Ecological corridors are territorial strips that aim to reduce the impacts of fragmentation of ecosystems, restoring the interconnection between them, in order to facilitate the movement of species, enabling seed dispersal and gene exchange between isolated populations. The relevance of the theme lies in the contribution to sustainable urbanism, aligning with biophilia, with benefits for living beings, including humans, with better walking conditions, thermal and psychological comfort. The general objective of the work was to delineate an urban ecological corridor in the continental portion of the city of Vitória/ES, in order to connect three isolated Environmental Protection Zones and benefit their essential occupants: the human species, the flora and the fauna. Exploratory studies and field visits were conducted, supported by Urbanism and Ecology literature, based on the definition of the connection axes and the recomposition of road profiles. The result achieved is an ecological corridor adapted to the existing roads, from the intensification of forestation and the implementation of gantries and elevated walkways for animal crossings. The insertion of aerial crossings and biodiversity corridors will bring a differential to the quality of life and ecological diversity for the local population.

This paper examines the existing in the Russian Federation approaches to assessing the quality of the urban environment, the concept of the quality index of the urban environment; the analysis of indicators for calculating the quality index of the urban environment and the factors that form the ecological well-being of the urban environment for the local population has been carried out. The territory of the northern industrial hub of Volgograd was chosen as the object of research, in particular, the zone of influence of the ferrous metallurgy enterprise AO “VMK ‘Krasny Oktyabr’”, which has a historically specific location relative to the functional zones of the city. The analysis of the results of monitoring the content of mobile forms of heavy metals in the soil cover, carried out by the method of atomic absorption spectrometry, and the assessment of the general life state of tree green plantations in the territory of the sanitary protection zone of the enterprise based on the enumeration of trees is presented. The identified zone of influence of the enterprise, taking into account the presence of additional sources of pollution of the soil cover and MPC of metals, instead of their background concentrations, extends for 3.5–3.7 km from the border of the enterprise in the form of elongated areas of increased concentrations. Cartographic visualization reveals the presence of two clearly pronounced foci of pollution located to the west of the existing SOC of the enterprise. When assessing the general condition of trees, it is also possible to recognize the worst territory of the test plots located to the west of the operating TWCs in accordance with the directions of the prevailing winds. The data obtained confirm the feasibility of organizing regular monitoring of the soil cover and the state of green forests in the city as one of the directions for assessing the quality of the environment and taking these indicators into account when calculating the quality index of the urban environment.

Since the 1980s, a wide range of physical and non-physical interventions, including megaprojects and flagships to small-scale projects and temporary usage, are prescribed as catalysts for urban regeneration. The strategy of utilizing urban catalysts as a tool for urban renewal has been encouraging by many city authorities through specific subsidization and privileges. However, there is no correct and precise definition of the tools and the qualities they should provide as their impacts. Besides, some criticize the catalytic projects due to their unsustainable, unjust, and destructive consequences.  This paper intends to provide a more comprehensive definition of urban catalysts by reviewing the existing literature. The research has been done through a deductive and inductive approach to reach the principal dimensions and criteria for catalytic projects. It uses a series of potential projects and interventions in the City of Tehran (16 projects and practices) as case studies to check the dimensions and criteria and the quality of each project as catalysts. The quality of the selected case studies was ranked through expert judgment and checklist method. The findings show the cases' rank on how their catalytic impacts comply with sustainable development goals. According to the results, seven criteria (environmental sustainability, context-based development, pattern making, branding, social quality of life, economic prosperity, and market adaptability) are essential to ensure the sustainability of catalytic impacts of catalyst projects.

Environmental analysis and zoning were carried out for management purpose of the Longines Malinowski Municipal Park (LMMP). With an area of 24.85 ha, this urban park includes a patch of sub-tropical humid forest, completely surrounded by residential and commercial areas in the City of Erechim, Rio Grande do Sul State,Brazil. Landscape features derived from aerophotogrametric maps, based on the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS-IDRISI), resulted in several thematic maps, through which a proposal of environmental zoning was perfomed, observing the definition of five zones of use. The environmental diagnosis identified several types of activities potentially harmful to the biodiversity of the LMMP and city's environmental quality. The implementation of a management plan would be essential to maintain and preseve this urban park, aiming to ensure its participation in the urban quality of life.

