Higher education institutions are increasingly concerned about the impact of the disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on students and learning activities. Yet, we know little about the effect of this disruption, specifically on students in distance learning higher education institutions. This study drew from survey responses of 555 undergraduate students at The Open University, UK. The aims of this study were to understand the impact of the Covid-19 disruption on learning, assessment and social activities that distance learning students commonly undertake and to explore how this impact relates to their background characteristics (socio-demographics and study properties). Findings showed that overall, students engaged in their study activities less frequently, with learning-related activities (e.g., joining live sessions) having the highest negative impact and social activities (e.g., accessing email for study purposes) the lowest. Female students were more likely than male to engage less across all three activity categories. Background characteristics, such as age, faculty and race, were associated with particular activity categories. This study is the first step towards enhancing our understanding of the engagement of distance learning, but also campus-based students in emergency distance learning, in online learning activities during the Covid-19 pandemic and other similar disruptions.

The purpose of this study was to identify the impact of implementing a Learning Management System (LMS) ‘TES BlendSpace’ to promote students’ self-directed learning in EFL flipped-class instruction. For the data collection procedure, an individual interview with ten undergraduate students from an Indonesian college was conducted to demonstrate the potential impacts of the LMS in students’ self-directed learning abilities. The observation of students’ learning activities on the TES BlendSpace was also recorded to support the interview data. The LMS was adopted to distribute and receive information. Thus, the students were able to monitor learning activities, learn the contents before coming to class, evaluate the learning process, and interact with others outside of class hours. The finding of this study suggests that the LMS TES BlendSpace is recommended to be performed in teaching EFL for higher education in Indonesia. It offers students’ occasion to practice and enhances their listening, writing, reading and vocabulary skills in and out-of-class times. It also prepares students to get ready for classroom activities in terms of conversations and speaking skills. The further use of the LMSs should become often-visited sites by students for learning activities and replacing other non-educational favorite websites. The finding of this study indicates that the students’ online culture was predominantly formed by the interesting contents posting on the LMS, especially the video lectures and an easy way to use. Additionally, instructors should develop activities in and around the LMS with a number of benefits and rewards. Hence, the students will be motivated to log in the LMS for learning purposes.

Higher education has been shifting to learning management systems (LMS) for decades. Some universities, like the Open University, have managed to gain international recognition by providing undergraduate degrees to students in different countries. However, in moments of emergency and international disruption higher education institutions need to adapt at unprecedented speed. This chapter focuses on the use of technology in moments of extreme internationalised interference. Using the COVID-19 pandemic as a ground for change, students enrolled in presential courses in Spain, Malta, and the United Kingdom were interviewed in order to understand how they are coping with having contact with their academic life exclusively online. The students' impressions, LMS software, and results (assignments and exams) were also discussed. Finally, the chapter analyses the solutions provided by lecturers and students.

The article substantiates the expediency of intensifying the independent work of students in view of the active introduction of distance learning in the educational process of higher education. The relevance of the chosen topic based on the analysis of domestic scientific sources is proved. Questionnaires were selected to investigate the attitude of students to the introduction of distance learning technologies (concluded by the authors) and to identify features of independent learning activities of students in distance learning (two adapted questionnaires, by O. Tsis and V. Lyaudis). The survey was conducted with the participation of second, third and fourth year bachelor students of the Department of Pedagogy and Special Education of Oles Honchar Dnipro National University. According to the results of the ascertaining stage of the questionnaire, the significance of information and computer technologies in the educational process of the specified university is clarified and the most relevant for effective provision of distance learning is determined among them. The gradual growth of the rating of the online format of education is outlined: from the perception of almost half of respondents as a modern alternative to traditional education – to take an almost dominant position in the case of their independent learning activities, especially for high school students. Some students even reported improved performance through new opportunities for self-study, and most respondents did not feel the negative impact of changing the form of study and increasing the amount of independent work. At the same time, there were obstacles to the effectiveness of self-study in the form of lack of information skills in a third of respondents and the skills of organizing independent work in a quarter of respondents. According to the results of the survey, the lack of the proper level of self-regulation of educational activities, volitional and motivational characteristics of the individual in the vast majority of bachelors. The necessity of reorganization of the content, character, ways of independent work of students depending on the course of study for the purpose of formation of personal and professional competences of applicants of higher education in the field of special pedagogy is confirmed.

Objectives: This qualitative study explored the role strain of women as nurse educators of selected higher education institutions in Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines. The findings served as basis for recommendations. Specifically, the study answered the following questions:1.What are the responsibilities of the informants at home, workplace, and civic and religious organizations?2.What are the sources of their role strain in terms of role conflict and role overload?3.What is the impact of the role strain to their family and work?4.How do the informants balance their roles?5.What support system help in addressing the role strain? Methods:This feminist study was conducted in three higher education institutions of Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines. There were five women working as nurse educators and were selected purposively with the following inclusion criteria: currently employed as a nurse educator for five years or more; married; has two to three children and a member of a civic and religious organization. The study employed a one-on-one structured interview.Findings and Conclusion:The informants revealed that their primary responsibility at home is to take care of the needs of their husband and children. At work, they prepare and deliver lectures and examinations to undergraduate students. They also attend seminars, trainings, and bible studies. These responsibilities have caused role strains. They claimed that they lack time and energy to accomplish multiple tasks. The impact of role strain is work-family conflict. The role strain experience can be handled through time management which helps them in balancing all their roles. The family also helps them in addressing role strain that they experience. From the data collected, it revealed that work interfering with family is the role strain of the nurse educators. Therefore, the role strain they experience adversely affected their role as a mother and as a nurse educator.Recommended citation:Acla, J. G. & Amparado, M. A. P. (2010, March). Many lecturers preach teamwork, but they do not practice it by sharing responsibility for classes. Particularly in a transnational context, inputs from lecturers and learners from various countries might be beneficial for students’ learning. This paper asks the question: How can higher education institutions (HEI) set up cross-country and cross-HEI co-teaching to facilitate the transfer of host and home country knowledge? The authors provide insights into a transnational co-teaching project that partly relies on virtual distance learning across countries. This real-life project supports small and medium sized enterprises in their international endeavours with the support of lecturers and student teams from the respective host countries as well as their home countries. The authors discuss advantages and disadvantages of cross-country and cross–HEI co-teaching in comparison to traditional teaching methods. Furthermore, the authors elaborate on the impact of virtual distance learning in comparison to in-class teaching at a single physical location. Due to the international nature of the project, it mainly relies on distance learning that can be very effective when implemented correctly. The paper provides lessons learned from the project that might be beneficial for lecturers with and without international components in their teaching.
