Abstract. The aim of this research is to describe the discourse and the classroom teaching approach of Physical Education teachers in relation to the Didactic Content Knowledge (CDC). The construction of didactic and consequently pedagogical knowledge is generated from school practices, producing an articulated learning knowledge and located in the relationship between theory and practice, which includes didactic, pedagogical, disciplinary, professional, and practical aspects of the teaching profession. In this sense, the objective of this research was to understand the construction process and the sources of CDC in Physical Education teachers from the Maule region in Chile. The methodology used is qualitative, since it is based on the interpretive-comprehensive paradigm that seeks to understand complex phenomena. In terms of design, six semi-structured interviews were conducted with Physical Education teachers working in the Maule Region, Chile. The process of coding, categorization, and interpretation allowed us to conclude that even if teachers have disciplinary knowledge that does not guarantee quality learning for students who participate in the Physical Education classroom, since a general pedagogical knowledge is required, which allows teachers to plan, organize, and execute quality teaching-learning situations.

Abstract. The objective of the study is to examine secondary education physical education teachers’ knowledge and pedagogical knowledge of contents, depending on their initial and permanent education, as well as on the classes they teach, as the former represents a key feature for teachers. A total of 18 secondary education PE teachers (72% of the existing teachers’ workforce; 14 men and four women) answered a questionnaire. Additionally, four of them were interviewed in order to collect further information. The results show that interest in knowing the content predominates in initial education and when presenting new contents, whereas pedagogical knowledge is the focus of teachers when they claim to master a certain content. These results can be used to promote in-service teachers’ improvement in these two key aspects of pedagogical knowledge, as well as to enhance teaching efficiency in PE. Population and addressed topics may be considered as limitations of this sudy.

<p>The objective of this article was to identify Brazilians engineering students’ perceptions<br />about the relevance of pedagogical knowledge and its implications for the professional<br />preparation. The interest in the study was due to the urgency to promote actions which can<br />contribute to the improvement of higher education, as well as the lack of studies highlighting<br />the students’ perceptions and experiences in relation to what they consider a good class and<br />good teaching/learning strategies used by teachers. The approach used was qualitative. The<br />sample consisted of nine students from the 4th and 5th years of the Mechanical and Civil<br />Engineering courses of a public university in south Brazil. The data was collected through<br />individual semi-structured interviews. The main results allowed to reflect on how teaching<br />and learning strategies influence to define what students consider a good class and what<br />characterizes a good teacher. Evidence also suggests that there is a predominance of lectures<br />through slides projection in which students do not actively participate during the classes, and<br />as characteristics of a good teacher emerges: teachers’ mastery of scientific knowledge,<br />mastery of the pedagogical knowledge (didactics), ability to contextualize the content, to<br />relate theory and practice, and the ability to motivate and develop good relationship with<br />students.</p><p> </p>

<p><span lang="EN-US">This article makes an analysis of the pedagogical teaching practices used and developed by Chilean physical education teachers during the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic periods. The virus from China spread around the world, changed our daily lives and as such, at the same time impacted the educational system in a matter of weeks. Confinement led educational systems to eliminate face-to-face and use virtual teaching in order to continue with the teaching-learning processes, including the physical education discipline. From the methodological point of view, the study is installed in the interpretive-qualitative perspective, in such a way that 14 semi-structured interviews were carried by physical education teachers from the Maule-Chile region, via team, Zoom, Skype, because of the pandemic, face-to-face contact was impossible. The result of the study shows the impact on the quality of life of teachers and students because of the confinement. The pedagogical reconfiguration that teachers experienced in a matter of days, led them to use different virtual platforms to continue connected with their students, in order to deploy the learning objectives defined by the Chilean Ministry of Education. However, the foregoing shows the scarce possibility of verifying student learning, due to the difficulties of monitoring and feedback.</span></p>

Purpose: The authors assessed common content knowledge of health-related fitness in a national representative sample of preservice physical education teachers in the United States. Methods: Six hundred and twenty-one preservice physical education teachers from 68 physical education teacher education (PETE) programs located in different regions in the United States completed the 40 multiple choice items health-related fitness knowledge test during the semester prior to their student teaching. In addition, each PETE program coordinator/department head completed the PETE Program Information Questionnaire. Results: The mean percentage correct on the test was 61.3% (M = 24.5, SD = 4.9). Analyses of variance and t-test analyses indicated that common content knowledge of health-related fitness was not a function of sex, program size, or region of the United States. Discussion/Conclusions: These data suggest that preservice physical education teachers in the United States lack common content knowledge of health-related fitness and warrant the attention of PETE programs.

The context for the present study is the one-year initial teacher education course for postgraduates specialising in physical education at the secondary level. The research focus is on the conflicts which pre service teachers experience during the school practice element of a University- School Partnership Scheme based on the new government criteria and procedures introduced in the DFE Circular No. 9/92 for England and Wales. Fifty-three postgraduate students completed report forms about their teaching concerns at the end of each week of a six-week and an eleven-week block practice, and, of the 1510 concerns reported, 257 (17.02%) were classed as conflicts. A content analysis of the 'conflict' concerns revealed four general categories of conflict, and these were related to school staff and peers, the school and university working procedures, the demands from the school and the university, and beliefs and values about the teaching profession. The paper argues that such conflicts are viewed with much apprehension by pre-service teachers because of the additional responsibilities and powers placed on school subject mentors and the more limited time available in the university to prepare for the practical activities. Therefore, it is suggested that University-School Partnership Schemes should build in arrangements that give pre service teachers the opportunity to resolve deep-seated problems by being able to approach neutral staff from either the university or the school.

ABSTRACT Objective: To analyze the development of professional skills in an obstetric nursing graduate course. Method: Qualitative research, applying semi-structured interviews with 11 students in the obstetric nursing specialization at the State University of Ceará. Data was submitted to thematic review. Results: According to the subjects, the course offers the development of skills to strengthen and expand the range of activities in obstetric nursing. Despite relying on previous knowledge and experience acquired by the students, there is a gap between the content taught and internship practice, presented as challenges and difficulties faced by the students. The findings suggest a need for curricular revision, incorporating active teaching-learning methodologies, to overcome the disjunction between theory and practice. Final considerations: Students are part of a corpus that is potentially implicated in the construction and transformation of thoughts and values set forth by educational and health institutions, and it is necessary to make changes in political and social organizations, with a focus on providing comprehensive and egalitarian care to the population.
