Sites at 244 locations along the west and north Norwegian coasts were investigated to evaluate whether kelp (Laminaria hyperborea) beds had been overgrazed by the sea urchins Strongylocentrotus droebachiensis and Echinus esculentus in the years 1981-1992. Barren ground communities were found in sheltered and moderately wave-exposed areas mainly in the inner and middle archipelago from Nordmøre (63°N) northwards. Densities of large-sized (adult and intermediate) L. hyperborea were 20.7 individuals ·m-2 in kelp beds and 9.7 individuals ·m-2 in transition areas. Juvenile Laminaria spp. were present at densities of 23.9 individuals ·m-2 in kelp beds, 3.6 individuals ·m-2 in transition areas, 0.0 individuals ·m-2 in barren grounds, and 59.1 individuals ·m-2 in kelp-harvested locations. Both the densities and the mean size of S. droebachiensis in barren grounds decreased northwards. The mean densities were 52.2 and 26.1 individuals ·m-2 for the areas south and north of the Arctic Circle, respectively. Multivariate analysis (CANOCO) showed that seven ``environmental'' factors (i.e., kelp depth gradient, distance (latitude), time of sampling, nematode infection in S. droebachiensis, wave exposure, coastal gradient, and substratum) contributed significantly to variability in the distribution of kelp beds and barren grounds. Species in hard-bottom communities in shallow waters could be divided into three distinct BIOTA.

With the more and more advancement in technology, internet has become the most important medium for all kinds of confidential as well as non-confidential communications. Security is the major issue for such communications and steganography is most widely accepted tool for information security. An effort has been made in the present paper to propose a secured model for communication using image steganography. It presents two components based LSB steganography method, adaptive LSB based steganography method for embedding data in high and low transition parts of an image respectively. Hybrid edge detection filter is proposed to divide an image in low and high transition areas. AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and Randomization is incorporated to provide two-tier security. Comparison analysis of output results with other existing techniques on basis of capacity, imperceptibility is giving the proposed approach an edge over others. The proposed approach has been thoroughly tested for various steganalysis attacks like visual analysis, histogram analysis, chi-square, and RS analysis and could sustain all these attacks very well.

Abstract Introduction: There is little literature on the subvalvular apparatus of the atrioventricular valves' of the heart. This investigation aimed to compare mammalian atrioventricular valve subvalvular apparatus; in particular the number and characteristics of true chordae tendineae (TChT) and their tissue transition areas - proximally with the valve leaflets, and distally with the papillary muscles. Materials and Methods: Sheep, pig and bovine fresh hearts were dissected (n = 9). The subvalvular apparatus of the mitral and tricuspid valves were visualised. Each TChT origin was grouped and counted according to papillary muscle and valve, and compared within and across the species. Appropriate statistical analyses were then applied to identify any correlations. Histological examination of the transition areas was also performed. Results: The tricuspid valve had significantly more TChT than the mitral (p = 0.04). On comparison of the TChT counts in both valves across the species, there were no signiicant differences. An unexpected inding was the abrupt transition from chordae collagen to papillary muscle. Conclusion: The tricuspid valve is under less pressure than the mitral but is connected to significantly more TChT. We have shown no significant difference between the numbers of TChT for each papillary muscle in either mitral or tricupsid valves across the species. Veterinary teaching emphasises that there is no clinically signiicant difference at a gross morphology level between these species. This is the irst study to report that there is also no signiicant difference at the subvalvular level, and this has direct translational relevance for bioprosthetic cardiac valve replacement.

