This study was conducted to appraise climatic conditions for potential applications of solar energy units in Nawabshah and Quetta cities. For that, twenty two annual monthly average data of insolation on horizontal surface, at various slopes on titled surface, air temperature, earth skin temperature was acquired and evaluated through the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software. It is discovered from the study that Quetta is a more promising place for installation of solar energy applications as compared to Nawabshah as it receives more solar radiations and less air temperature.

Formulation of the problem. Understanding that solar energy is the main source of the majority of biological, chemical and physical processes on Earth, investigation of its influence on different climatic fields allows us to define the features of its space and hour fluctuations. To define radiation and temperature regime of the territory it is necessary to determine climatic features of the spreading surface, which absorbs and will transform solar energy. Considering the fact that modern climatic changes and their consequences cover all components of the system, today there is a problem of their further study for comprehension of atmospheric processes, modeling weather conditions on different territories depending on the properties. The purpose of the article is to determine interrelations between indexes of solar radiation (the Wolf's number) and air temperature, atmospheric pressure on the territory of Ukraine during 1965-2015, their change in space and time. Methods. Correlative method is one of the main methods of a statistical analysis which allows us to receive correlation coefficients of solar radiation variability indexes, air temperature, atmospheric pressure on the territory of the research. This technique estimates the extent of solar radiation influence on temperature regime of the territory and distribution of atmospheric pressure. Results. Coefficients of correlation, which characterize variability of solar radiation indexes, air temperature and atmospheric pressure on the explored territory have been received by means of statistical correlation analysis method. This technique allows us to estimate the degree and nature of solar radiation influence on a temperature regime of the territory and distribution of atmospheric pressure. It has been defined that direct correlative connection between indexes of solar radiation is characteristic of air temperature and atmospheric pressure fields. Significant statistical dependence between incoming solar radiation on the territory of Ukraine and atmospheric pressure has been noted during the spring and autumn periods mainly at the majority of stations. Between indexes of solar radiation and air temperature the inverse correlative connection in winter will be transformed to a direct connection during the spring and summer periods. Scientific novelty and practical significance. Physical processes, which happen in the atmosphere, are characterized by complex interrelations. For further research it is important to define solar radiation value and the extent of influence on climatic conditions.

ABSTRACTWe reported on our experiences with teaching several semesters of undergraduate nanotechnology courses at both the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) and National Dong Hwa University (NDHU) in Taiwan. Students who were enrolled in our classes at NTHU represented many different disciplines, but mainly in the physical sciences, engineering and life sciences. In contrast, students who were enrolled in our classes at NDHU dominated in the social sciences and arts. There were some interesting differences in addition to the similarities in their attitude toward the nanotechnology. Since this course is aimed at introducing the nanotechnology to students trained in different disciplines, we emphasized the fundamentals, current status, potential applications, and possible consequences of nanotechnology. This course also explored the close ties between nano-science and engineering (NS/E) and our daily life. Furthermore, this course elaborated on the interrelationships of NS/E with other subjects, particularly the biomimetics, smart systems, and biotechnology.

AbstractOver the period 1972–98 the height of the snow surface at eight Antarctic sites in Palmer Land and on Alexander Island has been measured with respect to fixed points on local nunataks. From these data an empirical relation between height changes over a given period and three key variables has been derived. These variables are (i) the local mean annual surface air temperature, (ii) a regional estimate of energy available for melt over the period (derived from the nearby Rothera air-temperature record) and (iii) a regional estimate of accumulation over the period (derived from the nearby Gomez Nunatak ice-core accumulation record). Using this relation, the contribution of the Antarctic Peninsula to sea-level rise for warming from climatic conditions (averaged over the last 30 years) is estimated to be −0.006 ± 0.002 mm a−1 K−1. If recent warm conditions persist, however, and meltwater can run off to the sea, the contribution to sea-level rise from ablation is calculated to be 0.07 ± 0.02 mm a−1 K−1.

Ego network data have a long history in the social sciences, acting as a bridge between traditional statistical techniques and network analysis. Ego network data provide personal network information, as the data are based on a sample of individuals. This chapter details the basic features of such data, describing the advantages, disadvantages, and potential applications of using ego network data. Ego network data remain a popular choice, despite the growing availability of full network data sources. This is in large part because ego network data are easy to collect but still provide a surprisingly large amount of network information. Ego network data are also quite flexible, with past work using the same basic data structure for widely different purposes. Given the ease of collection and the flexibility of use, there is every reason to believe that ego network data will continue to be a useful option for network scholars.

The influence of snow cover on the dynamics of soil temperature in the modern climatic conditions of the Eurasian Subarctic was investigated through a quantitative assessment of the features of the seasonal and long-term variation of parameters. Seasonal and long-term values of soil temperature for stable snow period decrease from west to east: a decrease of snow thickness and air temperature from west to east of Eurasia leads to a weakening of the heat-insulating properties of the snow cover with a significant decrease in regional air temperatures. With the emergence of a stable snow cover, the soil temperature seasonal and long-term standard deviation sharply decreases compared to the autumn and spring periods. With the appearance of snow cover, the soil temperature standard deviation drops sharply compared to the autumn and spring periods. An exception is the northeast of Siberia: here, a relatively small thickness of snow determines a noticeable dependence of the course of soil temperature on the dynamics of surface air temperature. There are no significant long-term trends in soil temperature due to its low variability during winter period. Analysis of the course of the studied characteristics anomalies showed an insignificant and non-systematic number of their coincidences. Currently, we have not found similar research results for large regions. The revealed patterns can be used in the analysis of the results of monitoring the state of the land surface, in the development of remote sensing algorithms, in the refinement of predictive scenarios of environmental changes.

Abstract. Factorial survey experiments are increasingly used in the social sciences to investigate behavioral intentions. The measurement of self-reported behavioral intentions with factorial survey experiments frequently assumes that the determinants of intended behavior affect actual behavior in a similar way. We critically investigate this fundamental assumption using the misdirected email technique. Student participants of a survey were randomly assigned to a field experiment or a survey experiment. The email informs the recipient about the reception of a scholarship with varying stakes (full-time vs. book) and recipient’s names (German vs. Arabic). In the survey experiment, respondents saw an image of the same email. This validation design ensured a high level of correspondence between units, settings, and treatments across both studies. Results reveal that while the frequencies of self-reported intentions and actual behavior deviate, treatments show similar relative effects. Hence, although further research on this topic is needed, this study suggests that determinants of behavior might be inferred from behavioral intentions measured with survey experiments.
