ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of the study is to assess the prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment needs among 12-15 years old school children of Udaipur, India. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive survey was conducted among 887 subjects aged 12-15 years. The prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment needs was assessed using dental aesthetic index (World Health Organization, 1997). General information on demographic data was also recorded. Chi-square test, analysis of variance and Scheffe′s test were employed for statistical analysis. Results: Malocclusion and orthodontic treatment need was reported among 33.3% of the study subjects. A significant age and gender difference depicting preponderance among younger age group and a male proclivity was experiential. A significant improvement in anterior crowding and largest anterior maxillary irregularity with age was documented. Males had a significantly higher prevalence of anterior crowding, midline diastema and largest anterior maxillary irregularity than females. Conclusions: The prevalence of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment needs among school children of Udaipur city, Rajasthan, India was found to be 33.3%.A significant age and gender difference was observed in prevalence of malocclusion, crowding and largest anterior maxillary irregularity. Midline diastema showed a significant gender difference. The baseline information outlined in the present study can be appropriately utilized for the future planning to meet the orthodontic treatment need among the population.

Abstract: Introduction and aim: To evaluate the frequency and severity of the malocclusions and treatment need in a group of adult patients in Târgu-Mureș, dividing them up according to age and gender. Method: Sixty-four, randomly selected patients were divided up according to age and gender. Ten occlusal traits related to dentofacial anomalies according to missing teeth, spacing, crowding and occlusion were used to evaluate the malocclusions on each of their study cast. The Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI) regression equation was used to obtain the DAI score that defines severity. Results: The average DAI score was 38 with a range of 18–79, showing that the majority of patients needed mandatory orthodontic treatment. No statistically significant difference was found between gender, age groups and need for treatment. Conclusion: More than two-fifths of the examined patients have a mandatory need for orthodontic treatment if the DAI scores are the main screening tool. Orv Hetil. 2018; 159(9): 352–356.

Background: The study aimed to analyse the trends in the growth pattern of the children in the age group of 3-21 years of both boys and girls using body mass index (BMI). The study also compared the BMI of the sample with the WHO norms and the group average.Methods: A study was conducted in India covering 1728 children 849 boys and 879 girls from LKG grade to +2 grades in the age group of 3-21 years. BMI grades were computed as per WHO 2006 standards (underweight- <18.50, normal- 18.50-24.99, overweight- >25.00 and obese- >30.00). Results were analyzed using percentage and ANOVA.Results: The data shows that 88.9% of children in the age group of 3-8 years are underweight and in 15-21 years of age children are relatively healthy, but are inclined to move to overweight (17.66%) and obesity (7.21%). More of boys (31%) tend to be underweight than girls. Age and gender were found to be significantly related to BMI. The average BMI of the sample group is above the national standards of WHO (World Health Organization) in all the three age groups. Boys are found to be on par with WHO norms while girls exceed the same. Majority of the sample were below the average denoting underweight.Conclusions: Age and gender was significantly related with BMI. Average BMI of the sample was on par with national standard of WHO. BMI was thus found to be an effective tool for predicting the well-being of school children.

Introduction:The practice of orthodontics is very young in South-South Nigeria and there is need for base line data for informed planning. This study was carried out to investigate the self-perception of malocclusion among Nigerian school children aged 12 to 18 years in order to compare their perception with that of an orthodontist and also to determine the influence of gender and age on self-perception.Materials and Methodology:A total of 612 randomly selected schoolchildren comprising 299 (48.9%) males and 313 (51.1%) females with a mean age of 15 + 2.0 years were included in the study, the Aesthetic Component (AC) of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) was the instrument used to measure the perception of malocclusion by both the school children and the orthodontist.Results:Majority of the students (82.5%) rated their teeth towards the more attractive end of the scale (Grades 1-4). Although self - perception was not found to be related to gender, older children (16-18 years) had an increased level of perception of need. Males and older children were found to be more in need of treatment by the orthodontist.Conclusions:A significant difference was found between the orthodontist’s rating and the students’ ratings of the attractiveness of their occlusions. Age and gender were not found to influence self- perceived orthodontic treatment need. Therefore, for effective orthodontic care, self- perception and not only professional assessment must be taken into consideration when formulating treatment plans to ensure patient satisfaction.

