This study focuses on the quality of the organic matter that reaches the sediment from Boa Viagem Beach and through the evaluation of the total bacterial count, the electron transport system activity (ETSA), the esterase activity (EST), as well as the protein and the organic matter contents. Seasonal variations of organic matter, protein content and the number of bacteria were particularly notable in the summer. ETSA reached a maximum of 7.48 µl O2 h-1 g-1 in the summer. EST activity presented a different pattern once it reached a maximum of 0.17 µg fluorescein h-1 g-1 in the winter. The temporal variation of ETSA and EST activity indicated that biopolymers predominated in the winter, and oligomers or monomers predominated in the summer. These results suggest that organic carbon turnover is more likely to be controlled by organic matter quality. The heavy metals concentrations, especially for Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr, indicated absence of the inhibition of dehydrogenase activity, and they are not bioavailable in the EC50 values

This paper reports the geochemical characteristics and environmental conditions of Cuchivero river sediments in Venezuela, depending on particle size, organic matter, organic carbon, nitrogen and total phosphorus, carbonates and heavy metals. The granulometry was typified by a predominance of sands with low organic matter (0.52 to 0.87%), organic carbon (0.06 to 0.09%) and carbonates content (0.54 to 2.61%) as well as high values of total nitrogen (602-985 mg / kg). The poor correlation between nitrogen, phosphorus and organic matter, suggests presence of nitrogen and total phosphorus of allochthonous origin and no Redfield organic matter. The average heavy metals in mg/kg, showed a descending concentration gradient, Fe (410)> Mn (63.14)> Zn (9.01)> Ni (3.38)> (2.21Cu)> Cr (2.09)> Co (1.13)> Cd (0.21) > Pb (0.07) mg / kg, with an association to the sands and carbonates, suggesting lithogenic origin. From the environmental point of view, there is no evidence of anthropogenic impact, as reflected by levels of organic matter and heavy metals which are below of the permissible values.

This study determined the changes in soil nutrients, organic carbon, organic matter and heavy metals during the early development stages of maize fertilized with different sources and doses. Also, this study confirmed that the used biosolid in the formulation of organomineral fertilizer makes greater efficacy than the effects promoted by mineral or filter cake organomineral fertilizers already used in agricultural. The experiment was done in a greenhouse at the Federal University of de Uberlândia - Campus Umuarama. The experimental design was randomized block design, as a 2 x 5 + 2 factorial, containing two sources of organomineral fertilizer consisting of organic residues (biosolid and filter cake), five doses of organomineral fertilizer (60, 80, 100, 120 and 140% of P2O5 recommendation for maize crop), a positive control with mineral fertilization (100%) and a negative one with no fertilization with four replications. The soil pH and contents of phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium base saturation, base sum, micronutrients, organic carbon, organic matter and heavy metals were determined subsequently after plant removal, 65 days after sowing. The organomineral fertilizers based on biosolid and filter cake yielded increases in phosphorus, boron and manganese in the soil, especially the biosolid source. Regardless of the fertilizer organic matter source, soil phosphorus increased linearly with increasing doses of the sources. Doses equal or below the recommendation for maize (100% P2O5) were less effective in supplying potassium. The organomineral sources did not add heavy metals to the soil. Fertilizers based on biosolid can supply nutrients, such as phosphorus, boron and manganese at high doses, replacing mineral fertilization, while maintaining and improving soil fertility with no contamination by heavy metals.

