EFFECTS OF AMMONIATION ON THE COMPOSITION AND NUTRITIONAL QUALITY OF LOW GLUCOSINOLATE RAPESEED (CANOLA) MEAL

Commercial No. 1 Candle rapeseed (canola) (Brassica campestris) was prepress solvent extracted and heated to 105 °C at the desolventizing step (control meal). Samples of the canola (low glucosinolate) meal were also treated with ammonia or steam or both at the desolventizing step. The meals were analyzed chemically and subsequently fed to 70 growing pigs in a factorial experiment. Digestibility of the meals was determined separately. Ammoniation increased the crude protein (% N × 6.25) concentration from 39 to 42%, decreased the proportion of alkaline soluble nitrogen and increased the available lysine level. Both ammonia and steam reduced glucosinolate concentrations but usually at least half the glucosinolates remained after any treatment. Compared with a soybean meal control diet, diets containing 10% treated canola meals did not affect daily gains, feed intakes or feed:gain ratios when fed to pigs. Ammoniation had little effect on crude protein digestibility of canola meal but, in combination with steam, reduced the energy digestibility. Based on these results, there appeared to be no advantage in ammoniating canola meal as a means of improving its nutritional quality in swine diets. Two experiments of a factorial design (sex × treatment) were conducted to determine the effects of enzyme and salinomycin supplementation on the nutritive value of barley or rye-based diets for growing pigs fed from approximately 20 to 85 kg. For exp. 1, 72 crossbred pigs were fed either a barley-based control diet or a similar diet supplemented with enzyme (Aspergillus niger; 750 units g−1 beta-glucanase and 650 units g−1 pentosanase), salinomycin (25 ppm) or both additives in combination. For exp. 2, two replicates of 48 pigs were fed either a barley-based diet, an unsupplemented rye-based diet or a rye-based diet supplemented with enzyme, salinomycin or both additives. During both experiments, chromic oxide (0.5%) was added to the diet of four to six pigs/treatment to act as a digestibility indicator starting when the pigs reached 42 kg. Neither enzyme nor salinomycin, alone or in combination, significantly improved the growth rate or feed efficiency of pigs fed barley or rye. Supplementation of barley with the combination of additives significantly (P < 0.05) improved protein digestibility while neither enzyme nor salinomycin had any effect on nutrient digestibility when fed alone. In rye-based diets, salinomycin, both alone and in combination, significantly (P < 0.05) improved the digestibility of crude protein and energy. Dry matter digestibility of the rye-based diets was unaffected by treatment. Key words: Swine, rye, barley, beta-glucanase, pentosanase, salinomycin

The objective of this study was to evaluate nutritional and energetic value of rice by-products, with or without phytase, using growing pigs. Thirty-six male pigs were housed in individual metabolic cages. Total collection of feces and urine was carried out in two periods of ten days: five days for adaptation and five days for collection. A randomized blocks design was used, considering the sampling period as a block, with five treatments and seven replicates. Two control diets (with and without phytase - Phy) were used in the digestibility calculations, the latter in order to evaluate the enzyme influence on energy digestibility of the tested ingredients. The control diet was replaced by 30% of one of the ingredients: defatted rice bran (DRB) with and without Phy and dephytinised defatted rice bran (DDRB). The use of Phy in the control diet did not influence DRB+Phy energy digestibility. Relative to DRB+Phy, dephytinised defatted rice bran had higher contents of ME and digestible protein but lower digestible P and Ca. Phy supplementation increased Ca and P utilization of DRB and improved energy and protein digestibility. The DRB without Phy showed the lowest digestibility coefficients for all responses. Metabolizable energy, digestible protein, phosphorus and calcium of DRB, DRB+Phy and DDRB were respectively, 2140, 2288 and 2519kcal kg-1; 79.25, 92.41 and 107.10g kg-1; 1.62, 3.41, and 2.11g kg-1 and 2.80, 3.79 and 2.90g kg-1.

