The aim of this study was to investigate the hygiene performance of a camel (Camelus dromedarius) slaughtering process as carried out with the traditional method in the Sahrawi refugee camps located in southwestern Algeria. The camel slaughtering process in this region differs significantly from that carried out in commercial abattoirs. Slaughtering is performed outdoors in desert areas, and dehiding of the carcass is approached via the dorsoventral route rather than the classic ventrodorsal route. Samples were taken from 10 camel carcasses from three different areas: the hide, the carcass meat immediately after dehiding, and the meat after final cutting. Enterobacteriaceae counts (EC) were enumerated employing conventional laboratory techniques. Carcass meat samples resulted in EC below the detection limit more frequently if the hide samples from the same carcass had also EC counts below the detection limit. Because of the low number of trials, the calculation of statistical significance of the results was not possible. Further experimental research is needed in order to validate the results presented in this study. The comparison of the microbiological hygiene performance between dorsal dehiding and traditional ventral dehiding of slaughtered animals could serve to validate the hypothesis of the potential positive impact of the dorsal dehiding method in carcass meat hygiene.

Abstract Introduction Post-operative intra-abdominal adhesions remain the leading cause of small bowel obstruction (SBO) representing one of the main diagnoses warranting emergency laparotomies. The National Audit in Small Bowel Obstruction advocates the use of water-soluble contrast agents (WSCA) as initial management of SBO. We aim to assess the role and outcomes of WSCA and its rate in successfully managing SBO non-operatively. Method We conducted a 2-year retrospective analysis including all patients admitted with adhesive SBO. Outcomes of patients who received WSCA were compared to those who hadn’t. Results 118 patients were included, 27(23%) of which required immediate surgery while 91(77%) were initially managed conservatively. From the latter group, 53(58.2%) received WSCA whilst 38(41.8%) didn’t. Of the group that received WSCA, 36(39.5%) were successfully managed non-operatively, compared to 26(28.5%) that didn’t, this however lacked statistical significance. LOS didn’t differ between these two groups (5 days vs. 5.5 days, p = 0.805). 32% of the patients required eventual surgical intervention needing longer LOS regardless of receiving WSCA (6.6 days vs. 13.6 days p < 0.001). Conclusions Adhesive SBO can be managed conservatively in up to two-thirds of patients. WSCA usage has a positive impact but needs further assessment in larger studies.

Traditional method of buoy gauge design is rather complicated, so an advanced method by building and solving fluid mechanics equations is proposed in this paper. The curve of the taper pipe inner surface is calculated, according to different buoy gravity and diameter. In order to examine the effect of this improved method, an experiment is carried out. Results show that linear property of the buoy gauge improved by new method is excellent.

This article generalized modern tendencies and actual peculiarities of health care financing. The key aim of the research is to investigate the dynamics of health care financing as a factor of economic growth based on EU countries analysis. Systematization information sources connected with health care financing and its structure indicate that the EU countries analysis of dynamics of health care financing and its impact on economic growth was conducted fragmentary. This issue is still actual both for scholars and policymakers, especially for Ukraine, based on European trends. Investigation in the article is made according to the following stages: 1) introduction and relevance grounding; 2) literary review and identifying the necessity of research in this scientific area; 3) describing methodology, research methods, and current hypothesis; 4) characteristic of research results and confirming the hypothesis of the positive impact of the health care financing on economic growth; 5) making conclusions. Methodological tools of the research methods were structural and comparative analysis, logical generalization, and scientific abstraction. The methods of cross-country statistical and analytical analysis using the Excel 2010 software package for the sample from 14 EU countries for 2009-2018 (limited number of countries and limited data in 2018 relate to the data availability on open website of the EU statistical office) were applied to analyse the structure of health care financing, in particular financing schemes, main providers, and health care functions. The top countries in health care financing were identified. The methods of empirical analysis using the STATA software package for this data sample were used to confirm the hypothesis about the positive impact of the health care financing on economic growth – the GDP per capita. The nature of the analysed indices distribution was estimated based on results of Shapiro-Wilk test. So, Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficient was chosen. The statistical significance and strength of the relationship between the indicators of total expenditure for health care, and in particular government financing and compulsory contributory health care financing, voluntary health care financing, and household out-of-pocket payment for health care and the change of GDP per capita were assessed through a correlation analysis. The time lags of achievement the most statistical significance by this relationship was also identified. The results of the research show that the impact of health care financing on the change of economic growth is very high in 12 from 14 investigated EU countries (with lags of 1–3 years) and high in 2 from 14 countries (with a lag of 1 year). The character of this relationship for the most countries (9 from 14 countries) is direct (positive), and for 5 countries it is inverse (negative). The results of the research will be useful during future fundamental and practical research connected with health care financing and its modelling, for scholars and government officials to reform the health care system and its financial mechanism.

This chapter focuses on one particular aspect of education for refugee children, namely science education, in the various contexts these refugees encounter, especially when immersed in cultures away from their mother language and bridges with the family culture. The universal character of natural sciences makes is precious for these displaced children. Renovating science education has been the subject of international efforts and remarkable innovative pilot projects since two decades A number of such projects, in various developing or developed countries, are reported here, with the positive impact which was observed in multi-cultural contexts. Although none of these projects yet dealt with extreme situations such as refugee camps, the lessons learned suggest to act in this direction, using the pedagogical ressources now available in many languages, as well as a potential contribution of the scientific community.

