Reconfigurable circuit designs for automatic seizure detection devices are essential to prevent epilepsy affected people from severe injuries and other health-related problems. In this proposed design, an automatic seizure detection algorithm based on the Linear binary Support Vector Machine learning algorithm (LSVM) is developed and implemented in a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The experimental results showed that the mean detection accuracy is 86% and sensitivity is 97%. The resource utilization of the implemented design is less when compared to existing hardware implementations. The power consumption of the proposed design is 76mW at 100MHz. The experimental results assure that a physician can make use of this proposed design in detecting seizure events.

In order to solve the current traffic sign detection technology due to the interference of various complex factors, it is difficult to effectively carry out the correct detection of traffic signs, and the robustness is weak, a traffic sign detection algorithm based on the region of interest extraction and double filter is designed.First, in order to reduce environmental interference, the input image is preprocessed to enhance the main color of each logo.Secondly, in order to improve the extraction ability Of Regions Of Interest, a Region Of Interest (ROI) detector based on Maximally Stable Extremal Regions (MSER) and Wave Equation (WE) was defined, and candidate Regions were selected through the ROI detector. Then, an effective HOG (Histogram of Oriented Gradient) descriptor is introduced as the detection feature of traffic signs, and SVM (Support Vector Machine) is used to classify them into traffic signs or background. Finally, the context-aware filter and the traffic light filter are used to further identify the false traffic signs and improve the detection accuracy. In the GTSDB database, three kinds of traffic signs, which are indicative, prohibited and dangerous, are tested, and the results show that the proposed algorithm has higher detection accuracy and robustness compared with the current traffic sign recognition technology.

Gait phase detection, which detects foot-contact and foot-off states during walking, is important for various applications, such as synchronous robotic assistance and health monitoring. Gait phase detection systems have been proposed with various wearable devices, sensing inertial, electromyography, or force myography information. In this paper, we present a novel gait phase detection system with static standing-based calibration using muscle deformation information. The gait phase detection algorithm can be calibrated within a short time using muscle deformation data by standing in several postures; it is not necessary to collect data while walking for calibration. A logistic regression algorithm is used as the machine learning algorithm, and the probability output is adjusted based on the angular velocity of the sensor. An experiment is performed with 10 subjects, and the detection accuracy of foot-contact and foot-off states is evaluated using video data for each subject. The median accuracy is approximately 90% during walking based on calibration for 60 s, which shows the feasibility of the static standing-based calibration method using muscle deformation information for foot-contact and foot-off state detection.

Localization is a fundamental research issue in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In most existing localization schemes, several beacons are used to determine the locations of sensor nodes. These localization mechanisms are frequently based on an assumption that the locations of beacons are known. Nevertheless, for many WSN systems deployed in unstable environments, beacons may be moved unexpectedly; that is, beacons are drifting, and their location information will no longer be reliable. As a result, the accuracy of localization will be greatly affected. In this paper, we propose a distributed beacon drifting detection algorithm to locate those accidentally moved beacons. In the proposed algorithm, we designed both beacon self-scoring and beacon-to-beacon negotiation mechanisms to improve detection accuracy while keeping the algorithm lightweight. Experimental results show that the algorithm achieves its designed goals.

This paper studies two different Electrocardiography (ECG) preprocessing algorithms, namely Pan and Tompkins (PT) and Derivative Based (DB) algorithm, which is crucial of QRS complex detection in cardiovascular disease detection. Both algorithms are compared in terms of QRS detection accuracy and computation timing performance, with implementation on System-on-Chip (SoC) based embedded system that prototype on Altera DE2-115 Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) platform as embedded software. Both algorithms are tested with 30 minutes ECG data from each of 48 different patient records obtain from MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. Results show that PT algorithm achieve 98.15% accuracy with 56.33 seconds computation while DB algorithm achieve 96.74% with only 22.14 seconds processing time. Based on the study, an optimized PT algorithm with improvement on Moving Windows Integrator (MWI) has been proposed to accelerate its computation. Result shows that the proposed optimized Moving Windows Integrator algorithm achieves 9.5 times speed up than original MWI while retaining its QRS detection accuracy.

Combustible gases, such as CH4 and CO, directly or indirectly affect the human body. Thus, leakage detection of combustible gases is essential for various industrial sites and daily life. Many types of gas sensors are used to identify these combustible gases, but since gas sensors generally have low selectivity among gases, coupling issues often arise which adversely affect gas detection accuracy. To solve this problem, we built a decoupling algorithm with different gas sensors using a machine learning algorithm. Commercially available semiconductor sensors were employed to detect CH4 and CO, and then support vector machine (SVM) applied as a supervised learning algorithm for gas classification. We also introduced a pairing plot scheme to more effectively classify gas type. The proposed model classified CH4 and CO gases 100% correctly at all levels above the minimum concentration the gas sensors could detect. Consequently, SVM with pairing plot is a memory efficient and promising method for more accurate gas classification.