SUMMARYSoya-bean meal and rapeseed meal treated with 0, 0·4 or 0·8 g formaldehyde/100 g crude protein (N × 6·25) was incubated in the rumen in nylon bags with 10 and 40 μm aperture.Disappearance of dry matter and nitrogenous compounds was reduced with increasing formaldehyde treatment.The proportion of acid-pepsin soluble nitrogen in the undegraded residues of untreated and treated soya-bean meal was similar to the original samples. For rapeseed meal the proportion of acid-pepsin soluble nitrogen in the undegraded residues decreased with increasing rumen incubation time. This reduction decreased with increasing formaldehyde treatment.Concentration of amino acids in the undegraded residues did not generally deviate from those in the original samples. However, a distinguishable decrease in the methionine concentration was observed in all the rapeseed meal samples and in glutamic acid concentration in rapeseed meal treated with 0 and 0·4 g formaldehyde/100g- crude protein.Most of the changes due to rumen incubation were smaller using the 10 μm bags than using the 40 μm bags. However, the bag pore size did not play a decisive role in the conclusions of the results given.

In two digestibility and balance trials with growing pigs, whey protein concentrate (WPC) was compared as a protein supplement with casein (CAS) and dried skim milk (DSM), and, 30 % lactose (40 % dried whey, DW) was compared as a sugar supplement with the same amounts of hydrolysed lactose (HYLA) and sucrose (SUC). The effects of these supplements on protein and mineral metabolism of the pigs were investigated, WPC contained 42.2 % crude protein and had a high content of lysine, 8.6 g, and sulphur containing amino acids: cystine 2.8 and methionine 2.2g/16 g N, These exceeded the values for DSM. The hydrolysing degree of the enzymatically treated lactose syrup was 73 %. WPC had high crude protein digestibility, 99.1 % as compared to 95.4 for CAS and 95.0 % for DSM. Dried whey had low crude protein digestibility, 72.5 %. The amino acids in the WPC diet were highly digestible, but low values were obtained for the DW diet. On the WPC diet, nitrogen retention was higher than with the other protein supplements (P > 0.05), urinary urea excretion was low and the biological value very high. On a combination of WPC and HYLA protein utilisation was higher than on dried whole whey. On the diets supplemented with different sugars, none of the blood parameters differed statistically significantly (P > 0.05) and all values lay within the reference range. Water intake was on average 49 % greater on diets with sugar supplements than without. Urinary excretion of reducing sugars averaged 40.2, 8.3 and 6.6 g/d on the HYLA, SUC and DW diets, while on the diets without sugar supplements the values were 0.8—1.2 g/d. The following mean daily mineral retention values were obtained: P 4.0 g, Ca 5,9 g. Mg 0,4 g, Na 1.9g, K 2.9 g, Fe 27 mg, Cu 6.4 mg, Zn 65 mg and Mn 4.0 mg. The surplus Na and K on the DW diet were excreted in the urine and the pigs did not have diarrhoea.

Productivity of bulb onions (Allium cepa L.) is largely constrained by postharvest losses. There are several postharvest strategies applicable to onions, but they are mostly applied singularly and therefore their combined effects have not been well studied. This study was set out to evaluate the effects of harvesting stage, curing period, and time of topping on postharvest quality of stored red bulb onions. The study was carried out in Yatta Subcounty, Machakos County, Kenya. The experimental design was split-split plot laid out in a 3 × 3 × 2 factorial arrangement. The treatments consisted of harvesting stage (25%, 50%, and 75% top fall), curing period (none, 1 week, and 2 weeks after harvesting), and time of topping (before and after curing). All the treatments were replicated three times. After 3 months of storage, the bulbs were analyzed for proximate and nutritional composition. Bulbs that were harvested at 75% top fall and cured for one or two weeks before topping retained higher moisture content, bulb weight, crude protein, vitamin C, zinc, potassium, calcium, and iron but lower sodium content after three-month storage. These practices are therefore recommended for maintaining the nutritional quality of bulb onions after harvesting.