Effect of magnetic field on seed germination and seedling growth of sunflowerThe impact of a variable magnetic field, magnetically treated water and a combination of both these factors on the germination of seeds and the final mass at the initial stage of growth sunflower plants was presented. Investigations were carried out in pots filled with sand, tin an air-conditioned plant house with no access to daylight using fluorescent light as illumination. A statistical significance positive impact was achieved for the samples subjected to the interaction of both stimulating factors simultaneously, the magnetic field and the impact of treated water several times on the speed of seed germination and final plant mass. Negative impacts were obtained for the majority of the test cases, for the magnetically treated water, the short duration of activity of the magnetic field and for the connection of the magnetic field and low-flow times.

Abstract Context The Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine (TUCOM-CA) is one of many colleges of osteopathic medicine with osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) predoctoral teaching fellowship programs. OMM fellows serve as near-peer teachers for preclinical osteopathic medical students (OMS) at TUCOM-CA, with the objectives of increasing student satisfaction with and understanding of the OMM curriculum. Our aim was to assess whether the TUCOM-CA fellowship program has achieved these objectives. Methods All osteopathic medical students at TUCOM-CA were sent an electronic survey. The survey items queried: frequency of and type of interaction; impact on satisfaction with and understanding of the OMM curriculum; impact on confidence in using osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT); valuation of OMT and intention to use OMT in future clinical practice. Frequencies, means and standard deviations were calculated, omitting “no basis for evaluation” responses. Two-tailed Z-tests of proportions were utilized for analysis of statistical significance, with significance set at 95% (P<.05 ). Results In total, 156 of 538 (29.0%) responses were received, and 150 had sufficient data to analyze. Respondents reported varied rates and modes of interaction with OMM fellows (OMM lab table-training [97.3%] to early clinical experiences [30.9%]). Response means for items regarding satisfaction with and understanding of the OMM curriculum fell between “strongly agree” and “agree” for all activities. Many respondents (82.5%–83.8%) reported that interaction with OMM fellows increased their confidence in using OMT. Additionally, respondents who were treated with OMT by OMM fellows reported significantly higher agreement with statements about clinical utility of OMT (Z=2.6, P<.05) and intention to use OMT in future practice (Z=2.3, P<.05). Conclusions The majority of osteopathic medical students at TUCOM-CA reported significant agreement with the positive impact of interaction with OMM fellows on satisfaction with and understanding of the OMM curriculum. This supports the conclusion that the OMM predoctoral teaching fellowship program achieves its objectives to increase student satisfaction with and understanding of the OMM curriculum. The survey data also showed significantly stronger agreement with statements supporting valuation of OMT in clinical practice and intention to use OMT in the future, among respondents treated with OMT by OMM fellows.

Purpose: The general objective of the study was to examine the effect of human capital management on employee performance at Co-operative Bank of Kenya.  The study was guided by three specific objectives namely; to analyze the effect of employee skills, employee perception and employee engagement on employee performance at Co-operative Bank of Kenya.  The study was anchored on theories of human capital and resource based view.Methodology: The study adopted a descriptive research design. This enabled the use of multiple methods for data collection and data analysis and purposive stratified random sampling technique was used with a target population of 198 employees and a sample size of 132. Primary data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire and analyzed quantitatively using descriptive and inferential statistics and presented using frequencies, percentages, tables and charts. Results: The study found out that human capital management has a strong influence on employee performance. The study therefore rejected the three null hypotheses and adopted the alternate hypothesis to indicate that there is statistical significance effect between the independent variables and the dependent variable. The findings revealed that employee skills have a statistical significant effect on employee performance. This was evident because the study found out that the bank develops its employees to take up more responsibilities and to improve on their performance.  The study also found out that the bank identifies the training needs of employees using a formal performance appraisal mechanism. The study also found out that employee perception also influence employee performance positively.  The study indicated that employees perceive that human capital management has a positive impact on skill development. The employees also perceive that they are recognized by the organization which has increased their self confidence ad as a result increased their performance. Employee engagement has also been proven to have a positive significant on employee performance. The employees feels that been engaged has increased their commitment. Engaging employees has helped the organization to achieve its objectives and goals. Contribution to theory, practice and policy: The study recommends that the organization should involve all the employees fully in decision making on decisions concerning development and conduct development on a yearly basis based on performance appraisal.

The current paper intends to describe the practice and analyze the results of using the website Write & Improve as an additional extra-class tool of developing writing skills in the course of preparation for the FCE exam for post-graduate students. The study has proven the hypothesis that the proposed algorithm for working with the service Write & Improve is effective for teaching FCE Writing for post-graduate students, and provided the experimental research of learners’ progress. Theoretical (analysis and synthesis), empirical (observation, testing, conducting pedagogical experiment) and statistical (calculating the Mean and the Standard Deviation) methods were used to achieve the stated aim. A significant difference was observed in the experimental group of 32 Kharkiv post-graduate university students where the experiment was carried out in 2017/2018 academic year. The obtained results of the experimental research demonstrate post-graduate students’ progress in the FCE Writing Test and can be regarded as the evidence that the service Write & Improve does have a positive impact on mastering post-graduate students’ writing skills. Furthermore, comparing the test results according to 5-band scale in four different criteria (Content, Communicative Achievement, Organization, Language) at the different stages of the course allowed to measure the development rate of the checked English writing skills. The resulting data confirmed the improvement in post-graduate students’ performance in all the criteria of Writing on average by 36.1%; the most significant progress has been in Language (vocabulary and grammar aspects) with the average increase from 3.0 to 4.5 scores (50 %) whereas the least advance to be claimed is in Communicative Achievement with the results ranging from 2.8 to 3.6 (28.6%); it proves the substantial increase. Provided that Write & Improve is implemented systematically with a careful consideration of post-graduate students’ problems and needs, the application of it can be said to have the obvious correlation with post-graduate students’ progress. The authors’ experience is significant in Ukrainian learning context as it proves the effectiveness of using innovative online instruments to teach English Writing to post-graduate students who aim to pass FCE exam.