The natural wetland areas in Vietnam, which are transition areas from inland and ocean, play a crucial role in minimizing coastal hazards; however, during the last two decades, about 64% of these areas have been converted from the natural wetland to the human-made wetland. It is anticipated that the conversion rate continues to increase due to economic development and urbanization. Therefore, monitoring and assessment of the wetland are essential for the coastal vulnerability assessment and geo-ecosystem management. The aim of this study is to propose and verify a new deep learning approach to interpret 9 of 19 coastal wetland types classified in the RAMSAR and MONRE systems for the Tien Yen estuary of Vietnam. Herein, a Resnet framework was integrated into the U-Net to optimize the performance of the proposed deep learning model. The Sentinel-2, ALOS-DEM, and NOAA-DEM satellite images were used as the input data, whereas the output is the predefined nine wetland types. As a result, two ResU-Net models using Adam and RMSprop optimizer functions show the accuracy higher than 85%, especially in forested intertidal wetlands, aquaculture ponds, and farm ponds. The better performance of these models was proved, compared to Random Forest and Support Vector Machine methods. After optimizing the ResU-Net models, they were also used to map the coastal wetland areas correctly in the northeastern part of Vietnam. The final model can potentially update new wetland types in the southern parts and islands in Vietnam towards wetland change monitoring in real time.

<p>There is mounting evidence that the extreme weather conditions, either droughts or floods, could likely be more frequent than what was thought before, resulting in increased impacts on our ecosystems. This study aims to investigate the effect of the extreme drought events that occurred in the period 2015-2019 on the nitrate-N concentrations and loads in the Bode catchment (3300 km2) located in the transition areas of central uplands and northern lowlands of Germany. To this, a combination of high-frequency (15 min data in the period 2011-2019) and long-term (1993-2010) of continuous discharge and biweekly nitrate-N records in five typical gauging stations, representing different landscape features and dominant-runoff components of the catchment, were utilized. In the period 2015-2019, mean annual precipitation decreased by about 10%, and mean temperature increased by 1.46 °C compared to the period 1969-2014. Results suggested no evident changes in nitrate-N concentrations and loads in the upper mountainous areas of the Bode catchment (mainly forest) and groundwater-dominated gauging station, reflecting no impact of the droughts on these two archetypical sub-catchments. However, results showed that the nitrate-N concentrations and loads declined significantly in the lowland, agriculture dominated areas of the Bode catchment. This can be explained by the reduction of nitrate-N contribution from the lower part of the catchment during the spring and summer periods. It seems that the drought-induced increased evapotranspiration and decreased precipitation resulted in the reduced runoff from lowland areas of the catchment, affecting the nitrate-N mixing of different N source areas within the catchment. These findings suggest that recent changes of temperature and precipitation unlikely change considerably nitrate-N dynamics in terms of yearly load, but significantly reduce nitrate-N concentrations during low-flow periods in summer.  </p>

In the Stockholm region there are around 90,000 households with single systems. These households cause larger phosphorus flows to the Baltic Sea than the 1.8 million people connected to four advanced large-scale treatment plants in the same region. According to city plans, some of these areas with on-site systems in transition to permanent living shall be connected to central systems. The problem is however that this sewer system will take decades to complete. It is also not ensured whether or not all peripheral areas with on-site systems could be connected to the central systems. To help support environmental decisions for the selection of wastewater systems for these areas, an Excel-based model has been developed where the cost for the systems can be assessed and evaluated in relation to their environmental impact. The model deals with two types of environmental issues: substance flow analysis and energy analysis. The cost part considers investigations, investments, design, operation, maintenance and supervision, and calculates total annual cost for the water and wastewater system per person.

Estonian conditional clauses have previously been divided into two clear-cut groups: real and unreal, with indicative and conditional main verbs of conditional clauses, respectively. This article defends the view that it is a question of the degree of hypotheticality that a sentence conveys, and it treats hypotheticality as a continuum that includes groups of linguistic forms, which have a relatively clear core and are separated by fuzzy transition areas. Secondly, the article concentrates on the relationship between Estonian conditional clauses and temporal clauses. As these clause types have the same marker (kui), the article discusses whether it is always possible to distinguish between these two clauses and which factors are relevant for determining whether the clause is a temporal or conditional one. Thirdly, the relationship between Estonian conditional and concessive clauses is under consideration, focusing particularly on Estonian scalar concessive conditional clauses.