The objective of the experiment was to evaluate the effect of the feeding of 80 g/kg (R8) and 100 g/kg (R10) of untreated rapeseed (RS) on egg quality including sensory quality in comparison with a control diet without rapeseed (R0). The addition of iodine (I) was also evaluated (1 mg/kg (R10) vs. 3 mg/kg (R10+I)). “Double zero” RS was used. The contents of energy and crude protein were almost the same in the diets. Laying hybrid ISABROWN was used in the experiment. The quality of eggs was analyzed 11 times every 28 days, from 19 to 64 weeks of age. 30 eggs per each group were always analyzed. Boiled eggs were assessed twice around the peak of egg production. Egg weight decreased (<I>P</I> < 0.001) with the increased level of RS (62.9 g, 61.8 g and 60.7 g, respectively). A reduction in egg weight in R8 and R10 diets resulted in the lower weight of albumen and eggshells. The addition of I to R10 diet increased (<I>P</I> < 0.001) egg weight (62.1 g vs. 60.7 g). The yolk proportion in egg weight was the highest (26.0%, <I>P</I> < 0.001) and the albumen weight ratio was the lowest (64.2%, <I>P</I> < 0.001) in group R8. Iodine supplementation improved (<I>P</I> < 0.001) yolk weight (15.7 g vs. 15.3 g). The proportion of RS in the diet did not affect the eggshell strength. An increase in the level of I improved (<I>P</I> < 0.001) eggshell quality (strength 36.1 N vs. 34.0 N and thickness 0.386 mm vs. 0.363 mm). Taste and overall acceptability were lower (<I>P</I> < 0.05) in eggs of hens fed RS. The addition of I did not affect flavour, odour, taste or overall acceptability.

Abstract Four cultivars of peanuts (Florigiant, Florunner, Starr and Tamnut) grown at two locations (Lewiston, North Carolina (NC) and Stephenville, Texas (TX)) in the National Regional Variety Trials were evaluated for protein nutritional quality. Peanuts, blanched with a minimum of heat treatment and partially defatted on a Carver press, were extracted with hexane at room temperature. Rats were fed these peanut meals to provide 10% of dietary protein (N × 6.25). PER was calculated as the ratio of weight gained to protein consumed for the 28-day feeding period. Adjusted PER values of the 8 peanut meals ranged from 1.3 to 1.7 compared to a value of 2.5 for the casein control diet. No statistically significant differences existed in PER among the 4 cultivars grown in NC. Florunner and Tamnut produced in TX had lower PER values than Florigiant and Starr grown at the same location. Florigiant, Florunner, and Tamnut grown in NC had lower PER values than the same varieties from TX. Rats were fed diets with Florunner peanut meal supplemented with methionine, lysine, and threonine, singly and in all combinations, for 7-day periods. Differences in protein quality between NC and TX-produced peanuts were overcome by addition of methionine to the diets. When all three amino acids were added, peanut meal from both locations supported growth of young rats equal to that of casein.

Five lots of fine rapeseed screenings were obtained from crushing plants, extracted in a pilot crushing plant, subjected to botanical analysis, and assayed for mycotoxins, protein, ether extract, ash, crude fibre, sand, amino acids, combustible energy and glucosinolates. Each screenings meal was substituted for 4, 8 and 12% of clean Tower rapeseed meal, incorporated into diets, pelleted and fed to swine over a weight range of 23–88 kg. The main finding in the feeding trial was a decline in efficiency of feed utilization as the level of screenings increased. Digestibility trials were conducted on the 12% screenings diets. Two of the screenings lots depressed protein digestibility from 78 to 73% and four of the screenings samples depressed energy digestibility. The lysine content of screenings tended to be lower than for Tower rapeseed meal and this, together with the lower protein digestibility, suggests that available lysine might be adversely affected by the inclusion of screenings in rapeseed meal. It therefore is nutritionally advantageous to ensure that rapeseed is relatively free of foreign matter prior to crushing.

SUMMARYA by-product of the distilling industry designated ‘distillers’ grains plus solubles' was evaluated using forty-eight growing pigs. The product was included at 0, 14·7 and 25% in three diets in which the proportion of other constituents was adjusted to give similar concentrations of TDN, dry matter and crude protein.The performance and carcass quality of pigs receiving 0% and 14·7% of the by-product in the diet was similar, but inclusion at 25% significantly reduced growth rate (g/day) from 632 for the 0% diet to 578.
