Genotypic and environmental differences in rye fed to broiler chicks with dietary pentosanase supplementation

The response of broiler chicks fed rye with dietary pentosanase supplementation was examined with respect to rye variety, area of production, and maturity at harvest. There were significant differences among varieties in the absence of enzyme addition and significant differences (variety × enzyme, P < 0.01) in the magnitude of the chick growth response to dietary pentosanase (exp. 1). Kodiak and Cougar rye gave greater enzyme-induced growth response than did Gazelle rye, with Musketeer rye and an unknown sample displaying intermediate values. Experiment 2 gave similar results; both Kodiak and Cougar rye in chick diets gave a larger response to dietary pentosanase than did Musketeer rye (P > 0.05). Determination of soluble carbohydrates, as well as extract viscosity, indicated that Kodiak rye had higher extract viscosity, higher extractable pentosan content, and a lower arabinose-to-xylose ratio; however, these results were not consistent with Cougar rye. Differing production location of a single variety (Musketeer, exp. 3) or maturity at harvest (exp. 4) indicated no significant effect on the nutritive value of rye attributable to location or maturity with or without enzyme supplementation, nor was there an effect on the magnitude of enzyme response. In rye harvested at different stages of maturity there was, however, a nonsignificant linear depression in chick growth with rye harvested at higher moisture levels. Two experiments were conducted to investigate the nutritive value of sausage casings prepared from cattle hides as a protein source for day-old hybrid (Hubbard × Hubbard) broiler chickens. The results demonstrate that sausage casings are an available protein source for broiler chicks that can be substituted for soybean meal at levels up to 8% of the feed without affecting average daily gain and feed efficiency. To find out the ability of Orobanche seeds to germinate immediately after seed set, seeds were germinated periodically at an interval of three months for one year in GR24. Some Orobanche seeds were capable of germination immediately after seed set but most required about nine months as after ripening or incubation period to be able to germinate. The phenomenon of after ripening in Orobanche seeds could be taken as an ecological measure to dormant over following unfavorable wet summer season. The growth hormone studies on Orobanche seed germination have shown that GA3 at a concentration of 100 ppm substantially enhanced seed germination when applied during pre-conditioning period. NAA showed some stimulatory effect at 0.5 - 1.0 ppm when applied during post-conditioning period but the hormone if applied during pre-conditioning period inhibited the germination. An experiment was conducted with 3840 male Ross × Arbor Acres broiler chicks to test the effects of increasing dietary methionine and lysine on performance and breast meat yield. Supplemental methionine and lysine were fed in a 2 × 4 factorial arrangement in both starter (0–3 wk) and finisher (3–6 wk) diets. Methionine was fed at levels of NRC and 112% NRC. Lysine was fed at levels of NRC and 106% NRC, 112% NRC and 118% NRC. Increasing dietary methionine increased weight gain (P < 0.01), feed efficiency (P < 0.01) from 3 to 6 wk, and breast meat yield (P < 0.01) at 6 wk. Increasing dietary lysine caused a curvilinear response in breast meat yield (P < 0.05). Key words: Broiler, lysine, methionine, breast meat

Determination of oxalate-extractable Si and Al is useful in assessing the degree of accumulation of allophane-like materials in Podzolic soils. Three procedures were tested for determining Si: manual spectrophotometry, automated spectrophotometry and atomic absorption. For concentrations of oxalate-extractable Si above 0.5 g kg−1, there was no significant difference among results by the three procedures. For lower concentrations of Si, results by atomic absorption were higher than those by the spectrophotometric procedures. Determination by Si by autoanalyzer is the preferred procedure as it is convenient, sensitive and reliable. Key words: Oxalate Si, Podzolic soil, autoanalyzer