The city of Lima does not have enough green areas. The origin and the aim of the green areas and parks is diverse, in this way we can identify a profile and propose a typology for parks. The tree species and their distribution have a correspondence with the decade their creation. Two spaces—one in the quarter of Chorrillos and the other in Villa El Salvador—have been analyzed. The distribution of the green areas and quality of the parks has been defined. The existence and distribution of the ecological corridors will be described in the correspondent study areas. The proposal of a new ecological corridor that will be used as a connection for the bird life will be presented for the quarter of Chorrillos. Finally, new ecological corridors will by proposed for the Chorrillos quarter. A park will be implemented as a corridor for the quarter of Villa El Salvador.

AbstractIn a dynamic market, the city has become a main source of competitiveness, along with financial and economic benefits. Due to the processes of digitalization, a new concept has been developed, namely smart cities. This concept delivers economic and financial potential, not only to cities, but also to urban and local economic development. Therefore, to ensure the establishment of this concept, local government units, i.e., cities, need to have enough financial resources. In addition, the fiscal capacity of their local budgets should be sufficient. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the fiscal capacity of large cities in Croatia over the 2016-2018 period, as well as to present the financial support through funding schemes for the establishment of smart cities. After calculating the level of fiscal capacity of large cities, the analysis revealed interesting results. Only four large cities (Split, Rijeka, Zadar and Pula) achieved positive fiscal capacity in the observed period. This provides evidence of fiscal performance and fiscal capacity for the establishment of smart cities. This concept will enhance the quality of life, stimulate economic growth, sustain local government budgets and create new value for both investors and the local population.

Water is an indispensable asset for humankind. Although it is renewable, it is finite, that is, it is exhaustible. Due to the need and the quantity of water for the development and progress of human activities, there is a significant increase in water consumption year after year in Brazil. Bathing is an instrument for checking the parameters that determine whether the water of a particular beach is of good quality for primary contact recreation. The objective of the research project was to verify the water quality of the artificial bathing beach of Porto Real, in the city of Porto Nacional in the state of Tocantins. This project prioritized the bathing water for use by the local population. The methodology to be employed will rely on an experimental research, according to Colilert's technique, and also according to the methodology adopted by Standard Methods (APHA 2005), with analysis of primary and secondary water quality data. The monitoring information was carried out in partnership with the Federal Institute of Science and Technology of Tocantins - IFTO. The results showed satisfactory E. coli and pH values for the Porto Real Beach bathing resort, according to parameters established in the CONAMA Resolution No. 274/2000.

The article examines a still unexplored issue of collective help to Jews during the Holocaust in Kremenchuk. Based on theoretical developments in Holocaust studies, it attempts to investigate the phenomenon of collective help to Jews in the context of the genocidal process unfolding in the city and the vicissitudes of the war in the region. Therefore, the author considers the process of changes in the “solution of the Jewish question” at the time of the Wehrmacht’s entry into Kremenchuk, as well as the dynamics of the Holocaust in the city. The author outlines the definition of “collective help” and offers its analysis through the prism of the activities of both non-Jews and Jews. In this regard, the article analyzes possible ways to obtain information by the local population about the genocide of Jews, as early awareness of the situation could provide more opportunities for action. The author reviewed the available historiographical works on the topic of helping Jews during the Holocaust, collected and systematized the available mentions of assistance to Jews in Kremenchuk, which can be qualified as acts of collective help, and described the specifics of the source base. For the first time, the article considers the actions of Synytsia-Verkhovsky, the first mayor of Kremenchuk under Nazi rule, and underground fighters from the organization “Patriot of the Motherland” under the leadership of Taras Zhvania as acts of collective aid. The article outlines what types of collective help were provided to Jews during the Holocaust in Kremenchuk. In addition, it assumes that during the collective assistance of the members of the organization “Patriot of the Motherland” infrastructural cooperation was established (the First City Hospital, the Red Cross, apartments of members of the underground organization). In this way, the author seeks to complement the historiographical contributions that have discussed help to the Jews of Kremenchuk very briefly and only from the viewpoint of individual acts.

