This study aim to explore the experiences of nursing final-year students on the care of the person in a palliative situation and their family using the role-playing technique. Qualitative, descriptive research developed in October 2020 with 30 third-year nursing students from a palliative care nursing course, in Portugal. Individual debriefing reflections and thematic analysis of the information were conducted. Two main themes emerged: 1) facilitators; and 2) barriers of role-playing in a simulated palliative care context. We concluded that type of simulation allows students to deal with complex palliative care situations from an individual and realistic perspective.

Effective communication and interaction enable nurses to develop caring, empathetic, and respectful relationships with patients and families. However, most nurses feel a lack of preparation in the “soft” skills of communication, professionalism, and leadership. Nurse managers are seeking graduates with strong emotional quotient characteristics such as self-awareness, motivation, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills. Assisting nursing students to develop these intangible, high-level skills presents an ongoing challenge to nurse educators. This creative teaching learning strategy examines the use of psychosocial role-playing skits to enhance nursing student development of the soft skills of nursing. In this strategy, senior level nursing students work in small groups to develop and present realistic 3- to 5-minute skits based on common nurse–patient, nurse–family, or nurse–health care team interactions that incorporate the concepts of therapeutic communication, interpersonal interaction, empathy, active listening, teamwork, delegation, and/or professionalism, followed by a debriefing session. Student feedback suggests that confidence and competence related to the skills of therapeutic communication, interpersonal interaction, empathy, active listening, teamwork, delegation, and professionalism may improve by incorporating soft skill psychosocial role-playing into a nursing education course of study.

Background: Nurses are the largest regulated group of healthcare professionals involved in palliative care. In 2004, a taskforce of the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC) launched the ‘Guide for development of palliative nurse education in Europe’ (hereinafter, the EAPC 2004 Guide). No systematic evaluation of its impact in the development of palliative care education was undertaken. Aims: To describe current undergraduate and postgraduate nursing education across Europe; to identify the roles that nurses with different palliative care educational levels have in palliative care; and to assess the uptake of the EAPC 2004 Guide in the development of palliative care nursing in Europe. Design: Descriptive research involving an online survey among nursing experts, and the consultation of national representatives. Setting/participants: A total of 135 nurses (52% response rate) from 25 countries completed the online survey; representatives from 16 countries were consulted. Results: In 14 (56%) countries, palliative care was not identified as a mandatory subject within undergraduate nursing education. The EAPC 2004 Guide is widely known and was/is being used in many countries to promote palliative care nursing education. Large variations were found across and within country responses. Conclusions: Palliative care nursing education varies largely in Europe. The wide awareness and use of the EAPC 2004 Guide show how policy measures can influence the development of palliative care education. Recommendations are built and focus on both fostering the use of this guide and implementing policy measures to ensure that palliative care nursing is recognised and certified as a specialty in all European countries.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify the nursing academic's knowledge about the education in health. Method: this is about a descriptive and exploratory study from qualitative approach that had as subjects ten nursing students from 3rd to 8th period of the nursing course of a private university in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The choice was random and for the fact of the same ones have already lived the theoretical-practical teaching, where they had the opportunity to develop educational activities in health in the practical field. It was used as instrument for data collection an interview itinerary composed by open questions. The collection of data closed up after the saturation of the speeches and the interpretation of the same ones was accomplished through the Thematic Analysis. Results: after analysis of the data, two categories emerged: The nursing academics and the education in health; The approach of the education in health in the graduation. Conclusion: this study showed us that the education in health needs to be analyzed continually, discussed and understood in the graduation as an important practice in the nurse's assistance performance. Simulation-based communication education has improved nursing students’ communication knowledge and skills. However, communication patterns that students commonly exhibit in simulated situations and students’ responses to specific clinical situations have not been systematically examined. The specific aims of the present study were (1) to identify non-therapeutic communication patterns that nursing students exhibit in simulated situations in the computer simulation-based education (ComEd) program, and (2) explore students’ responses to challenging clinical situations. This study used a mixed-method research design and a convenience sampling method to recruit participants. Frequency analysis and a conventional content analysis method were used to analyze answers provided by participants. A total of 66 students from four Korean nursing schools participated in the study. “False reassurance” was found to be the most common non-therapeutic communication pattern used by nursing students. Nursing students had difficulty in clinical situations such as reporting a patient’s condition to a doctor, communicating with a patient and perform basic nursing skills at the same time, and managing conflicts between patients. Technology-based communication simulation programs, which reflect various clinical situations, are considered a new alternative that can supplement the limitations of clinical practicum and improve the quality of nursing education.

This paper investigates student nurses' perceptions of the impact of using information technology (IT) on teaching and learning critical care nursing. This study was conducted at the Faculty of Nursing, Mansoura University, Egypt. The sample included 163 of fourth year Bachelor of Nursing students enrolled in a critical care nursing course during the first semester of the academic year 2007-2008. The data was collected using a questionnaire sheet that gathered information about student nurses' IT skills and use, perception of the access to and use of IT at Faculty of Nursing, perception of the impact of using IT on teaching and perception, and on the impact of using IT on learning the critical care nursing course. The findings indicate that nursing students had a positive perception on the impact of using IT on teaching and learning the critical care nursing course. Students wanted access to IT at the Faculty, and expressed their need for more training on using Internet and Microsoft PowerPoint, and for IT resources in classrooms.

Educating nursing students, clinicians, faculty, and researchers in palliative care is needed tremendously in this era of an aging population and the development of new technological ways of extending the lives of those with complex illness and/or injury. With new evidence-based resources being developed to enhance education, including guidelines, competencies, videos, standards, and procedures, educators have a plethora of materials to promote and disseminate palliative care education. Nurses, who represent the largest healthcare profession in the nation, can only practice and teach what they know. Because nurses spend more time at the bedside and out in the community consulting and providing care to those who are seriously ill and to their families, it is vital they be educated to provide competent and compassionate care to those who are most vulnerable.