This article presents an infrared–ultrasonic sensor fusion approach for support vector machine–based fall detection, often required by elderly healthcare. Its detection algorithms and performance evaluation are detailed. The location, size, and temperature profile of the user can be estimated based on a novel sensory fusion algorithm. Different feature sets of the support vector machine–based machine learning algorithm are analyzed and their impact on fall detection accuracy is evaluated and compared empirically. Experiments study three non-fall activities, standing, sitting, and stooping, and two fall actions, forward falling and sideway falling, to simulate daily activities of the elderly. Fall detection accuracy studies are performed based on discretely and continuously (closer to reality) recorded experimental data, respectively. For the discrete data recording, an average accuracy of 92.2% is achieved when the stand-alone Grid-EYE is used and the accuracy is increased to 96.7% when sensor fusion is used. For the continuous data recording (180 training sets, 60 test sets at each distance), an average accuracy less than 70.0% is achieved when the stand-alone Grid-EYE is used and the accuracy is increased to around 90.3% after sensor fusion. New features will be explored in the next step to further increase detection accuracy.

Support vector data description (SVDD) is a machine learning technique that is used for single-class classification and outlier detection. The idea of SVDD is to find a set of support vectors that defines a boundary around data. When dealing with online or large data, existing batch SVDD methods have to be rerun in each iteration. We propose an incremental learning algorithm for SVDD that uses the Gaussian kernel. This algorithm builds on the observation that all support vectors on the boundary have the same distance to the center of sphere in a higher-dimensional feature space as mapped by the Gaussian kernel function. Each iteration involves only the existing support vectors and the new data point. Moreover, the algorithm is based solely on matrix manipulations; the support vectors and their corresponding Lagrange multiplier αi’s are automatically selected and determined in each iteration. It can be seen that the complexity of our algorithm in each iteration is only O(k2), where k is the number of support vectors. Experimental results on some real data sets indicate that FISVDD demonstrates significant gains in efficiency with almost no loss in either outlier detection accuracy or objective function value.

In view of the current absence of any deep learning algorithm for shellfish identification in real contexts, an improved Faster R-CNN-based detection algorithm is proposed in this paper. It achieves multiobject recognition and localization through a second-order detection network and replaces the original feature extraction module with DenseNet, which can fuse multilevel feature information, increase network depth, and avoid the disappearance of network gradients. Meanwhile, the proposal merging strategy is improved with Soft-NMS, where an attenuation function is designed to replace the conventional NMS algorithm, thereby avoiding missed detection of adjacent or overlapping objects and enhancing the network detection accuracy under multiple objects. By constructing a real contexts shellfish dataset and conducting experimental tests on a vision recognition seafood sorting robot production line, we were able to detect the features of shellfish in different scenarios, and the detection accuracy was improved by nearly 4% compared to the original detection model, achieving a better detection accuracy. This provides favorable technical support for future quality sorting of seafood using the improved Faster R-CNN-based approach.

Accurate and efficient detection of cell nuclei is an important step towards the development of a pathology-based Computer Aided Diagnosis. Generally, high-resolution histopathology images are very large, in the order of billion pixels, therefore nuclei detection is a highly compute intensive task, and software implementation requires a significant amount of processing time. To assist the doctors in real time, special hardware accelerators, which can reduce the processing time, are required. In this paper, we propose a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) implementation of automated nuclei detection algorithm using generalized Laplacian of Gaussian filters. The experimental results show that the implemented architecture has the potential to provide a significant improvement in processing time without losing detection accuracy.

Obstacle detection in complex urban traffic environment has become an important part of unmanned vehicle optimization, and its complexity brings great challenges to the reliability of unmanned target detection. YOLOv3 in deep learning algorithm has a good detection effect in target detection, but it has certain defects in detecting targets in complex urban traffic environment. In this paper, the spatial pyramid module is added to YOLOv3 to improve the extraction of data features of the deep model. Then, on the basis of optimized network, the target detection algorithm is streamlined by combining layer pruning and channel pruning. The streamlined algorithm is called YOLOv3-SPP3-Tiny. Comparing the experimental results of YOLOv3-SPP3-tiny and YOLOv3 on Street Scenes dataset, the Precision is improved by 2.77%, the average precision (mAP) is increased by 0.87%, the Total BFLOPS is reduced by 94.49%, and the Inference time is reduced by 80.39%. Experimental results show that the model YOLOv3-SPP3-tiny algorithm is more conducive to unmanned object detection in complex urban road environment.
