The “Predict Organize Search Summarize Evaluate” (POSSE) is one strategy that can enhance students’ comprehension in reading. Two classes of Arabic and History students chosen through cluster random sampling technique were used as the sample of the research. Reading tests were used to collect the data which was given to both of classes on pre-test and post-test. The result of the research showed that the implementation of Predict Organize Search Summarize Evaluate strategy gave a significant difference in term of the students-learning outcome between the students who were taught through POSSE strategy and by traditional one. The finding of the study showed that teaching reading by using POSSE strategy gave significant effect towards students’ reading comprehension. This strategy could improve the students’ reading component on finding topic. It can be concluded that using POSSE Strategy has improved Indonesian students’ reading comprehension. It is also recommended for English lecturers use POSSE strategy as one of teaching strategies for reading comprehension.

This paper reports on two studies in which different adult populations who had not formally studied psychology completed multiple-choice tests derived from general psychology textbooks to evaluate specific knowledge of the discipline. The aim was to determine to what extent psychology was “common sense” and which personal characteristics, such as sex, education, and age, best predicted correct answers. In the first study, 114 students about to start a psychology degree, and 222 nonstudent adults, completed a 106-item questionnaire taken from a standard textbook. There was considerable variability in the extent to which participants checked the correct answer, with an overall average of only 56% (just above chance). There was no statistical difference between the two groups in knowledge overall or in any particular areas. A regression showed books read and belief in the scientific nature of psychology to be the best predictors of overall knowledge. In the second study, 94 first-year students at the beginning of their course and 136 student applicants completed a 114-item questionnaire derived from a different textbook, this time focusing on child development. There was no difference in the correct responses between a psychology-student and nonstudent group, with both groups getting around 53% of the answers correct. Interest in, and experience of, psychology did not predict total correct scores. Like previous studies in the area, the results failed to indicate any major variables that predict knowledge of psychological processes.

Kata kunci: Strategi pembacaan kolaboratif yang diubah suai; pemahaman pembacaaan; pembelajaran koperatif; bahasa Inggeris sebagai bahasa asing; Iran The aim of this study was to determine the effects of a Modified Collaborative Strategic Reading (MCSR) intervention on reading performance among first-year students in a public university in Iran. A quasi-experiment method using a pre-test-post-test design was utilized. The intervention was implemented to 42 Iranian university-level EFL freshmen. The students met once a week and received the MCSR intervention for 90 minutes over six weeks. A researcher-developed reading comprehension test was group administered at the pre- and post-tests. Upon completion of the study, students’ perceptions regarding the MCSR intervention were also evaluated by means of an Opinionnaire®. Quantitative results indicated that participating students did not demonstrate significant gains in reading comprehension skills. However, qualitative evaluation revealed that students did have positive attitudes towards the MCSR intervention. We postulate that the participants may require intervention of considerably greater intensity in terms of instructional dosage than that provided in this research. Additionally, the data show that the students have a strong preference for communicative and cooperative activities and the popular thinking that they might resist group work (because of their long-standing conventional learning tradition) can no longer be true. Key words: Modified collaborative strategic reading; reading comprehension; cooperative learning; English as foreign language (EFL); Iran
