ABSTRACT Aim To assess and compare the knowledge of basic life support (BLS) among third, fourth and fifth (III, IV and V) year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) clinical students, dental interns, postgraduate students and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) faculty of Panineeya Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Hyderabad, India. Materials and methods A BLS questionnaire consisting of 22 questions was used to assess the levels of III, IV and V years BDS clinical students, dental interns, postgraduate students and BDS and MDS faculty of Panineeya Institute of Dental Sciences and Hospital, Hyderabad, India. Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (SPSS version 12.0) was used to analyze the statistical data. The p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results A total of 338 respondents took part in the study. When gender comparison was done with correct knowledge responses, statistically significant differences were noted for Q6, Q9, Q12, Q13, Q15 and Q17. For age groups and educational qualifications, significant difference was observed for all questions. It was noted that III, IV and V year undergraduate clinical students and half of interns had adequate knowledge when compared to postgraduate students (6.9%), BDS tutors (0.00%) and MDS staff (10.7%). Conclusion The study concludes that there is a significant lack of knowledge among postgraduates students BDS and MDS faculty, regarding BLS when compared to III, IV and V year's clinical BDS students and dental interns. Abstract Background Basic Life Support (BLS) is the recognition of sudden cardiac arrest and activation of the emergency response system, followed by resuscitation, and rapid defibrillation. According to WHO, Pakistan has one of the highest mortality rates from accidental deaths therefore assessment and comparison of BLS knowledge in health professionals is crucial. We thereby aim to assess and compare the knowledge of BLS in doctors, dentists and nurses. Methods A multi-centric cross-sectional survey was conducted in Karachi at different institutions belonging to the private as well as government sector from January to March 2018. We used a structured questionnaire which was adapted from pretested questionnaires that have been used previously in similar studies. Descriptive statistics were analyzed using SPSS v22.0, where adequate knowledge was taken as a score of at least 50%. P < 0.05 was considered as significant. Logistic regression was used to identify the factors affecting the knowledge regarding BLS in health care professionals. Results The responders consisted of 140 doctors, nurses and dentists each. Only one individual (dentist) received a full score of 100%. In total, 58.3% of the population had inadequate knowledge. Average scores of doctors, dentists and nurses were 53.5, 43.3 and 38.4% respectively. Doctors, participants with prior training in BLS and those with 6 to 10 years after graduation were found to be a significant predictor of adequate knowledge, on multivariate analysis. Conclusion Even though knowledge of BLS in doctors is better than that of dentists and nurses, overall knowledge of health care professionals is extremely poor. Present study highlights the need for a structured training of BLS for health care workers.

Background: Healthcare professionals are expected to have adequate knowledge of basic and advanced cardiac life support to revive unresponsive patients. Little is known about that in health care professionals in Saudi Arabia.Methods: we conducted this study in the joint program of family medicine to evaluate knowledge of physicians about basic life support, and to identify factors associated with the differences in their knowledge. Through a cross-sectional analytic study, all physicians in the Joint Program of Family Medicine in Jeddah were included in the study. For collection of data, a validated self-administered questionnaire was used.Results: Out of responding physicians (n=150), females constituted 117 (78%), their mean age accounted for 27.3±2.2 years. all physicians (99.3%) reported that they had attended BLS courses before. Out of a maximum of “13”, the mean score of correct answers accounted for 6.2±1.6, only 18.7% of the physicians achieved above average scores. Only qualification had statistically significant impact on the level of knowledge, the average score percentage was higher among those who have MBBS qualification only compared to their colleagues who have postgraduate degrees (48.3%±11.57% vs 39.2%±13.78%) p<0.05.Conclusions: Physicians in the Joint Program of Family Medicine have deficient level of knowledge about BLS, despite of their previous BLS training. Frequent training is strongly recommended to sustain adequate level of knowledge about BLS.