The research aimed to investigate the bioremediation of spent engine oil on selected contaminated soils within Ilorin metropolis. To achieve this, soil samples were collected from three (3) mechanic workshops along Taiwo axis within the metropolis. The soil samples were then subjected to bioremediation using the land-farming approach. The physicochemical parameters of the soil samples before and after bioremediation were analyzed using standard methods. Bacteria were isolated using standard procedures and identified using biochemical tests and molecular methods. Results for the physicochemical parameters of the soil samples before bioremediation include particle size (all sandy in nature); pH (6.00 ± 0.14 - 6.20 ± 0.14); Organic carbon (14.65 ± 3.20 - 17.54 ± 1.87), Organic matter (33.50 ± 0.85 - 43.45 ± 9.12) and heavy metals (ND - 11.74 ± 0.07). Values after bioremediation for pH, organic carbon, organic matter and heavy metals were 8.25 ± 0.07 - 8.90 ± 0.14, 13.07 ± 0.05 - 13.25 ± 0.84, 37.25 ± 1.06 - 44.80 ± 1.13, ND - 9.40 ± 0.04 respectively. Values for bacterial count before and after bioremediation of the soil samples were 8.00  1.41 - 67.50 ± 2.12 x 105 CFU/mL and 6.50 ± 2.12 - 164.00 ± 11.31 x 105 CFU/mL respectively. Bacterial isolates were identified as Pseudomonas sp., Enterobacter sp., Acinetobacter sp., and Bacillus sp. while the hydrocarbon-utilizing bacteria were identified as Thalassospira mesophila strain JCM 18969; Pseudomonas fluorescens F113; Siccibacter turicensis LMG 23730; Pseudomonas Zeshuii strain KACC 15471; Pseudomonas stutzeri strain CGMCC 1.1803 and Marinobacter hydrocarbonoclasticus strain ATCC 49840. In conclusion, the bacteria isolates effectively bioremediated the spent engine oil contaminated soils with a reduction of hydrocarbon pollutants.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat pencemaran Pb dan Cd yang terjadi di perairan Teluk Semarang. Penelitian dilakukan di 2 (dua) stasiun penelitian berbeda yaitu perairan Tambak Lorok (stasiun I) dan perairan Mangunhardjo (stasiun II). Analisa kandungan logam berat pada sedimen dilakukan dengan menggunakan AAS. Perhitungan kandungan bahan organik dilakukan dengan metode Gravimetri. Perhitungan kandungan karbon organik dilakukan dengan mengonversi dari kandungan bahan organik. Karbon merupakan unsur yang dapat mengikat unsur-unsur lain di perairan. Proses identifikasi makrozoobentos dilakukan dengan metode check list. Rata-rata konsentrasi logam berat Pb dan Cd yang didapatkan di stasiun I sebesar 15,709 mg/kg dan <0,004 mg/kg, sedangkan rata-rata konsentrasi logam berat Pb dan Cd di stasiun II sebesar 12,283 mg/kg dan <0,004 mg/kg. Famili makrozoobentos tertinggi yang didapatkan pada kedua stasiun adalah famili Archidae dan Nereidae. Analisa makrozoobentos menghasilkan nilai keanekaragaman pada stasiun I sebesar 1.3008 dan pada stasiun II sebesar 1.00424; nilai keseragaman pada stasiun I sebesar 0.80823 dan pada stasiun II sebesar 0.9141; dan nilai dominasi pada stasiun I sebesar 0.32426 dan pada stasiun II 0.38776. Nilai korelasi antara logam berat dengan karbon organik sebesar 0,632, logam berat dengan kelimpahan makrozoobentos sebesar 0,591, dan karbon organik dengan kelimpahan makrozoobentos sebesar 0,496. Nilai korelasi tersebut menunjukkan bahwa adanya hubungan yang cukup kuat antar ketiga variabel tersebut. Nilai keseragaman makrozoobentos mendekati 1 yang menunjukkan spesies cukup beragam dan tidak terjadi dominasi di kedua stasiun. Nilai keanekaragaman makrozoobentos pada kedua stasiun berada pada nilai 1>a< 3 yang menunjukkan bahwa terjadi pencemaran sedang pada kedua perairan tersebut. This research supposed to know the level of Pb and Cd pollution that occurred in Semarang Bay waters. The research was conducted in 2 (two) different research stations that were in Tambak Lorok (station I) and Mangunhardjo (station II) waters. Analysis of heavy metals in organic contents used AAS. Calculated the organic matter contents used Gravimetri method. Calculated the organic carbon with covertion from organic matter contents. Carbon is an element that can bind other elements in the water. Macrozoobenthos identify processed used check list method. The average concentration of heavy metal of Pb and Cd from station I 15,709 mg/kg and <0,004 mg/kg, and average of heavy metal concentration of Pb and Cd from station II 12,283 mg/kg and <0,004 mg/kg. Macrozoobentos analysis resulted value of diversity in station I was 1.3008 and in station II was 1.00424; uniformity value in station I was 0.80823 and value from station II was 0.9141;  and dominance value from ststion I was 0.32436 and value of dominance from station II was 0.38776. Correlation value between heavy metal and organic carbon is 0,632, heavy metal and macrozoobenthos abundance is 0,591, and organic carbon and macrozoobenthos abundance is 0,496. Those correlation value indicated that there is a relation between the three variables. Uniformity value approached to one (1) that means existence of species good enough diverse and that mean there was no domination in those two (2) stations, and macrozoobenthos diversity’s value in the two (2) stations was 1> a <3 that mean there was indicated moderate pollution in both of research station.

