Comparisons were made to determine the cross-pollination potential of four strawberry cultivars. The weight per fertilized ovule of self-pollinated strawberries was compared to that from cross-pollination. Results indicated in 1986–1987 that the weight of strawberries was influenced by cross pollination. In 1986, the primary strawberries obtained by the crossing of Bounty × Glooscap had an average achene weight superior to that of the control. We also noticed the same observation for the secondary strawberries by the crossing of Honeoye × Bounty in 1986 and Redcoat × Honeoye in 1987.Key words: Strawberry, cross pollination, production, xenia

Pollen Powder or Sari : Aspects of Morphology, Systematics and Application on Menthol Family Plant          Pollen is the important component of plant to develop through reproductive. Pollen is the male organ of plants that plays an important role in the process of the evolution of plants. Menthol family plants (the Family Lamiaceae) is one of biggest families after Asteraceae. The process of the cross breeding often dominates the process of the evolution to the ment al Family. The research on the menthol Family's pollen aimed to know the affinity and the process of his pollination. The form of pollen of the Family Lamiaceae, was round and hexacolpate, the form was the same as the species member with their relatives. In the process of pollination often helped by the bee where pollen that clung to the abdomen part and the chest of the bee and moved to the other flower where the cross-pollination happen. The process of the cross-pollination happened also because of the same of maturity time between pollen of male and the stigma surface of female. The seed was still being the dominant factor in the reproductive in the Family Lamiaceae. Key words : Pollen, Pollination, Lamiaceae, the Mint family, the bee, the seed Abstrak          Serbuk sari atau dikenal dengan pollen merupakan komponen penting tanaman untuk berkembang melalui reproduktif.

Volatile compounds principally contribute to flavor of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa) fruit. Besides to genetics, cultivation conditions play an important role in fruit volatile formation. Compared to soil culture as control, effects of substrate culture on volatile compounds of two strawberry cultivars (‘Amaou’ and ‘Yuexin’) were investigated. GC-MS analysis revealed significant difference in volatile contents of ‘Amaou’ strawberry caused by substrate culture. No significant effect was observed for cultivar ‘Yuexin’. For ‘Amaou’ strawberry from soil culture produced higher volatile contents compared with substrate culture. This difference is contributed by high contents of esters, lactones, ketones, aldehydes, terpenes, hydrocarbons, acids, furans and phenols in ‘Amaou’ strawberry fruit from soil culture. Furanones, beta-linalool, trans-Nerolidol and esters are major contributor to strawberry aroma, whose contents are higher in soil culture planted fruit when compared to substrate culture. Moreover, strawberry fruit from soil culture had higher transcripts related to volatile biosynthesis were observed, including FaQR, FaOMT, FaNES1, FaSAAT and FaAAT2.

Sinclair, G., Charest, C., Dalpé, Y. and Khanizadeh, S. 2013. Influence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and a root endophyte on the biomass and root morphology of selected strawberry cultivars under salt conditions. Can. J. Plant Sci. 93: 997–999. The influence of four arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) (Glomus arenarium, G. caledonium, G. irregulare, and G. mosseae) and a root endophyte species (Piriformospora indica – Sebacinales) was investigated on four “day-neutral” strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa Duch.) cultivars (Albion, Charlotte, Mara des Bois, and Seascape) for their tolerance to salt stress. Fungal symbiosis tended to benefit strawberry plants in their tolerance to salinity, confirming the potential use of mycorrhizal biotechnology in horticulture in arid areas.

Kata kunci: lignosulfonat; bendalir/lumpur gerudi;ion stanum; tannin; prestasi reologi An improved drilling fluid thinner, tin–tannin–lignosulfonate (TTLS) complex; was formulated by imposing slight modifications to a commercially available thinner, lignosulfonate. The reactions involved include reaction of a lignosulfonate acid with tannin at 105°C in the presence of formaldehyde to initiate the cross-linking reaction. The mixture was further chelating with stannous ions. The modifications reactions were verified by an infrared (IR) spectroscopy analysis and its performances as a polymeric thinning agent for aqueous bentonite mud were evaluated. The rheological performances of the modified thinner were then compared with lignosulfonate. The modified thinner shows better thinning performance at higher temperature and indicates more tolerance to salt contamination compared to lignosulfonate. Key words: lignosulfonate; drilling fluid/mud; thinner; stannousion; tannin; rheological perfomances

Abstract Fourteen Japanese laboratories validated the reproducibility of genotyping by 25 cleavage amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) markers for discrimination of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch.) cultivars. Both the sensitivity and specificity rate of 12 markers were 100, those of another 12 were >95, and those of 1 were >90. These results indicate that the method of genotyping by the CAPS markers was highly reproducible and could provide a useful basis for practical identification of strawberry cultivars. This is the first report of the statistical validation of crop genotyping by DNA markers.
