue X-rays showed a foreign body in the neck, repeated oesophagoscopies failed to reveal it. Computed axial tomography was done and showed a fish bone embedded in the left thyroid lobe. Left thyroid lobectomy was carried out and the fish bone was seen within the lobe surrounded by an area of acute inflammation.

Background: Due to the importance of function and cosmetics, periocular skin malignancies represent a therapeutic challenge. Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of radiotherapy (RT) treating periocular skin tumors. Methods: Data of patients with periocular tumors treated with grenz or soft X-rays at the University Hospital Zurich, Switzerland, between 2009 and 2014 were reviewed. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with associated in situ lesions, cutaneous melanoma, lentigo maligna (LM), cutaneous lymphoma and Kaposi’s sarcoma were included in the analysis. Results: We found 159 periocular lesions in 145 patients. Overall recurrence was highest for actinic keratosis and Bowen’s disease (27%), melanoma (17%) and LM (15%), whereas SCC and BCC showed recurrence in 11 and 10%, respectively. 45% of all recurrences occurred within 12 months after treatment, with a median time to recurrence of 13 months (range 3–73). Conclusion: RT, which provides a good therapeutic response with minimal adverse events, is a therapy option for periocular cutaneous malignancies.

The history of the development of the Moscow neurological school in the late 19th - early 20th centuries. is, in essence, the history of the clinic of nervous diseases named after A.Ya. Kozhevnikov Moscow Medical Academy named after I.M. Sechenov. The teaching of nervous and mental diseases began at the departments of pathology and therapy of Moscow University, headed by the most prominent clinicians M.Ya. Mudrov, I.E. Dyadkovsky, I.V. Varvinsky, I.T. Glebov and A.I. Polunin long before the creation of a neurological clinic. The new university charter of 1863, among others, provided for the organization of a clinic for nervous and mental diseases, and therefore in the same year the medical faculty recommended A.Ya. Kozhevnikov as a worthy candidate for heading a new department or course of nervous and mental diseases. According to the traditions of A.Ya. Kozhevnikov in 1866 was sent abroad for 3 years. He worked in clinics and laboratories headed by the largest specialists in neuropsychiatry and physiologists (J.-M. Charcot, V. Grisinger, E. Dubois-Raymond, etc.). During this period A.Ya. Kozhevnikov performed several independent histological studies. In 1869, the university council elected A.Ya. Kozhevnikov for the position of Associate Professor of Nervous Diseases and Psychiatry. In the summer of 1869, after returning from an overseas business trip, he headed the independent department of nervous and mental diseases created for the first time in the world and already in December submitted to the dean A.I. Polunin, a curriculum for teaching nervous diseases and psychiatry, began to give a course of lectures on nervous and mental diseases and to conduct practical classes on nervous diseases.

The excellent conservation and remarkable accuracy of the embalming of an Egyptian mummy’s head, kept from 1818 at the Museum of the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Pavia, prompted further study using medical and anthropological analyses. Standard X-rays, computerized axial tomography, 14C analysis, sex attribution using aDNA from bone, and human biological typification through microscopic analysis of hair were performed. Based on our research, the mummy does not show evidence of pathological alterations. It appears to be an adolescent male. It is likely that he lived before the 18th dynasty and belonged to a North African area of Caucasian population, and to a high social class.

In the history of botany, Adam Zalužanský (d. 1613), a Bohemian physician, apothecary, botanist and professor at the University of Prague, is a little-known personality. Linnaeus's first biographers, for example, only knew Zalužanský from hearsay and suspected he was a native of Poland. This ignorance still pervades botanical history. Zalužanský is mentioned only peripherally or not at all. As late as the nineteenth century, a researcher would be unaware that Zalužanský’s main work Methodi herbariae libri tres actually existed in two editions from two different publishers (1592, Prague; 1604, Frankfurt). This paper introduces the life and work of Zalužanský. Special attention is paid to the chapter “De sexu plantarum” of Zalužanský’s Methodus, in which, more than one hundred years before the well-known De sexu plantarum epistola of R. J. Camerarius, the sexuality of plants is suggested. Additionally, for the first time, an English translation of Zalužanský’s chapter on plant sexuality is provided.

Scholars interested in the Christian Apocrypha (CA) typically appeal to CA collections when in need of primary sources. But many of these collections limit themselves to material believed to have been written within the first to fourth centuries CE. As a result a large amount of non-canonical Christian texts important for the study of ancient and medieval Christianity have been neglected. The More Christian Apocrypha Project will address this neglect by providing a collection of new editions (some for the first time) of these texts for English readers. The project is inspired by the More Old Testament Pseudepigrapha Project headed by Richard Bauckham and Jim Davila from the University of Edinburgh. Like the MOTP, the MCAP is envisioned as a supplement to an earlier collection of texts—in this case J. K. Elliott’s The Apocryphal New Testament (Oxford 1991), the most recent English-language CA collection (but now almost two decades old). The texts to be included are either absent in Elliott or require significant revision. Many of the texts have scarcely been examined in over a century and are in dire need of new examination. One of the goals of the project is to spotlight the abilities and achievements of English (i.e., British and North American) scholars of the CA, so that English readers have access to material that has achieved some exposure in French, German, and Italian collections.

Understanding the dynamic self-assembly behaviour of azobenzene photosurfactants (AzoPS) is crucial to advance their use in controlled release applications such as<i></i>drug delivery and micellar catalysis. Currently, their behaviour in the equilibrium <i>cis-</i>and <i>trans</i>-photostationary states is more widely understood than during the photoisomerisation process itself. Here, we investigate the time-dependent self-assembly of the different photoisomers of a model neutral AzoPS, <a>tetraethylene glycol mono(4′,4-octyloxy,octyl-azobenzene) </a>(C<sub>8</sub>AzoOC<sub>8</sub>E<sub>4</sub>) using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). We show that the incorporation of <i>in-situ</i>UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy with SANS allows the scattering profile, and hence micelle shape, to be correlated with the extent of photoisomerisation in real-time. It was observed that C<sub>8</sub>AzoOC<sub>8</sub>E<sub>4</sub>could switch between wormlike micelles (<i>trans</i>native state) and fractal aggregates (under UV light), with changes in the self-assembled structure arising concurrently with changes in the absorption spectrum. Wormlike micelles could be recovered within 60 seconds of blue light illumination. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the degree of AzoPS photoisomerisation has been tracked <i>in</i><i>-situ</i>through combined UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy-SANS measurements. This technique could be widely used to gain mechanistic and kinetic insights into light-dependent processes that are reliant on self-assembly.

<div>The first total synthesis of rhabdastrellic acid A, a highly cytotoxic isomalabaricane triterpenoid, has been accomplished in a linear sequence of 14 steps from commercial geranylacetone. The prominently strained <i>trans-syn-trans</i>-perhydrobenz[<i>e</i>]indene core characteristic of the isomalabaricanes is efficiently accessed in a selective manner for the first time through a rapid, complexity-generating sequence incorporating a reductive radical polyene cyclization, an unprecedented oxidative Rautenstrauch cycloisomerization, and umpolung 𝛼-substitution of a <i>p</i>-toluenesulfonylhydrazone with in situ reductive transposition. A late-stage cross-coupling in concert with a modular approach to polyunsaturated side chains renders this a general strategy for the synthesis of numerous family members of these synthetically challenging and hitherto inaccessible marine triterpenoids.</div>