Abstract Background Sudden cardiac arrest considers one of the most leading cause for death in all over the world. It is important for all medical students to train basic life support. This study evaluated the awareness of basic life support among medical students. Methods An electronic questionnaire based cross sectional study was conducted in November 2020 among 2114 medical student in Syria, Iraq and Jordan. We evaluated BLS skills according to mean score. A chi-squared test was used to determine if there were differences between those who attended a basic life support course and those who did not. Results 1656 of the participants (78.3%) stated that they did not attend a basic life support course. There was a significant difference between the participants from different countries where the mean score in Syria, Jordan and Iraq was 18.3, 24.3 and 18.8 respectively (p < 0.05). The participants were divided into 3 level according to total score; low (0–12), moderate (13–24) and high (25–37). In total, 18.3%, 72.8% and 8.9% of participants had high, intermediate and low level respectively. Conclusions The overall knowledge of basic life support among medical students is not adequate and need significant improvements. This study showed that an attendance a basic life support course previously had an effect on knowledge level. Hence, there is an urgent need to apply basic life support courses into the pre-clinical stage at universities.

Background: Basic Life Support (BLS) aims to maintain respiration and circulation in the cardiac arrest victim and involves a major focus on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with minimal use of ancillary equipment. The raised standards of care demand that knowledge about BLS/ CPR be updated and include the lay persons as well as medical experts who have the potential to become the teachers of the skill. The objective of the study was to describe the knowledge and attitude of medical personnel (nurses and doctors) towards BLS/ CPR. Methods: This cross sectional study was done among the doctors and nurses working in Department of General Practice and Emergency Medicine, BPKIHS, Nepal after ethical approval. A pre-validated questionnaire (Shrestha et al, WJEM, 2012) with pre-structured questions was used for assessing the knowledge and attitude. Attitude was measured using 5 point Likert. Designation, previous training and demographics were used as describing variables. For data recording and statistical analysis; Microsoft Excel, SPSS 11 and EPI Info were used. Results: Total number of sample size was 84 medical personnel working in emergency department (consultant 12, junior resident 16, house officer 18, and senior nurse 3 and staff nurse 35). Nine (11%) respondents answered more than 10 questions, 57 (68%) answered 6-10 question and 18 (21%) answered less than 5 question. Average mean score (total 15) was 7.40 (SD 2.32, 95% CI 6.90-7.90).Mean score of the positive attitude (total 15) to CPR was 11.1807 (2.43, 10.65-11.71). The mean score for reluctance (total 5) to perform CPR was 3.25 (consultants and those who were certified in BLS or taken BEC course in the department had maximum score in knowledge (p<0.001). Higher positive attitude score to BLS/ CPR was associated with an increasing age strata (p 0.001), senior designation (p 0.001), BLS course (p 0.048) and BEC department course (p 0.009). Conclusion: Knowledge in BLS/ CPR was average. CPR/ BLS training and frequent assessments are recommended at our hospital.

