This chapter describes four catalysts for planting new congregations that seem driven more by terrestrial chance and happenstance than celestial directives. The first of these, difficulties on the job market, not only is a catalyst for the decision to start a new congregation but is claimed as the God-influenced rationale for doing so. The second social catalyst, congregational conflicts and division, is a common dynamic of established congregations that has a common but unexamined outcome: the birth of a new church. In the third social catalyst for church planting, being “pushed out of the nest,” leaders of parent congregations encourage their associate ministers to plant a new church. The final phenomenon, the evolution of a parachurch ministry, is the most serendipitous catalyst for finding oneself in a founding pastorate. These entrepreneurs set out to create parachurch organizations, usually for Bible studies, with no interest at all in starting a formal church.

AbstractPoverty and impoverishment are social realities that have been struggling for most of the world community to this day. Christians who are part of society that form social fibers with the stereotype of "loving" should have social concern for the problems of poverty and impoverishment. The facts show that some Christians are indifferent in the face of such struggles. This study aims to show the fact that Christian scriptures actually accommodate poverty struggles. This research uses a qualitative approach methodology. Sources of data were obtained from Bible studies and literature consisting of books, internet, articles, and other written data related to this research.Specifically, this research will apply the Biblical Theology method including a hermeneutic approach to Bible study with the aim of understanding the meaning of the text which in this study is associated with the problems of poverty and impoverishment. This paper aims to show that the Christian scriptures basically accommodate the problems of poverty and impoverishment which are social facts that become an integral part of the life of Christian faith.  The research results show three accommodations of Christian Scriptures to the problems of poverty and impoverishment, among others: Theism in Christian scriptures that embraces the poor, Messianism in Christian scriptures that embraces the poor, and Axiologism in Christian scriptures.

Scholars of pre-Modern literature are becoming increasingly aware of the necessity to include the study of lost texts within literary histories (Matthews 2020, 230). The study of lost literary works (eclipsaphilology) can make use of techniques belonging to the field of textual criticism such as stemmatics, but is able to go beyond them in reconstructing the contents, and not necessarily form, when – for example – disentangling remnants of source texts from compilations. This mode of study has long been practiced in Bible Studies, for example by the proponents of the documentary hypothesis. In this article, I attempt to lay out the contents of the lost original of a component text of the fourteenth-century Sturlunga saga, namely: Þórðar saga kakala (*Þórðar saga kakala hin mikla). The approach taken to reconstructing the content of the lost original of Þórðar saga kakala in this article is an inversion of redaction criticism. It seeks after the contents of the source text, *Þórðar saga kakala hin mikla, by taking the contents of Þórðar saga kakala in the extant manuscripts and reversing the compilational and editorial processes in play throughout its transmission history. This critique makes use of the categories of evidence used in textual criticism (external and internal evidence), but is not interested in the production of an edition of the lost original.

The Oxford Handbook of Feminist Approaches to the Hebrew Bible brings together thirty-seven essential essays written by leading international scholars, examining crucial points of analysis within the field of feminist Hebrew Bible studies. Organized into four major areas — globalization, neoliberalism, media, and intersectionality, the essays provide vibrant, relevant, and innovative contributions to the field. The topics of analysis focus heavily on gender and queer identity, with essays touching on African, Korean, and European feminist hermeneutics, womanist and interreligious readings, ecofeminist and animal biblical studies, migration biblical studies, the role of gender binary voices in evangelical-egalitarian approaches, oand the examination of scripture in light of trans women’s voices. The volume includes essays examining the Old Testament as recited in music, literature, film, and video games. In short, the book offers a vision for feminist biblical scholarship beyond the hegemonic status quo prevalent in the field of biblical studies, in many religious organizations and institutions that claim the Bible as a sacred text, and among the public that often mentions the Bible to establish religious, political, and socio-cultural restrictions for gendered practices. The exegetically and hermeneutically diverse essays demonstrate that feminist biblical scholarship forges ahead with the task of engaging the many issues and practices that keep the gender caste system in place even in the early part of the twenty-first century. The essays of this volume thus offer conceptual and exegetical ways forward at a historic moment of global transformation and emerging possibilities.

Religion was as much a concern for Frank Russell throughout his life as it was for younger brother Bertrand and their father before them. Each advocated its rational study untainted by Christian dogma. The chance discovery of an amusing film review by Frank Russell of the biblical epic The Dawn of the World (1921) became the catalyst for an exploration of this theme in the paper that follows, as well as providing the opportunity to explore the foundations of Frank’s agnosticism and demonstrate his erudition and wit through the reprinting of his article “The Bible on the Film”.

Many have come to associate discipleship process in the church with Bible studies. As such, preachers pay little attention to disciple-making in their delivery with the assumption that preaching time is not the time to build up disciples. Some preachers are also affected by postmodernism, capitalism, and secularization-individualism and as such want to project themselves only and think about what they can get. They forget that biblical leadership is about building others and developing other people’s faith in Jesus Christ so that they grow to maturity. Preachers who do not see the need to build others and overlook committing the word to them cannot be ideal leaders of the church. Bearing in mind that the key role of the pastor is preaching, this paper emphasizes the role of the preacher in disciple-making. It argues that for effective disciple-making, the preacher must intentionally aim at committing the message to others who have the capacity to teach others too in order to have a multiplicative effect. Using the practical theology approach, the paper demonstrates that when a preacher builds relationships intentionally, lives a life of integrity, and builds up knowledge, the command to commit the word to faithful brethren can be fulfilled.

Objectives: This qualitative study explored the role strain of women as nurse educators of selected higher education institutions in Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines. The findings served as basis for recommendations. Specifically, the study answered the following questions:1.What are the responsibilities of the informants at home, workplace, and civic and religious organizations?2.What are the sources of their role strain in terms of role conflict and role overload?3.What is the impact of the role strain to their family and work?4.How do the informants balance their roles?5.What support system help in addressing the role strain? Methods:This feminist study was conducted in three higher education institutions of Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines. There were five women working as nurse educators and were selected purposively with the following inclusion criteria: currently employed as a nurse educator for five years or more; married; has two to three children and a member of a civic and religious organization. The study employed a one-on-one structured interview.Findings and Conclusion:The informants revealed that their primary responsibility at home is to take care of the needs of their husband and children. At work, they prepare and deliver lectures and examinations to undergraduate students. They also attend seminars, trainings, and bible studies. These responsibilities have caused role strains. They claimed that they lack time and energy to accomplish multiple tasks. The impact of role strain is work-family conflict. The role strain experience can be handled through time management which helps them in balancing all their roles. The family also helps them in addressing role strain that they experience. From the data collected, it revealed that work interfering with family is the role strain of the nurse educators. Therefore, the role strain they experience adversely affected their role as a mother and as a nurse educator.Recommended citation:Acla, J. G. & Amparado, M. A. P. (2010, March).
