The research objectives were to explore and describe the nature of communication with the mentally retarded adult during treatment of minor ailments; and to describe guidelines for the community nurse in order to facilitate more effective communication during the treatment of minor ailments in the mentally retarded adult for the promotion, maintenance and restoration of the mentally retarded individual’s health. The community nurse pays attention to the protection of the mentally retarded individual’s health, and identifies and treats minor ailments encountered by the mentally retarded individual. Because of the disability of the adults, lacking communication and obstacles in the exchange and interpretation of communication, could take place between the community nurse and the mentally retarded adult. The responsibility lies with the community nurse to facilitate effective communication, since the mentally retarded individual is not always capable of speaking on his/her own behalf. Guidelines are needed for the facilitation of effective communication between the community nurse and the mentally retarded adult during the treatment of minor ailments. In this research, use were made of a qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual design. The research method consisted of participative observation during which video recording and the taking of field notes were applied. Two themes were identified during data analysis, namely: ^Verbal communication is aimed at the treatment of wounds. The more functional and task-orientated the community nurse’s interaction with the mentally retarded individual, the more the mentally retarded individual would generate symptoms to establish emotional contact and interaction; The non-verbal behaviour of the community nurse focuses on the treatment of wounds and organisation of the environment. The more structure is created, the more play-out-behaviour is shown by the mentally retarded individual in need of contact. The researcher came to the conclusion that the community nurse refrains form near/close contact with the mentally retarded individual, to bridge her own discomfort. The community nurse is “busy” with the act of treating wounds, in order to refrain from effective interaction.

This article reports on a research study done in Katutura Township, near Windhoek. A qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual design was followed to answer the research question investigating experiences of mothers caring for mentally retarded children at home. Phenomenological interviews were conducted with a purposefully selected sample of twelve mothers. The meaning of their experiences was analysed by using Teschxs method (1990 in Creswell, 1994:155) of analysing qualitative data. The results indicated various emotions and challenges experienced by these mothers during the care of their children. Feelings of shock, despondency and sadness dominated the early stages when the retarded children were still young. During later years, as the children were growing up, the mothers felt shame, fear, frustration, anger, disappointment and worry. However, acceptance followed, as the children grew older. Stigma seemed to affect all the respondents. Support in any form or lack thereof seemed to be the decisive factor-positioning mothers along a continuum of two extremes, namely despairing isolation and integrated happiness. Recommendations were made regarding the improvement of heath care services and education of the mothers and their families.

ISBN 019 5532740 Those who knew Burnet only after he had become a successful and widely respected scientist will be surprised to learn from this biography that, when younger, he had been shy and diffident. There is, however, no room for doubt about this. Sexton quotes illustrative comments by others, passages from diaries, and the autobiography published in 1968. Shyness and diffidence were not familial traits: there are 15 Bumet(t)s in the DNB , and F.M. Burnet claims five Fellows of the Royal Society as collaterals. The shyness may have arisen from his mother’s preoccupation with the care of his mentally-retarded elder sister and the failure to make close contact with his father, a banker who had emigrated from Scotland to Australia in 1880. The young Burnet became an assiduous reader, with a keen interest in natural history and a special interest in beetles.

This research is about the implementation of action song in improving mentally retarded students’ (type C1) vocabulary attainment. This research is aimed to understand the implementation of action song improves students’ vocabulary attainment and to find out the difficulties in implementing process. The research design used was an exploratory design. In doing this research, I collected research data by applying observation checklists, video recording, and interviews as research instrument. In the implementation I found difficulties: most of students were shy, they did not want to do action song in front of the class; made all students to sing aloud the song while doing action song was difficult, there were only some students could do it better than before; they liked to follow the move of the action song, but they could not mention the name of part of the body they were touching. From the interview I found that, 68% participants believed English language learning is needed for mentally retarded students, 74% participants believed action song helps mentally retarded students attaining English vocabulary, 90% participants believed action song helps mentally retarded students more active in learning activity, 96% participants believed action song is appropriate to be applied in English learning for mentally retarded students, 66% participants argued that mentally retarded students enthused studying English at school or home, and 68% participants argued that mentally retarded students had interest about something related to English.

In recognition of the upsurge of interest in mental retardation, the Council on Mental Health and the Committee on Maternal and Child Care of the American Medical Association recently convened a group of 175 experts in mental retardation. Grouped in fourteen task forces, these authorities met in Chicago in April, 1964, to draw up guidelines to aid the practicing physican in meeting the needs of the mentally retarded individual and his family. This handbook is the result of the work of these task forces.

Аннотация: Cтатья посвящена вопросу эффективного общения путем кинесической системы, а именно жестовой невербальной коммуникации и ее преимуществе в культурном, социологическом и профессиональном аспектах жизни. В ней объясняется значимость языка телодвижений между представителями разных культур, так как международные контакты становятся неизбежной взаимосвязью между людьми. В последствии, коммуникация осуществляется представителями разных культур. Естественно, чтобы достичь эффективности в общении, собеседники с уважением и пониманием должны относится к друг другу. Приводятся примеры форм жестов и их семантическая трактовка разными культурами. Целью данной статьи является представление кинесической системы ввиду одного из базовых условий в достижении эффективной коммуникации. It explains the importance of body language between people of different cultures, since international contacts are becoming an inevitable relationship between people. Subsequently, communication is carried out by representatives of different cultures. Naturally, to achieve effectiveness in communication, the interlocutors with respect and understanding should relate to each other's culture. Forms of gestures and their semantic interpretation by different cultures are given as the examples. The purpose of this article is to present the kinesic system as one of the basic conditions for achieving effective communication.