Abstract: Orthodontic treatment need increases with the number of cases of malocclusion as one of the major problems in Indonesia and an oral health problems are sufficiently large as dental caries and periodontal disease. Orthodontic treatment need in a population is described by one measure, namely Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). The purpose of this study was to determine the needs of orthodontic treatment in the second-grade students of Junior High School 2 Bitung based IOTN consisting of Aesthetic Component and Dental Health Component. It was a cross sectional study of descriptive obsevational, conducted in Junior High School 2 Bitung at December 2013. It research was used the total population of the second grade students of Junior High School 2 Bitung, amounting to 460 students. The results showed, orthodontic care needs based on the AC is 304 people 77 % do not require nursing care or only mild, 74 people 19% of borderline and need care 18 4.5 really need treatment. While orthodontic treatment needs based DHC is 76% of 303 people do not require treatment or light treatment only, 63 people took care borderline 16%, 7.6% and 30 people really need treatment. Orthodontic treatment need by Index of Orthodontic Treatment Needs in second grade at Junior High School 2 Bitung mostly do not require or need minor maintenance in AC 77% and DHC 76%.Keywords: treatment need, IOTN, Student junior High School.  Abstrak: Kebutuhan perawatan ortodonsi meningkat seiring bertambahnya jumlah kasus maloklusi sebagai salah satu permasalahan utama di Indonesia dan merupakan masalah kesehatan gigi dan mulut yang cukup besar setelah karies gigi dan penyakit periodontal. Kebutuhan perawatan ortodonsi pada suatu populasi digambarkan dengan salah satu alat ukur yaitu Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN). Tujuan penelitian ini ialah untuk mengetahui kebutuhan perawatan ortodonsi pada siswa-siswi kelas II SMP Negeri 2 Bitung berdasarkan IOTN yang terdiri dari Aesthetic Component (AC) dan Dental Health Component (DHC). Penelitian ini merupakan suatu penelitian Cross sectional yang bersifat deskriptif observasional, yang dilakukan di SMP Negeri 2 Bitung pada bulan Desember 2013. Pengambilan sampel pada penelitian ini menggunakan teknik total populasi pada siswa-siswi kelas II di SMP Negeri 2 Bitung yang berjumlah 460 orang. Hasil penelitian didapatkan, kebutuhan perawatan ortodonsi berdasarkan AC yaitu 304 orang 77 % tidak membutuhkan perawatan atau hanya perawatan ringan, 74 orang 18,7% butuh perawatan borderline dan 18 orang 4,5 sangat butuh perawatan. Sedangkan kebutuhan perawatan ortodonsi berdasarkan DHC yaitu 303 orang 76,5% tidak membutuhkan perawatan atau hanya perawatan ringan, 63 orang 15,9% butuh perawatan borderline, dan 30 orang 7,6% sangat butuh perawatan. Kebutuhan perawatan ortodonsi berdasarkan IOTN pada siswa kelas II di SMP Negeri 2 Bitung sebagian besar tidak membutuhkan atau butuh perawatan ringan pada AC 77% dan DHC 76%. AbstractGrowth charts are used to detect growth impairment, overweight, and obesity among Down syndrome (DS) children belonging to different population groups. Due to nonavailability of similar information, age, and gender specific body mass index (BMI) charts for DS children of Indian origin, based on serial data, have been developed. A total of 752 boys and 373 girls diagnosed as cases of DS at <1 month to 10 years of age enrolled from the “genetic clinic” were followed up in the “growth clinic/growth laboratory” of the institute, following a mixed-longitudinal growth research design. BMI was calculated from body weight and length/height measured at 6-month-age intervals by using standardized techniques and instruments. Age and sex-specific percentile growth charts for BMI were generated for age range <1 month to 10 years by using the LMS method. DS children remained wasted (BMI <3rd percentile) up to 6 months of age; thereafter, BMI increased to exhibit close similarity with their normal Multicentre Growth Reference Study (World Health Organization 2006) and Indian Academy of Pediatrics (2015) counterparts up to 5 to 10 years, respectively. The percentage of obese DS girls (8.76%) outnumbered boys with DS (4.1%). The use of age and gender specific BMI growth charts may be made for comparative purpose, to assess nutritional status of Indian children with DS, to initiate suitable need-based intervention to improve their overall health and for timely institution of target interventions to prevent growth faltering in this vulnerable population.
