Background: Indiscriminate disposal of hospital wastes including mercury/amalgam wastes pose a serious threat to life and environment. There is a growing concern about biomedical waste (BMW) management among health care workers, however there are limited reports on BMW management by dental personnel in developing countries. Objectives: This study investigated the level of knowledge of BMW, observance of proper mercury hygiene and BMW management practice among public dental personnel in Lagos State, Nigeria. Methods: A cross-sectional study regarding BMW management across public hospitals in Lagos State, Nigeria was con- ducted following institutional ethics committee approval. A self-administered questionnaire was utilized to obtain data from different facilities selected by purposive and simple random sampling techniques as applicable. The questionnaires were dis- tributed among 437 respondents by convenience sampling. The resulting data were statistically tested using Chi-square and G-test with p-value < 0.05 indicating significant level. Results: Amongst 437 respondents, majority were females (62.5%) and the highest proportion fell within the age range of 25–34 years (44.4%). Only 17.2% of the respondents had good knowledge of BMW management/legislation and 4.1% had good BMW practice. Less than half (49.4%) of respondents disposed mercury-contaminated materials inside the trash and majority (92.2%) did not observe proper mercury hygiene. Significantly better mercury hygiene practices were observed in secondary facilities (p=0.040). Conclusion: A minor proportion of public dental personnel had good knowledge and practice of proper mercury hygiene and BMW management. This shows there is an urgent need for training of health personnel on proper BMW handling and disposal in developing countries like Nigeria. Effective and efficient biomedical wastes management is vital in the health care delivery system, safe environment and public health could possibly be achieved through the standard practices of the biomedical waste procedures with safety measures in place. The study was aimed to evaluate the practices and the level of awareness of health workers towards biomedical waste management in selected hospitals in Abuja. Data were collected by structured questionnaire and on- the-spot observation. Three private and three public hospitals that provided health care services in Abuja were surveyed. Descriptive and inferential statistical analysis were used in the analysis of the data. Chi-square (χ2) test was used to determine the level of significance set at p<0.05. The male health workers were 220 (55.00%) and the female were 180 (45.00%) in the survey. The nurses were the highest number of respondents in the study with frequency percentage of 117(28.75%) followed by the laboratory scientists 96 (24.00%), Pharmacists 71 (17.75%, Doctors 64(16.00%) and other health care workers 54 (13.50%). The practices of handling biomedical waste among health workers was a significant factor of biomedical waste management (p<0.05). The awareness on safety measures among health workers was a significant factor of biomedical waste management (p<0.05). Improvement in the aspects of training retraining of health workers will go a long way to fill the lapses in the biomedical waste’s management practices. Government should establish policies and laws to enforce strict compliance in accordance with WHO stipulations.

Introduction Inadequate biomedical waste management not only poses significant risk of infection due to pathogens such as HIV and Hepatitis B and C virus but also carries the risk of water, air, and soil pollution thereby adversely affecting the environment and community at large. Therefore, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare commissioned implementation of an Infection Management and Environment Plan (IMEP) in health-care facilities. Hence, this study is undertaken to assess the knowledge, attitude, practice, and gaps in implementing the biomedical waste management practices at the primary health-care facilities. Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the Primary Health Centers of Hassan District. Details of knowledge, attitude, and practice of biomedical waste management were collected through observation, staff interview, and record review on the predesigned questionnaire. A score of 0, 1, and 2 was given for noncompliant (0), partially compliant (1), and fully compliant (2), respectively, based on the compliance. A scoring system was devised to evaluate the effectiveness of training as good, average, and poor. A score of >70 was considered as good, 50 to 70 as average, and <50 as poor. Results The mean efficacy score was 63; knowledge was good with a score of 74, attitude was average with a score of 63, and practice was also average with a score of 54. Conclusion There is a need for retraining of all the staff and strict supportive supervision by the district health authorities to ease the implementation requirements.

