Science learning in elementary schools should more emphasis on process through practicum activities, currently science learning in the class is still limited to delivering theory and rarely invites students to do practicals because of the limitations of practicum tools owned by the school. Based on observations, this is also experienced by science teachers at SDN Pulo Panjang. Based on these problems, community service activities were carried out in the form of workshops and socialization of use science practicum tools, this activity consisted of two steps, e.g. preparation and implementation. At  preparation step, simple practicum tools are produced for science practicum, then these practicum tools are demonstrated at implementation step. At implementation step, the speaker explained and demonstrated several practicums related to electricity & magnetism and pressure materials. There are several things that participants gained after holding this workshop, e.g. 1) Knowledge, after the workshop it was seen that participants got new knowledge about implementation of elementary science practicum, 2) Skill, participants seemed to have tskills to carry out elementary science practicum activities, and 3) Products, after the workshop, science practicum tools will be given to the school, science practicum tools provided are equipped with guides/modules

School science aspires for students to develop conceptual, procedural and nature of science understandings as well as developing scientific literacy. Issues and complexities surrounding the development of science curriculum for Indigenous schools in New Zealand is a concern as little is known about these aspects of science learning in wharekura (Māori Indigenous School). This paper draws upon the findings of an empirical study to address the call for research into effective practices for supporting Indigenous students in learning science. The study is part of a larger project investigating and extending our understanding about how New Zealand teachers’ conceptualise science and science inquiry (investigation). Two Māori teachers participated in the research as well as their class who were supported by two researchers. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with teachers. This research reports the findings of how participating teachers’ conceptualise science inquiry and describes their perceptions of how and why their students should learn science and science inquiry. The paper also presents teachers’ views about their own development as science teachers and suggests two models to address the issue of science teaching in wharekura.

Abstract: Constructivism in Science Learning in Elementary Schools: Epistemological and Ontological Perspectives and Doubts in the Praxis. A constructivist perspective focuses on children’s contribution to the construction of knowledge. Constructivism believes that a child is a real inquirer and discoverer who is actively engaged in building theories about the world and the way it works without the aid of direct instructions. The implication is that teachers have to give wider mandates to students, to provide them with contexts for experimentation to occur, and to facilitate theory building by providing helpful experiences. Epistemologically and ontologically, there are still doubts about the application in practice. This, however, should not be a constraint for science teachers to implement basic principles of constructivism as one of the alternative solutions to educational reform and movement in the elementary school science. Keywords: constructivism, science learning science, elementary school science

This study aims to analyze the science competencies in the JHS (Junior High Schools) which is integrated to disaster mitigation education (earthquake, tsunami, and volcano) in the School-Based Curriculum (KTSP) and the revised 2013 Curriculum in shaping a disaster response character. This study focuses on operational competencies that are potential to be integrated with disaster mitigation education, especially geological disasters. This was a library research analyzing any issues (problems) based on supporting literature reviewed. The data were collected through documentation, observation, and recorded findings that support to the research focus. As many as 40 science teachers and all documents of the implementation of the KTSP and revised-2013 Curriculum were involved in this study. Then the data were analyzed using a coding technique according to the components of the research focus and described qualitatively. The results of the study show that the number of science-competencies which have the potential to be integrated with disaster mitigation education is considered low compared to the whole of Science competencies that students must achieve. 0.48 % of science-competencies in JHS are potential to be integrated with disaster mitigation education. These competencies are 0.72 % in grade VII, 0.25% in grade VIII, and 0.5% in grade IX. These findings indicate that the contents of the curriculum have not been considered as a means of instilling the natural disaster response character
