Though the fat person in the eighteenth and nineteenth century culture usually represented wealth and prosperity, or by extension, either literally or metaphorically, greed and avarice, there was one situation in which fat people themselves were mocked and shamed. Extremely fat people were seen as a form of human grotesquery. They serve as a spectacle of oddity in fairs, circuses, vaudeville and most recently on television programs such as ‘The Biggest Loser’. In all this the fat man suffers the greatest humiliation. His body is at once exposed and undignified. The negative effect that these freaks shows had on viewers who themselves were fat, or those who feared becoming fat, or certainly on those who were themselves the object of ridicule. The stigma in this case, however, is one of oddity and uniqueness. What is clear from the historical documents, however, is that the connotations of fatness and of the fat person- lazy, gluttonous, greedy, immoral, uncontrolled, stupid, ugly, lacking in will power, primitive- preceded and then intertwined with explicit concern about health issues. Fat bodies as Foucault would say, is considered as hegemonic knowledge or stereotypes which are enforced by the authorities. Thus body size and weight can be seen and explored as a set of social meanings. The desire to raise one’s social status is a key motivational force for dieting. Creation of hegemonic understanding of fatness as a problem and discursive and other practices that aim at determining normalcy can be justifiably seen along the lines Foucault’s notion of power and specifically those of Biopower and Biopolitics. According to Foucault these power works through discourses and hegemonic knowledge.

Grave spaces within Yoruba (Nigeria) societies are not just ordinary symbols, and they constitute “other place” used to meet individuals’ physical and social needs. This study examined how residential grave spaces within Yoruba social structure are used by them in meeting their day-to-day needs. Drawing from symbolic interactionism theory, and data gathered from Ekiti-Yoruba culture, this study investigates how community members define and utilize the place of graves from traditional to modern society in meeting their needs. Findings revealed that during the precolonial society, grave spaces served religious and endearment purposes. While still retaining these functions in modern era, the functions have increased to security, protections, and power play due to the hurdles posed by modernity. The article concluded that the practice may continue in spite of its opposition by policy makers and orthodox faiths.

Abstract We experimentally miniaturized freshly laid eggs of the Chinese cobra Naja atra (Elapidae) by removing ∼10% and ∼20% of original yolk. We tested if yolk-reduced eggs would produce 1) normal-sized hatchlings with invariant yolk-free body mass (and thus invariant linear size) but dramatically reduced or even completely depleted residual yolk, 2) smaller hatchlings with normal-sized residual yolk but reduced yolk-free body mass, or 3) smaller hatchlings of which both yolk-free body mass and residual yolk are proportionally reduced. Yolk quantity affected hatchling linear size (both snout-vent length and tail length) and body mass. However, changes in yolk quantity did not affect incubation length or any hatchling trait examined after accounting for egg mass at laying (for control and sham-manipulated eggs) or after yolk removal (for manipulated eggs). Specifically, yolk-reduced eggs produced hatchlings of which all major components (carcass, residual yolk, and fat bodies) were scaled down proportionally. We show that snakes cannot use yolk reserves to maximize their body size at hatching. Furthermore, our data also suggest that the partitioning of yolk in embryonic snakes is species-specific.

This article experiments with some of the insights provided by the work of Deleuze and Guattari as a move towards deterritorializing fat bodies. This is necessary because in contemporary Western society the fat [female] body is positioned and frequently experienced as lacking in social, cultural and political value and as being in need of surveillance and control, not least by the neo-liberal ‘self’. This article is a response to Deleuze and Guattari's plea to ‘think differently’, in this case about fat and weight loss. The article eschews the paradigmatic form of the traditional academic research paper, adopting a semi autoethnographic approach to present an analysis of my engagement with the Biggest Loser (diet) Club. Thinking through rather than about the body it focuses on embodied experiences of fat and the on-going process of cutting that body down to ‘normal’ size. By utilising two central concepts in Deleuzoguattarian thought – ‘becoming’ and the ‘body – without – organs’ (BwO) - I seek to demonstrate the embodied, theoretical and ethical potential of utilising Deleuze and Guattari's work to explore fat and weight loss and how this might productively serve to deterritorialize contemporary discourses which stigmatise fat bodies.

Herein we describe the reproductive biology of a population of the Amazon Lava Lizard (Tropidurus torquatus (Wied-Neuwied, 1820)) from Corrientes, northeastern Argentina (Wet Chaco). We describe the male and female reproductive cycles, minimum body size for adults, reproductive output, mean relative clutch mass, fat body cycles, and sexual dimorphism. Our results were compared with data on the reproductive biology of Brazilian populations of T. torquatus and congeneric species. In Corrientes, males of T. torquatus exhibited a continuous reproductive cycle, but with annual variation of testicular parameters associated with spermatogenic activity. In contrast, females were reproductive only from winter to summer (July–February), laying at least two clutches each of six eggs, on average, per reproductive season. The relative clutch mass and egg size values in Corrientes were the highest reported for the species. The annual cycle of energy storage (as fat bodies) was inversely correlated with reproductive activity in both sexes. Males differed from females in snout–vent length, head size, interlimb length, and tail length. We observed interpopulational differences in relative clutch mass, egg volume and mass, incubation period and hatching time, and the minimum body size for sexual maturity probably as a result of phenotypic plasticity or adaptation to local environmental conditions and likely both.