Background Many studies of birds have indicated that offspring sex ratios can vary with environmental and parental traits. On the basis of long-term research, we first evaluated the possible influence of parental age difference and brood characteristics on offspring sex and fitness in multi-brooded Blackbirds Turdus merula. Methodology The study was conducted in the city-centre Stefan Żeromski Park in Szczecin, NW Poland, where the local population of Blackbirds has been studied since 1996. Data on the offspring sex and fitness were collected in five years, 2005–2007 and 2016–2017. During the breeding season we inspected the study area to locate the pairs’ territories and to track their nests and clutches. Results We found that the overall sex ratio did not differ statistically from 50:50, but that younger females bonded with older mates did tend to produce more sons, probably because of the greater fitness of male descendants. Accordingly, the sons’ breeding success increased with the father’s age, but this relationship was close to non-linear, which may indicate that the transgenerational effect of paternal senescence could negatively affect progeny fitness despite the high-quality of older fathers. Older females mated with younger males produced more daughters, which could have been due to the lesser attractiveness of the males and the mothers’ poorer condition caused by accelerated senescence. We found that neither offspring hatching sequence nor hatching date or clutch sequence were significant for sex determination. Conclusions We consider that in our Blackbird population, parental age could make a more significant contribution to shaping offspring sex and reproductive success.

Ukraine has a sufficient amount of tourist resources and a powerful potential for its further development. For today, castle tourism, based on the use of fortification objects, is extremely attractive both for tourists and for attracting investment in its development. At present, the castles have found their new purpose: they have become museums, hotels, art galleries, restaurants, platforms for theatrical performances and musical concerts, various shows and performances. Ukraine is not the first time back to the problem of preserving its historical and fortification heritage. The seriousness of this issue is determined by the fact that the castle heritage is in an extremely neglected state. Another negative phenomenon is still the indifference of the population to their own history and the current state of the tourist infrastructure. Ukrainian society should be the engine of practical changes. Historical monuments are destroyed, and sometimes the local population dismantles locks for building materials. But it should also be noted that Ukraine has all the possibilities and conditions for the development of castle tourism. Of course, there is definitely a lot of work to improve the conditions and quality of service, but the components of the success of the development of this area in the country go along with the preservation of natural landscapes, accessibility of the area, advantageous infrastructure, interesting tourist sites and facilities, the image of the state and a significant contribution of funds to country budget. The potential of castle tourism is amazing and needs to be developed. The subject of the research is the use of the castle-palace complex in tourism. The purpose of the research is an analysis of the current state and definition of prospects for the use of the castle-palace complex in Ukraine, first of all in the industry of hotel and restaurant business. Tasks: to highlight the main problems and prospects for the development of the castle tourism, to formulate the strategy of using the castle heritage of Ukraine. The scientific methods are a system analysis, a structural-genetic synthesis and a direct analysis. As results this study found the main directions of development of the castle tourism, the impact of this type of tourism on the country's economy and the ways of attracting investment for the development of castle-hotel business in Ukraine. The authors conclude due to the development of the castle tourism, the economy, which has a significant impact on the development of the state in general and on the standard of living of the population, is growing intensively. In the future, the establishment of a competitive market for services by upgrading the existing vacation infrastructure and the spread of small forms of recreation can significantly increase the number of tourists in our country, which will improve the economy and the quality of life of the population. It will also help create a new tourism infrastructure, increase the share of inbound tourism, which will positively affect the development of transport, accommodation and catering, retail, construction, communications, and insurance.