Composting is one of the solid waste management (SWM) methods where the organic component decomposed biologically under controlled conditions. In this study, a 0.166 m3 bioreactor tank was designed to compose 59.2Kg of simulated common municipal solid food waste having a bulk density, organic matter, organic carbon, pH, nitrogen content, C/N and nitrification index (NH4-N/ NO3-N) of 536.62 kg/m3, 62.34%, 34.76%, 6.53, 1.86%, 23 and 0.34 respectively. The bioreactor operated aerobically for 30 days, and anaerobically for 70 days, until the end of the composting process. Results proved that the composting process could reduce the mass of the waste by 69%.  Nitrogen content, C/N, nitrification index, NPK, and germination index (GI) were found to be 1.52%, 14.54, 0.31, 1.52%, 1.53%,0.85 % and 85.5% indicating that the obtained compost is stable and mature according to the standards. Twelve heavy metals of Zinc (Zn), Cupper (Cu), Molybdenum (Mo), Zirconium (Zr), Strontium (Sr), Rubidium (Rb), Manganese (Mn), Scandium (Sc), Iron (Fe), Titanium (Ti), Calcium (Ca) and Potassium (K) were detected by using Niton (XRF) device. Results of Cu and Zn were within the limits of the standards, while the rest were considered acceptable as standards did not restrict them.

Heavy metals and soil physicochemical parameters were identified as environmental pollutants in some major domestic dumpsites in Akure city of Ondo state. The pH of the domestic dumpsites ranged from 7.07 to 7.69 with a mean value of 7.33. the organic carbon for the domestic dumpsites ranged from 0.46% to 1.18%, while the organic matter was between 0.80% and 2.05%. the concentration of Zn, Fe, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni and Cr in µg/g in the domestic dumpsites A and B ranged between 360.00-441, 169.60-547.20, 37.20-102.00, 18.8080.00, 2.36-2.95, 11.00-19.20 and 18.00- 42.20 all in µg/g respectively. Also, the contamination pollution index of Zn, Fe, Cu, Pb, Cd, Ni and Cr all in the domestic dumpsites A and B ranged between 2.57-3.15, not detected, 1.03-2.83, 0.32-0.94, 2.95-3.68, 0.31-0.55 and 0.18-0.46 respectively. Pearson correlation indicated that Zn, Fe, Ni and Pb were highly significant (p<0.01).

This chapter considers the aftermath of the great oxidation event (GOE). It suggests that there was a substantial rise in oxygen defining the GOE, which may, in turn have led to the Lomagundi isotope excursion, which was associated with high rates of organic matter burial and perhaps even higher concentrations of oxygen. This excursion was soon followed by a crash in oxygen to very low levels and a return to banded iron formation deposition. When the massive amounts of organic carbon buried during the excursion were brought into the weathering environment, they would have represented a huge oxygen sink, drawing down levels of atmospheric oxygen. There appeared to be a veritable seesaw in oxygen concentrations, apparently triggered initially by the GOE. The GOE did not produce enough oxygen to oxygenate the oceans. Dissolved iron was removed from the oceans not by reaction with oxygen but rather by reaction with sulfide. Thus, the deep oceans remained anoxic and became rich in sulfide, instead of becoming well oxygenated.

The impact of the urban effluents of Mytilene (Lesvos island, Greece) on the receiving coastal marine environment, was evaluated by studying the quality of the city effluents (BOD5, COD, SS, heavy metals) and the marine sediments (grain size, organic matter, heavy metals). It was found that the urban effluents of Mytilene contain high organic matter and suspended particle load because of septage discharge into the sewerage network. Furthermore, although the city does not host important industrial activity, its effluents contain appreciable metal load, which is mainly associated with the particulate phase. The city effluents are discharged into the coastal marine environment and their colloidal and particulate matter after flocculation settles to the bottom, where is incorporated into the sediments. Over the years, the accumulation of organic matter and metals into the harbour mud has created a non-point pollution source in the relatively non-polluted coastal marine environment of the island. Copper and Zn were the metals which presented the higher enrichment in the sediments of the inner harbour of Mytilene.
