Qualitative research proceeds from the position that there is no one observable reality. Researchers utilizing qualitative methods build findings inductively, from raw data to a conceptual understanding. Theoretical frameworks may be utilized to guide qualitative analyses by suggesting concepts and relationships to explore. The framework may provide a sense of the story emerging from the analyses. And concurrently, the rich description provided by the analyses may allow the framework to be more deeply appreciated. However, there is a risk that using a theoretical framework may stifle inductive reasoning or result in findings incongruent to the data. The following is a discussion of the application of a theoretical framework in a qualitative study. This study, guided by the Common-Sense Model, explores the choice to undergo treatment for Hepatitis C Virus among veterans. Examples from the analyses are provided to facilitate discussion on the utilization of a theoretical framework. Techniques to optimize the use of a theoretical framework, as well as mitigate risks of such use, are presented. When utilized alongside rigorous data analyses and introspection, a theoretical framework may serve as a valuable tool to navigate data in qualitative research.

In delineating the painful experiences of LGBTQ individuals after the introduction of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code R Raj Rao’s works look into the struggle of these people to survive the onslaught of normative sexual discourses. Given the fact that Queer sexuality has been continuously questioned, suspected and tormented prior to its legitimate recognition in 2018, Rao draws attention to the nuances of gay urban life in India. The paper critically analyses the representation of gay subculture in the cities of India as reflected in select works of Rao. It demystifies how gay people share the urban space, manage to make room for their pleasure in the cities, and pose a threat to the dominant understanding of sexuality. The ultimate objective of this paper is to understand the role of the city in the (un)making of a subcultural identity. Textual analysis, with reference to certain theoretical frameworks, would be used as a qualitative research method.

Previous reviews of research have documented the increasing use of qualitative inquiry in physical education. In this research note, the authors present a content analysis of qualitative research articles published between 1998 and 2008 in the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education (JTPE). A total of 110 empirical articles were published that included a qualitative component, 38.2% of those used mixed methods. Results include analyses of types of qualitative research, research focus, theoretical frameworks, data collection techniques, trustworthiness techniques, and participants. The Research Authorship Score revealed that qualitative research tends to rely on teams of researchers in the conduct of studies. By extending previous work, this study reveals that qualitative research continues to play a significant role in research on physical education.

Editors Anfara and Mertz travel a new road with their tidy little book, Theoretical Frameworks in Qualitative Research. This tightly edited book begins by providing an up-close look at the process of taking a book from the germination of an idea to the delivery of the final product. As noted in the introduction, "To understand a theory is to travel into someone else’s mind." Most of the book clears the path toward that journey by presenting a sampler of chapters focusing on the use of theoretical frameworks in actual qualitative research studies. Finally, the editors bring the book full circle by summarizing the various roles theoretical frameworks played in the preceding chapters. This book provides a common basis for quantitative and qualitative researchers to continue the discussion about the role of theory in qualitative research.

Qualitative methodology is extensively used in a wide range of scientific areas, such as Sociology and Psychology, and it is been used to study individual and household decision making processes. However, in the Transportation Planning and Engineering domain it is still infrequent to find in the travel behavior literature studies using qualitative techniques to explore activity-travel decisions. The aim of this paper is first, to provide an overview of the types of qualitative techniques available and to explore how to correctly implement them. Secondly, to highlight the special characteristics of qualitative methods that make them appropriate to study activity-travel decision processes. Far from been an unempirical or intuitive methodology, using qualitative methods properly implies a strong foundation on theoretical frameworks, a careful design of data collection and a deep data analysis. For such a purpose, a review of the scarce activity-travel behavior literature using qualitative methods, or a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches, is presented. The use of qualitative techniques can play a role of being a supplementary way of obtaining information related to activity-travel decisions which otherwise it would be extremely difficult to find. OBJECTIVES/GOALS: The purpose of this 4-phase exploratory study is to create a human-centered protocol for a new program, CAPABLE-FAMILY, to address older adults with physical disability and dementia and their caregivers. METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: The Szanton-Gill Resilience Model, Verbrugge & Jett Disablement, and Life Span Theory of Control are theoretical frameworks guiding this study. Phase 1. Using qualitative research (n = 10 dyads) methods (ex. Photovoice) we seek to understand the context for older adults with dementia regarding disability. Phase 2. Using synthesis/ideation (n = 10 dyads) tools (ex. Journey Maps) we will synthesize the qualitative research during group ideation sessions with stakeholders. Phase 3. Using prototype testing (n = 3 dyads) methods (ex. Semantic Differentials, Storyboards), we will build the most promising prototypes. Phase 4. Using an open-label pilot (n = 3 dyads), we will test the interventions. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: We will assess disability (ADL, IADL), environmental changes pain, depression, polypharmacy, provider communication needs, and caregiver burden. We will interview the dyads and multiple CAPABLE Registered Nurses (RN), Occupational Therapists (OT), and Handymen (HM) about their prior experiences and perceptions of the pilot. CFQ, MocA, pain (BPI), and ZBI will be measured pre/post RN, OT, HM visit. While there are evidence-based programs to separately address cognitive impairment and physical disability, we anticipate this is the first study to develop a community-based goal-directed, human-centered approach for the maintenance of physical function for persons with dementia in the home. DISCUSSION/SIGNIFICANCE OF IMPACT: Persons with more cognitive impairment did not improve as much as those with less cognitive impairment in the original CAPABLE study, an evidenced based program which reduced disability. This suggests the need to adapt CAPABLE to reduce the burden of disability in persons with Alzheimer’s dementia. CONFLICT OF INTEREST DESCRIPTION: None

In general, an appreciation of the standards of qualitative research and the types of qualitative data analysis available to researchers have not kept pace with the growing presence of qualitative studies in medical science. To help rectify this problem, the authors clarify qualitative research reliability, validity, sampling, and generalizability. They also provide 3 major theoretical frameworks for data collection and analysis that investigators may consider adopting. These 3 approaches are ethnography, existential phenomenology, and grounded theory. For each, the basic steps of data collection and analysis involved are presented, along with real-life examples of how they can contribute to improving medical care.