Egg-weight apportionment patterns and chick survival were investigated in two-egg clutches of Caspian terns(Sterna caspia) in the Great Lakes. First-laid eggs (A eggs) were typically heavier than second-laid eggs (B eggs) and hatched an average of 1.8 days earlier. The A-egg fraction of total clutch weight increased with total clutch weight. Increased egg weight did not increase the probability of hatching, but did increase the fledging success of A chicks: specifically, A eggs that produced fledglings were significantly heavier than those whose chicks did not fledge. No such relationship held for B eggs. The main effect of B-egg weight was in prolonging life: excluding those few that fledged, egg weight was correlated significantly with age at mortality. Chick mortality appeared to be due mainly to starvation and gull predation. We suspect that greater body size and (or) behaviour associated with body size helps chicks escape risk from gape-limited predators. The hatching of A eggs had a negative effect on the survival of B chicks, but the reverse was not true. B offspring may act as insurance against the loss of A siblings. The potential benefit to parents of investing more in B eggs appears to be constrained by sibling competition with A chicks, which often results in brood reduction. The pattern of egg-weight apportionment in eggs is interpreted as a parental response to the differences in the reproductive values of asynchronously hatching chicks.

Despite Library and Information Science’s engagement with other matters of social justice, nearly no scholarly attention has been paid to fat issues within the library. Through the critical lens of the author’s own experiences as a fat Library and Information Science scholar, a critical discourse analysis of online library furniture catalogues reveals the exclusionary ways in which they perpetuate fatphobic body size standards. Given that library spaces are often considered a cornerstone of modern democratic societies, and that librarianship claims to champion ideals such as universal access to information, the exclusion of fat bodies in library spaces is problematic.

We blend person perception work with queer appearance psychology to examine the relationship between body size and bisexuality. In an online survey (N= 472, Mage= 25.15, 63.8% women), we examined the specific traits associated with a range of computer-modelled bodies identified as bisexual. We found that average body sizes were perceived as most prototypical of both bisexual men and bisexual women, skinny and fat bodies were more associated with clusters of traits which contrast with common stereotypes about bisexuality. Additionally, we found that bisexual men were associated with increased masculinity and decreased femininity relative to bisexual women, and found a general, though nonsignificant trend such that bisexual men were perceived as having heightened androcentric desire relative to women. Finally, we found evidence for the role of typicality as a mediator of perceived prejudice; less prototypical bodies tended to be perceived as experiencing greater prejudice based on body size.

Aspects of the reproductive biology of a trogloxene population of the pickerel frog, Rana palustris (Anura: Ranidae), were studied at a cave on the edge of the Ozark plateau in Missouri. Sexual dimorphism in body size was marked; there was almost no overlap in adult body size ranges, and the ratio of mean adult female snout–vent length (SVL) to adult male SVL was 1.26. All males with SVL of >45 mm were sexually mature. Males showed a clear cycle of spermatogenesis, with a peak in midsummer and a decline in spermatogenic activity through autumn and winter. Minimum size at maturity for females was 59 mm SVL. Females completed vitellogenesis during the summer, before their arrival at the study site. Of 28 females above the minimum size at maturity, 27 contained egg clutches. Clutch size, clutch mass, and egg size (mass) show significant positive correlation with SVL. Mean (±SD) clutch size was 1759 ± 548. Fat bodies were present in both males and females in autumn, but were totally depleted before the animals emerged from hibernation. Trogloxene R. palustris do not diverge significantly from patterns of reproductive biology typical of other temperate zone Rana. Current or past patterns of cave use have had no detectable effect on reproductive characteristics of trogloxene R. palustris.

Abstract Background: The covid-19 pandemic is likely to cause mental health issues, especially for healthcare professionals. The aim of this study is to investigate levels of perceived stress, sleep disturbances and sense of family support among nurses in pandemic conditions. Methods: Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Family Support Scale (FSS) were administered in a sample of 150 nurses from different hospital departments during the COVID-19 pandemic. Individual and demographic data were recorded. Results: 120 women and 30 men completed the study questionnaires. Almost half of participants (49.7%) reported the presence of sleep difficulties and more than half (50.3%) experienced increased stress levels. Scores on AIS scale correlated positively with PSS scores (P<0.01), and nega­tively with FSS scores (P<0.01). A significantly negative correlation was observed between the PSS scores and the FSS scores (p<0.01). Regression model showed ‘scores on PSS scale’ and ‘years of work experience’ were significant predictors of ‘scores on AIS scale’, each explaining 43.6% and 2.3% of the variance. Scores on AIS scale’ and ‘scores on FSS scale’ were significant predictors of PSS explaining 43.7% and 9,2% of the variance . Conclusion: The study confirmed that working with COVID-19 patients has a negative effect on the sleep of nurses, possibly mediated by increased levels of stress. Family support, as a protective factor, appears to moderate the deleterious consequences of stress.

In almost all animals, physiologically low oxygen (hypoxia) during development slows growth and reduces adult body size. The developmental mechanisms that determine growth under hypoxic conditions are, however, poorly understood. One hypothesis is that the effect of hypoxia on growth and final body size is a non-adaptive consequence of the cell-autonomous effects of hypoxia on cellular metabolism. Alternatively, the effect may be an adaptive coordinated response mediated through systemic physiological mechanisms. Here we show that the growth and body size response to moderate hypoxia (10% O2) in Drosophila melanogaster is systemically regulated via the steroid hormone ecdysone, acting partially through the insulin-binding protein Imp-L2. Ecdysone is necessary to reduce growth in response to hypoxia: hypoxic growth suppression is ameliorated when ecdysone synthesis is inhibited. This hypoxia-suppression of growth is mediated by the insulin/IGF-signaling (IIS) pathway. Hypoxia reduces systemic IIS activity and the hypoxic growth-response is eliminated in larvae with suppressed IIS. Further, loss of Imp-L2, an ecdysone-response gene that suppresses systemic IIS, significantly reduces the negative effect of hypoxia on final body size. Collectively, these data indicate that growth suppression in hypoxic Drosophila larvae is accomplished by systemic endocrine mechanisms rather than direct suppression of tissue aerobic metabolism.