ABSTRACT Introduction According to the World Health Organization, heart disease is the world's largest killer claiming 17.5 million lives every year. Every 29 seconds, an Indian dies of heart problem. It is important that every member of our community including dental practitioners be trained in high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as it is a basic medical skill, which can save many lives if implemented timely. Aim The aim of the study was to determine basic life support (BLS) knowledge, awareness, and attitude among clinical dental students (III and IV year students), interns, and postgraduate students in the dental colleges of Davangere city, Karnataka, India. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted by using a close-ended, validated questionnaire comprising 17 questions pertaining to demographic details, knowledge, awareness, and attitude toward BLS among clinical dental students in Davangere city. Descriptive, chi-squared test and Logistic regression were used to analyze the data using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20. Results After excluding the incomplete response forms, the data were analyzed for 495 responders with a response rate of 96.6%. In the present study, only 23.2% of the responders answered that the rate of chest compression is 100/minute in adults and children and 62.2% of the students were not aware of Heimlich maneuver. About 68.5% students had not attended previous BLS workshops. Conclusion The present study highlights that the overall knowledge, awareness, and attitude among dental students regarding BLS is not satisfactory in Davangere. This study emphasizes the fact that undergraduate course in dentistry must be regularly updated on the knowledge and skills regarding BLS along with practical courses. Background: Coronavirus (COVID-19) is an infectious disease which begins to spread rapidly in various parts of the world including India. The health care professionals play a pivotal role in preventing or managing this disease so it is very essential for them to have an adequate knowledge, attitude and practice in tackling the disease. Aim: This study aims to evaluate the preparedness to tackle coronavirus and its risk perceptions among health care professionals in Chennai city, India. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 133 health care professionals in Chennai city. A sample of 67 medical and 66 dental professionals were selected from various hospitals in Chennai city based on the simple random sampling method. The questionnaire consists of 33 items regarding knowledge, attitude and practice towards coronavirus (COVID-19) and its risk perceptions among medical and dental health care professionals were obtained. The data was analyzed by using chi square test. P value <0.05 was considered to be a statistically significant. Results: The statistically significant difference was found regarding knowledge of symptoms, diagnosis of coronavirus among medical and dental professionals (p=0.0005). There was a highly significant difference was found among medical professionals regarding about the coronavirus WHO guidelines and proper facilities in treating coronavirus between medical and dental professionals (p=0.0005). The risk perceptions of medical professionals towards coronavirus was found to be statistically significant when compared to dental professionals (p>0.0005). Conclusion: The medical professionals have an adequate knowledge, attitude, practice and risk perceptions towards coronavirus when compared to dental professionals. Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) is a global health problem and poses challenges in various fields, including education. Some training programs such as Basic Life Support (BLS) training need to adapt to new policies, which are physical and social distancing. Blended learning by combining face-to-face with online training, may help achieve BLS competencies for health care professionals, including nursing students. This systematic review was conducted to explore blended learning effectiveness in BLS training for nursing student populations. The electronic search strategy was conducted from PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane for the years 2010 to 2020 with full text in English. This review followed the PRISMA guidelines. The initial search yielded 240 studies, and six of those studies were eventually included. The results reported there were three blended learning models appeared, including face to face learning combined with e-learning website, combined with video-based, and combined with computer-based simulations. With an intervention duration of four hours to two weeks, there was an indication of several improving outcomes, including skills, knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, problem-solving abilities, and willingness to perform resuscitation. Furthermore, the skill outcome is significantly more effective in blended learning of face-to-face models combined with the e-learning website and combined with computer-based simulations. The knowledge outcome parameter likely is the most effective from all of three blended learning models. These findings imply that BLS training needs to use blended learning models by modifying the training modules, facilities, and infrastructure as consideration.   Keywords: Basic life support, blended learning, nursing students, systematic review

Abstract Background The aim of this manikin study was to evaluate the quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) with restricted patient access during simulated avalanche rescue using over-the-head and straddle position as compared to standard position. Methods In this prospective, randomised cross-over study, 25 medical students (64% male, mean age 24) performed single-rescuer CPR with restricted patient access in over-the-head and straddle position using mouth-to-mouth ventilation or pocket mask ventilation. Chest compression depth, rate, hand position, recoil, compression/decompression ratio, hands-off times, tidal volume of ventilation and gastric insufflation were compared to CPR with unrestricted patient access in standard position. Results Only 28% of all tidal volumes conformed to the guidelines (400–800 ml), 59% were below 400 ml and 13% were above 800 ml. There was no significant difference in ventilation parameters when comparing standard to atypical rescuer positions. Participants performed sufficient chest compressions depth in 98.1%, a minimum rate in 94.7%, correct compression recoil in 43.8% and correct hand position in 97.3% with no difference between standard and atypical rescuer positions. In 36.9% hands-off times were longer than 9 s. Conclusions Efficacy of CPR from an atypical rescuer position with restricted patient access is comparable to CPR in standard rescuer position. Our data suggest to start basic life-support before complete extrication in order to reduce the duration of untreated cardiac arrest in avalanche rescue. Ventilation quality provided by lay rescuers may be a limiting factor in resuscitation situations where rescue ventilation is considered essential.
