Wild bitter melon (Momordica charantia var. abbreviata Ser.) is a type of vine that grows wildly in the mountains and plains in Vietnam. The main use parts of the tree are fruit, stem, and leaf that can be eaten as vegetables. This study aims to (1) identify several bioactive chemical compounds in the stems and leaves of bitter melon trees in the forests in the district of Mang Yang, Gia Lai province; (2) evaluate the nutrient composition, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial ability of fresh juice and extract with ethanol 70°. The results indicated that fresh juice and ethanol 70° extract currently inhibited the growth of experimental strains of microorganisms, in which ethanol 70o extract gives the highest antimicrobial effect. The qualitative results determined that the chemical components of wide bitter melon consist of flavonoids, saponins, tannins, free reducing sugar, organic acids, starch, and fatty acids as the basis for the standardization of exploitation of medicinal resources this material.

Moringa pterygosperma is one of the plants in Indonesia that is often used in herbal medicine. Moringa leaves contain many phytochemical compounds, one of the compounds is flavonoids which function as antioxidants. Flavonoid compounds in vitro can inhibit lipid peroxidation by breaking the chain of peroxyl radicals. Moringa leaf benefits in the field of herbal medicine are formed with a variety of preparations. One of the preparations is in the form of extracts with the aim of attracting chemical components to natural materials The extraction process has a disadvantage because the level of solubility in water is still low. The nanoparticle technique is a strategy to increase the bioavalbicibility of herbal active compounds. This research was experimental in order to determine the total flavonoid levels contained in Moringa leaf extract. In addition, it was also to find out the antioxidant activity and particle size of the moringa leaf extract nanoparticles. Determination of flavonoid levels using spectrophotometric methods. The antioxidant activity of moringa leaf extract nanoparticles was tested using the DPPH method (2,2-diphenyl-picrylhdrazyl) and to determine the particle size used by using the Particle Size Analyzer (PSA). The results of the study showed total flavonoid levels in moringa leaf extract (1.97 ± 1.07)%. Antioxidant activity of 451.8 ppm with a reduction of 2.8% and particle size in the moringa leaf extract nanoparticles of ± 134.78 nm. Moringa leaf extract nanoparticles include low antioxidants. Biotransformation of caffeic acid with H2O2/Momordica charantia peroxidase at pH 5.0, 25 °C in the presence of acetone has resulted in the isolation of three caffeic acid trimers 1–3, five caffeic acid dimers 4–8, and one monomer 9. Among them, seven (1–7) are new compounds, and two (8 and 9) are known compounds, including one compound (9), which was obtained by biotransformation for the first time. The structures were established by 2D NMR techniques, such as HSQC, HMBC, and NOESY measurements. The possible mechanism for the formation of the products is also discussed. This is the first time that caffeic acid trimers have been obtained through the biotransformation of catalyzed by peroxidase in vitro. Compound 5 has shown much stronger anti-oxidative activity than the other caffeic acid polymers obtained.Key words: Momordica charantia peroxidase, caffeic acid, polymers of caffeic acid, biotransformation, antioxidant activity.

Bitter melon or bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) is a common vegetable in Asia and it is distinctive for its bitter taste. As an ingredient in folk medicine, research from different laboratories in recent years supports its potential medicinal applications with anti-tumor, anti-diabetic, anti-HIV activities in both in vitro and animal studies. In this short review, we summarize herein the recent progress in the antitumor aspect of bitter melon with a focus on the underlying molecular mechanisms. Further mechanistic studies as well as clinical trials are necessary to further verify its medicinal applications.

Background: To determine the charantin content, antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in-vitro of the bitter melon (Momordica charantia) in Thua Thien Hue.); Materials and Methods: bitter melon fruit was collected in Thua Thien Hue province, then taken to the laboratory for extraction, quantitation and activity test. Results: charantin content of bitter melon in Thua Thien Hue extracted with a solvent mixture of MeOH - CHCl3 (1:1 v/v) was found to be 0.204 %; antioxidant activity of FRAP content of fresh bitter melon extracted with solvent methanol was found to be 972.16 μmol Fe2+/L; the samples exhibited the antibacterial activity for four strains of bacterial pathogens with antimicrobial diameters from 14-17 mm. Conclusion: the charantin content of bitter melon fruit in Thua Thien Hue is high, the antioxidant and antibacterial activity are medium levels.
