Church ministry to post-modern city dwellers The world today is characterised by postmodernism and urbanisation. Both these processes have a serious impact on the world as we know it – on social life, and also on the ministry of the church. Working from a practical-theological foundation, the church is defined as a “called community of believers”. The issue, however, is how this community should effectively and practically live out their faith in an urbanised post-modern world. This issue is investigated and suggestions in this regard are made.

ABSTRACT: This article aims to look at the principles of the idea of global ethics at the implementation of the advanced city in the present day or modern city. The concept of global ethics logically can be considered in a certain local as the common foundations of ethical living in this universal city. Using literature method, the author tries to positively see from the idea of a global ethic associated with globalism, pluralism, secularism, postmodernism, ecumenism and humanitarianism that form the concept of global ethics, which are selectively used to add the principle of good livelihood for the civilization of the world today. The author subsequently tries to see a multidimensional pluralistic city today with a conflict on religious factors, which require a more fundamental principle of unity and universal living. Therefore global ethics is not a substitute for existing religious ethics, but additional ethics for people of different religion without discrimination. Among the preparatory prayers of the Mass, there are these words from Psalm 42: “Judge me, O God, and distinguish my cause from the nation that is not holy.” However inadequately accomplished, the purpose of this essay is to affirm and distinguish our cause as Catholic minds and human beings from the nation and from the world that are not holy—to affirm the strength and meaning of the world of the Church for our varied worlds of living and working. As Christopher Dawson points out in a remarkable essay, there is, even in the modern world, “a tradition of sacred culture which it has been the mission of the Church to nourish and preserve”—and to nourish and preserve it even in the nation that is not holy. “However secularized our modern civilization may become,” Dawson continues, “this sacred tradition [this sacred life] remains like a river in the desert, and a genuine religious education can still use it to irrigate the thirsty lands and to change the face of the world with the promise of a new life. The great obstacle is the failure of Christians themselves to understand the depth of that tradition and the inexhaustible possibilities of new life that it contains.”

SummaryThis paper is an analysis of two influential theologians who advocate the need for the Church as an institution to break with its tradition and set out on a journey of accommodation with the new realities of the world today. This journey proposed by Edward Schillebeeckx and Albert Nolan is panoramic since it investigates the possibility and necessity for the church to engage in a fair dialogue with society. At the end of this irregular trip into cohesion, this study will present the outcome of both Schillebeeckx and Nolan’ positions toward liberal theology as an alternative to dogmatism and political crisis. Therefore, the main objective of this study will be to facilitate a better understanding of the church and its tenets in its relationship with the oppressed and marginalized of the present times. The context in which Schillebeeckx and Nolan develop their respective theologies will be approached as two separate social realities of our present time, namely the Western culture and the African society. The aim is to determine the degree in which the liberty they both search for is taken into account by these two thinkers and how illustrative and relevant their perspective on church, God, history and suffering is for men and women living in nowadays eventful history.

<p><em>Today’s Indonesian youth consider Pancasila a history and a foundation. It effect to the reducing sense of nationalism in their souls, moreover with the lack of effectiveness in learning and understanding the values of Pancasila. Young Generation is a translation of young generation instead old age. Youth means the population of teenagers or young people who are still developing. Generation Z are those who are born after the internet era- generations who enjoyed the technology after the birth of the internet. This generation can be said as people who have grown up or have jobs and other things that can affect the economy, politics and social life in the world today. Generation Z as stated by Aulia Adam, 28 April 2017, in this world, there has never been a generation that was born familiar with technology. Generasi Muda adalah terjemahan dari young generation lawan dari <em>old age</em>. <em>Youth</em> mengandung arti populasi remaja atau anak muda atau pemuda yang sedang membentuk dirinya. Genersi Z adalah mereka yang lahir setelah generasi internet – generasi yang sudah menikmati keajiban teknologi usai kelahiran internet. Generasi ini dapat dikatakan sebagai orang yang sudah beranjak dewasa atau sudah punya pekerjaan dan hal-hal lain yang bisa mempengaruhi ekonomi, politik dan kehidupan sosial dunia kini. Generasi Z dikatakan oleh Aulia  Adam, 28 April 2017. didunia belum pernah ada generasi yang sejak lahir sudah akrab dengan teknologi. Ini merupakan penyebab dari pengaruh derasnya globalisasi teknologi saat ini sehingga solusi yang dapat kita lakukan yaitu dengan adanya kerja sama antara pemerintah, orangtua dan lembaga pendidikan untuk terus mengawasi tindakan dan perilaku generasi muda yang diiringi dengan memberikan pemahaman dan pengarahan akan nilai-nilai Pancasila. Generasi-generasi baru inilah yang dapat menyebabkan adanya penyimpangan nilai-nilai Panacasila dan sekaligus lunturnya kristalisasi Pancasila. Pada penulisan ini, metode penulisan yang digunakan adalah metode studi literatur.</p><p><strong>Kata kunci</strong> : Generasi muda, Penyimpangan nilai-nilai Pancasila, Lunturnya Pancasila, gadget, Era Millennial.</p>

