Abstract Purpose To identify the life domains that are most frequently reported to be affected in scoliosis patients undergoing brace treatment. Methods A search within the PubMed database was conducted and a total of 60 publications were selected. We classified the studies based on the methods used to measure patients’ quality of life (QoL) and categorized the life domains reported to be affected. Results Self-image/body configuration was the most reported affected domain of patients’ QoL, identified in 32 papers, whilst mental health/stress was the second most reported affected domain. Mental health was identified in 11 papers, and 11 papers using the BSSQ questionnaire reported medium stress amongst their participants. Vitality was the third most reported affected domain, identified in 12 papers. Conclusions Our review indicates that scoliotic adolescents treated with bracing suffer in their quality of life most from psychological burdens. To improve these patients’ life quality, more attention should be focussed on supporting their mental health.

Abstract Introduction: Along with the rising life expectancy, there occurs an increased interest in geriatric care and in assessment of life quality in elderly persons. This study sought to examine the effects of physical activity on the quality of life in students of the University of the Third Age (UTA). Another purpose was to determine correlations between physical activity at a young age and the level of health state and physical activity at the time of the research as well as assessing the effects of socio-demographic factors on the quality of life in elderly individuals. Material and methods: The study included 138 UTA students (113 females and 25 males) aged 50 and above from Warminsko-mazurskie region. The questionnaire consisting of two parts was applied as a research tool. The first part included the authors’ own questionnaire with general questions as well as questions regarding physical activity levels at a young age and at the time of the research. The second part was made up of the standardised WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire (shorter version of WHOQOL) which was used to assess the subjects’ quality of life. Results: No significant differences between physical activity levels at a young age and at the time of the research were noted (p < 0.05). Self-evaluation of both life quality and heath state was significantly higher in individuals engaged in vigorous and moderate physical activity (p < 0.05) than in the other group. Conclusions: Physical activity of UTA students determines their quality of life and health state. Socio-demographic factors such as sex, age and a place of living influence the scores regarding the quality of life in WHOQOL-BREF domains.

AbstractInfluence of precipitation and air temperature in production of litterfall in stretch of seasonal forest. Fragmentation and destruction of the Atlantic Rainforest make its conservation essential. The litter is an important component of this system, and reveals differences in deposition in the different Brazilian ecosystems. This research aims to evaluate the effect of rainfall and air temperature on litterfall input in a forest fragment at the municipality of Sorocaba, São Paulo State, Brazil. The average contribution of litterfall was 6.9±0.4Mg ha-1 yr-1, comprising 65% of leaves. There were differences between the seasons, with the less amount in the dry season. The correlation of litter and its fractions was not relevant for the same month of air temperature and rainfall measurement. However, the correlation is significant when related to the previous month, demonstrating that the response of vegetation to environmental changes is not immediate. Keywords: Climate; seasonality; Atlantic forest.

AbstractThe new species Byssoloma catillariosporum and Porina isidioambigua are described from NE Brazil. The first is reminiscent of B. leucoblepharum but differs by the consistently uniseptate ascospores. The second is characterized by tiny isidia and black perithecia with relatively large, 3-septate ascospores. Both species were found at the Área de Proteço Ambiental (APA) Morro do Urubu, an area of c. 214 hectares in the large (500 000 inhabitants) city of Aracaju. It is the only urban Mata Atlântica remnant in Aracaju, with mesophytic deciduous and semi-deciduous forest, and cerrado enclaves in isolated points.

AbstractThe new species Micarea corallothallina is described from Serra da Jibóia, Bahia, NE Brazil. It has a gnarled, coralloid, isidiose thallus and pale botryose apothecia. It was found in the Serra da Jibóia, a mountainous range with a maximum elevation of 800 m on smooth bark of trees. This Mata Atlantica fragment is located in the Santa Terezinha municipality, Bahia, NE Brazil, near the Castro Alves municipality boundary. This area can be considered as a rainforest enclave surrounded by Caatinga, and belongs to a disjunct set of mountains that extend from the southern coast of the state to the North-west and North.

A third place functions as a meeting platform for people outside their daily routine in homes, working places, and can enhance the life quality of urban society, especially during the increasingly individualist era due to the growth of technology. Penjaringan District has one of the busiest nodes in Jakarta City, and consists of housing (first place) and offices (second place) with relatively large and equal percentage, and with the positions which allows permeability. The design site which is located between Pluit and Penjaringan Subdistricts, is chosen based on the performed district investigation. Nearby facilities have the potential to be improved, such as Putra Putri Park, Penjaringan Busway Station, and Pluit Junction Mall.  A skywalk is introduced to connect the facilites by acting as a platform to bring mobility from and to Penjaringan Busway Station to vitalize Pluit Junction Mall and Putra Putri Park which in their existing condition did not function as intended. The designed third place which is connected with the skywalk becomes one with the formed connectivity. Music is the chosen theme for the third place as a binder of the people with their differing backgrounds. The proxemics approach and the Pattern Language method are used to shape the spaces to encourage social interaction. The vision is to make the third place to be “a large living room” for Penjaringan District. The third place which provides a freedom of expression and encourages visitors to bring and play music instruments is hoped to act as an interaction and activity platform for both the locals and outsiders.

For this, we made thematic maps, which allowed the identification, characterization and mapping of different landscapes and the articulations, what subsidized the proposal of a zoning and, elaboration of guidelines for the management planting. Therefore, it was possible to observe that because the areas of study are located almost totally in the urban perimeter of Santa Maria they suffer pressures routinely in relation to the urban expansion and property speculation. We also highlight that both areas of the parks are in Biosphere Reserve of the Atlantic Forest. Before this result and the others, it was still generated the maps of environmental zoning. Finally, we believe that the implantation of Conservation Units in the areas of study is determinant for the conservation of these areas. Keywords: Conservation Units. Parque São Vicente Pallotti.
