Design and Analysis of Foldable Vehicle using Finite Element Simulation

Present work deals with evaluation of stress, deflection and dynamic properties of the folded vehicle structure. The folded vehicle in present case is a single seat vehicle intended to carry one person. Design constraints are the folded dimensions of the vehicle and the maximum vehicle speed is limited to 15m/s. Using classical calculations dimensions of the vehicle are devised. Different materials are used for seat, telescopic support and chassis of the foldable vehicle. computer aided model is prepared using CATIA software. Finite element analysis of the foldable vehicle has been carried out to evaluate the static and dynamic stresses induced in the vehicle components. Meshing of the foldable vehicle is carried using Ansys Workbench. From modal analysis six mode shapes of the foldable vehicle are formulated, corresponding frequencies and deflections are devised. Mesh generator is used to mesh the foldable vehicle. The deflection and frequency magnitudes of foldable vehicle evaluated are in good agreement with the experimental results available in literature for similar materials.

Machining of metals make use of thermal mechanical FEM model. Analysis of nonlinear elastoplastic finite element simulation of milling of 45 # steel material use software of ABAQUS that is finite element simulation technology. ABAQUS software could be carried out on prediction of the milling force. Through finite element analysis, distribution of stress field of workpiece and tool is obtained under the influence of thermal mechanical. The prediction accuracy of the model was validated experimentally and the obtained numerical and experimental results were found in good agreement.

In this paper, the finite element model for the cabinet of a drum washing machine and the model for testing vibration of the cabinet were developed in ANSYS software and PULSE™, respectively. A series of tests were conducted. The natural frequencies and mode shapes were obtained by finite element analysis and modal experiment, which revealed weak parts of the cabinet. Meanwhile, the computational modes were in good agreement with experimental ones and this could provide an available method by which it was convenient to improve the design of the cabinet.

Some types of rigid origami possess specific geometric properties. They have a single degree of freedom, and can experience large configuration changes without cut or being stretched. This study presents a numerical analysis and finite element simulation on the folding behavior of deployable origami structures. Equivalent pin-jointed structures were established, and a Jacobian matrix was formed to constrain the internal mechanisms in each rigid plane. A nonlinear iterative algorithm was formulated for predicting the folding behavior. The augmented compatibility matrix was updated at each step for correcting the incompatible strains. Subsequently, finite element simulations on the deployable origami structures were carried out. Specifically, two types of generalized deployable origami structures combined by basic parts were studied, with some key parameters considered. It is concluded that, compared with the theoretical values, both the solutions obtained by the nonlinear algorithm and finite element analysis are in good agreement, the proposed method can well predict the folding behavior of the origami structures, and the error of the numerical results increases with the increase of the primary angle.

Present work deals with evaluation of dynamic characteristics of a bus body structure. The bus under consideration is a sleeper non-air conditioned vehicle for a passenger capacity of thirty and it is designed adhering to automotive industry standards. Modal analysis of the proposed bus design is carried using Ansys Workbench. With the aid of modal analysis ten mode shapes of the bus are postulated, corresponding frequencies and deflections are estimated. Mesh generator is used to mesh the complex bus model. The deflection and frequency magnitudes of proposed bus model is found with the help of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) technique and they are in good agreement with experimental results available in literature. Engine being the prime source of excitation, it’s frequency is compared with the frequencies determined by FEA of the proposed bus body and it is observed that the frequencies of the bus body for ten different modes are far less than the minimum resonant engine frequency.

This paper proposes a computation method using the equivalent magnetic circuit to analyze the driving force for the non-contact permanent magnet linear drive system. In this device, the magnetic driving force is related to the rotation angle of driving wheels. The relationship is verified by finite element analysis and measuring experiments. The result of finite element simulation is in good agreement with the model established by the equivalent magnetic circuit. Then experiments of displacement control are carried out to test the dynamic characteristic of this system. The controller of the system adopts the combination control of displacement and angle. The results indicate that the system has good performance in steady-state error and response speed, while the maximum overshoot needs to be reduced.

The aim of this paper is to design and fabricate a star die and a cylindrical die to produce a star shape by redrawing the cylindrical shape and comparing it to the conventional method of producing a star cup drawn from the circular blank sheet using experimental (EXP) and finite element simulation (FES). The redrawing and drawing process was done to produce a star cup with the dimension of (41.5 × 34.69mm), and (30 mm). The finite element model is performed via mechanical APDL ANSYS18.0 to modulate the redrawing and drawing operation. The results of finite element analysis were compared with the experimental results and it is found that the maximum punch force (39.12KN) recorded with the production of a star shape drawn from the circular blank sheet when comparing the punch force (32.33 KN) recorded when redrawing the cylindrical shape into a star shape. This is due to the exposure of the cup produced drawn from the blank to the highest tensile stress. The highest value of the effective stress (709MPa) and effective strain (0.751) recorded with the star shape drawn from a circular blank sheet. The maximum value of lamination (8.707%) is recorded at the cup curling (the concave area) with the first method compared to the maximum value of lamination (5.822%) recorded at the cup curling (the concave area) with the second method because of this exposure to the highest concentration of stresses. This paper describes a methodology of design and analysis of viscoelastic seismic dampers by means of the time domain finite element analysis. The viscoelastic constitutive relation of material incorporating with the fractional calculus has been derived and the finite element formulation based on the constitutive relation has been developed to analyze the dynamic property of seismic damper. A time domain computer program was developed by using the formulation. Dynamic properties of hysteresis loop, damping capacity, equivalent viscous damping coefficient, and equivalent spring constant are calculated and compared with the experimental results. Remarkable correlation between the FE analysis and the experiment is gained, and consequently the design procedure with the help of the FE analysis has been established.

Finite element simulation of stable fatigue crack growth using critical crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) was done. In the preliminary finite element simulation without crack growth, the critical CTOD was determined by monitoring the ratio between the displacement increments at the nodes above the crack tip and behind the crack tip in the neighborhood of the crack tip. The critical CTOD was determined as the vertical displacement at the node on the crack surface just behind the crack tip at the maximum ratio. In the main finite element simulation with crack growth, the crack growth rate with respect to the effective stress intensity factor range considering crack closure yielded more consistent result. The exponents m in the Paris law were determined.

This paper shows the finite element simulation of a representative specimen from the firewall section in the AEROMARMI ESTELA M1 aircraft. This specimen is manufactured in glass and carbon / epoxy laminates. The specimen is subjected to a load which direction and magnitude are determined by a previous dynamic loads study [10], taking into account the maximum load factor allowed by the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) for utilitarian aircrafts [11]. A representative specimen is manufactured with the same features of the firewall. Meanwhile a fix is built in order to introduce the load directions on the representative specimen. The relationship between load and displacement is plotted for this representative specimen, whence the maximum displacement at the specific load is obtained, afterwards it is compared with the finite element model, which is modified in its laminate thicknesses in order to decrease the deviation error; subsequently this features could be applied to perform the whole firewall analysis in a future model [10].