A catechist can be called a missionary and saint. This call is very appropriate considering their role in the missionary work of the Church. This research will answer two questions: (1) What is the role of catechists in the missionary work of the Church? (2) What is the professional catechism model in the midst of the needs of the world today? This study uses a qualitative method of literature study. Through this paper, it will be explained that in the mission of the Church, the catechist acts as a spokesman for the Christian congregation, a prophet, an educator and a witness. Where as the professional catechists needed are catechists who always present the Holy Spirit as their soul and missionary spirit while equipping themselves with skills and knowledge.

The doctrine of predestination in the Lutheran and Calvinist theology, along with the assumption of a radical separation of nature and grace as well as the material and spiritual realm, had a significant impact on social life. The salvation of the soul, the soteriological dimension of human destiny, remained dependent on the grace of God (predestination), undeserved and unfathomable. The earthly reality, the institution of the Church and good works could in no way contribute to the salvation of the soul. Martin Luther, especially at the initial stage of his reformation activities, focused on private spirituality, considering the earthly dimension of reality to be the domain of the secular power. John Calvin and his successors justified in their teachings a different attitude manifested in the interest in the earthly world based on religious ethics. The doctrine of predestination, therefore, did not result in, as one would expect, quietism but in activism. The Calvinists believed that predestination was not manifested in single good deeds but in a certain methodology of systematised life based on religious ethics. Religiousness was supposed to be expressed through activity in the world and was meant to show the glory of its Creator. Work, thrift and honesty were supposed to lead to the rebirth, i.e. “sanctification” of the world, and were the essence of what Max Weber called the spirit of capitalism. Calvinism led to changes in the approach to such economic issues as money lending at interest, work or enrichment.

A practical theological investigation on preaching and the effect of social cognition in the act of contextualisation. It is indicated in recent research that church and society are conscious of each other through their observation of one another – a process also known as social cognition. This article intends to investigate the manner in which the church is observingsociety. The following research question is stated: Which role can preaching play to foster good neighbourship in society and what is the aspects that influence the cognition of the church as community of believers? This research will be undertaken from a practical-theological vantage point. This field of research shows a tangency with the fields of Ecclesiology and Missiology. From these two fields the importance of the practical-theological field of research will be indicated. This research will further investigate the problematic praxis through an intradisciplinary discourse with the field of Social Psychology. In this exposition it will be indicated that the founding and functioning of social cognition is a natural process although it also has it complexities. From a normative vantage point investigation on Jeremiah 29 and Matthew 5 will be undertaken in order to state that the right cognition is important for internalising sermons and the conveyance of sermons into daily life. Distortions, in the process of social cognition, can also cultivate a wrong view on what it entails to be salt and light in the world. Practical-theoretical perspectives on the benefit of a good name in society will be provided that will be favourable for the preaching of the Word.Keyword: Homiletics

People all over the world today have to compete for their daily bread and struggle to make ends meet. This represents the arena where humans battle to cope with the complexities of daily life. At the same time theytry to find meaning in life and guidelines to live life well. It is here, in ordinary real life, where wisdom and folly compete for human loyalties and where the divine and the human meet (O’Connor, 1993:14). It is here where Proverbs 3 gives us diverse guidelines on how to live wisely in a modern world.