Improper waste management practices are a serious problem that involves not only the hospital staff but society at large. To improve biomedical waste (BMW) management, it is important to evaluate the current practices in BMW management (BMWM), identify the gaps, and address them. With this backdrop, this research was done to assess the awareness of BMW management practices among the healthcare professionals in a teaching hospital. This is a hospital-based observational study with assessment of 112 doctors, 230 nurses, and 158 waste handlers. The healthcare workers (HCW) were evaluated regarding awareness, and different practices of BMWM with a self-structured questionnaire. An overall score of ≥50% in each section was considered satisfactory regarding awareness and practices for BMWM. Data were analyzed statistically using SPSS Ver.21 software. Regarding the awareness on various aspects of BMWM, doctors had maximum level of awareness at 68.6% (60.0% – 77.2%), followed by nurses at 69.3% (63.3%-75.3%) and waste handlers at 55.9% (48.2% – 63.6%). Overall nurses showed maximum awareness of existing practices at 74.0% followed by doctors at 70.2% and waste handlers were at 53.8%. To optimize BMWM, it is important to raise awareness on best practices while evaluating the current practices. Gaps in knowledge and skills need to be identified and closed. Ongoing information, education and communication for health care professionals are pivotal in improving BMWM practices.

Abstract Background Managerial commitment is important for effective design and implementation of citizen charter to assure the quality of health service delivery as per the standards depicted in the document. Hence the objective of this study is to assess the level of managerial commitment towards implementation of the citizen charter standards and associated factor in Jimma zone public hospitals. Methods A Facility based cross-sectional study design was employed in Jimma zone public hospitals from March 14 to May 16, 2019 and 422 health managers who were currently working at all levels of management were participated in the study. After checking its completeness, the data was entered into EPI data version 3.1 and exported to SPSS version 20 for statistical analysis. Factor analysis was conducted. Simple and multiple linear regression were done using 95%CI and significance was declared at P < 0.05. All assumptions of linear regression and principal component analysis were checked. Results The percentages mean score of managerial commitment for health managers working in jimma zone public hospitals was 58%. Perceived value and care for managers (β = .329,95% CI,.245,.413, p-value<.001), Interaction between staff and managers’ (β = 0.077,95%CI,.032,.122, p-value< 001),involvement during implementation of citizen charter(β = 0.061,95%CI,.010,.112,p-value = 018) and positional level(β = − 122,95%CI,-.242,-.002,p-value = .046) as predictors of managerial commitment towards implementation of citizen charter standards. Conclusions In this study, the percentage mean score of managerial commitment for health care managers working in Jimma zone public hospitals was medium. Hence, all levels of managers to consider and maintain factors identified in this study in their management practice to foster a higher level of managerial commitment towards implementation of citizen charter standards in jimma zone public hospitals.

This paper examines the influence of population growth on waste generation in Lagos metropolis, African’s most populous urban conglomeration. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, the study analyses the pattern of household waste disposal, collection and transportation in Lagos State. It also examines the public-private partnership strategy adopted in waste management. The findings show that population growth significantly influences waste generation and management in Lagos metropolis. As the population increased, the volume of waste generated also increased in each LGA of Lagos State. The public-private partnership strategy has been effective in managing waste, but the Lagos State Waste Management Authority oversight was adjudged as less than satisfactory. The paper concludes that intervention is needed in terms of educating the growing population of the Lagos metropolis on the best waste management practices. It highlights the need for a more efficient and effective publicprivate partnership collaboration to solve this perennial social problem.

Medical waste management is of crucial importance in health care facilities (HCF). In the present study, we assessed the knowledge, attitude and practices of medical waste management in an HCF of Sulaimani city, Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Using a self-administered questionnaire, we collected information on waste management practices from health care professionals (HCP) in 14 public and private hospitals and 10 primary health care centers of the city. Based on answers, total knowledge score on a 10-point scale was established. A total of 406 HCPs (of those, 261 women), average age 37.3 (SD ± 9.4) years participated. Just 20.3% have been trained on medical waste management. The total knowledge score ranged from 0 to 9 with a mean of 4.7 (SD ± 1.8).  Factors which were significantly associated with the better knowledge score was male gender, having a high educational degree, being trained in waste management and has been in service for more than 5 years. 68% of HCPs followed the color coding system, 91% always/frequently disposed used sharps/needles to safety boxes, 79% always or frequently recapped needles, 49% reported experiencing at least one needle prick injury during their work but only 37% of them had reported the injury to a supervisor and only 4% of those injured had filled an injury form. There is a low average level of knowledge and the unsafe risky practices are quite prevalent in HCFs. Provision of appropriate training on dealing with medical waste is essential to promote safe practices among HCFs.
