In 2003, Estudio Urbano in partnership with master planner Leon Krier, proposed a new traditional town as an extension of Guatemala City: Ciudad Cayalá. Its goal is to create a humane, hospitable urban environment that fosters a strong sense of community, while generating local employment opportunities and a vibrant commercial and civic life. Paseo Cayalá is the first built quarter that is intended to serve as a model for future growth. It revives Guatemala’s unique architectural identity and offers a way of life radically different from the typically disconnected, car-oriented developments. The principle of mixed-use and programmatically-tuned architectural variety has laid the foundation for a robust emerging public realm. Paseo Cayalá celebrates local identity and has become a place of hope and happiness.

The research presented in this chapter explores a variety of objectives: first, what are the dynamics and associated requirements for initiating a new start-up composting business that would embrace the principles of Circular Economy? Secondly, is there a market for compost both in an urban environment and for farmers regionally in a development world economy such as Guatemala? With this, how can employment opportunities for at-risk youth from the most impoverished neighborhood in Guatemala City be created while adhering to the tenants of social sustainability? And finally, what were the requirements involved in making compost in the challenging high altitude climatic conditions of Guatemala City?


TechCreate is a relatively small makerspace, much like an open classroom, located in a mixed-use industrial park. It was founded as a for-profit space, with the intention to create a community of makers for the outer Dublin area. Because adult memberships have been slow to grow, the space has pivoted towards small-scale manufacturing services and, at the same time, provides educational services to youth in the community. While learning communities for adults are largely non-existent, the space works diligently to provide opportunities for youth to work in teams and in near-peer combinations to foster a sense of community. Most youth participants in the space start the experience with TechCreate by taking a six-week basic coding class and from there may choose to specialize in making by joining a making club for youth or may choose to take an intermediate level coding course and then join a coding club. This chapter explores TechCreate.

Nowadays the process through which the sandstone craft products are produced at North Singapadu Village has changed. The appearance of different types of popular sandstone craft products reflecting the local identity produced by the young craftsmen at North Singapadu Village shows this. Such products are different from the traditional sandstone craft ones in terms of form and aesthetic style. Globalization, ideology and technology have basically led to the change. The sandstone industry has become highly innovative. This present study uses the qualitative and interpretative method and the theories used are the theory of acculturation, the theory of deconstruction, and the theory of postmodern aesthetics.              The conclusion of the present study is that the form and process of innovation initially resulted from new ideas and concepts and the craftsmen’s paradigm. The main things which have been responsible for changing the traditional way of life into the modern way of life are formal education, tourism and modern technologies. Those who are positively and negatively affected by globalization are not only the capital owners and craftsmen but the villagers and consumers as well. The sandstone craft products at North Singapadu Village contain the meaning of creativity, the economic meaning, the commodificative meaning and the meaning of cultural change. The finding of the study shows that the craftsmen at North Singapadu Village have ignored the traditional concepts, the technique of producing the products, and the materials used. However, the sandstone craft products at North Singapadu Village do not get extinct but remain to exist and both domestic and foreign consumers are interested in them.

In the paper I analyse the ways in which a city, urbanism, city space and people living in urban environment are portrayed in Polish popular music, especially in the songs of Polish alternative bands of the 80. inthe 20th century. In popular music, the city is pictured in several ways, among which the most important is the use of words as song lyrics that illustrate urban way of life. The city should be treated as an immanent part of the rock music mythology present in the songs and in the names of bands. In the case of Polish alternative rock music of the 80.such elements are found in songs of such artists as Lech Janerka, Variete, Siekiera, Dezerter, Deuter, AyaRL. The visions of urbanism taken from their songs are the exemplifications used in the paper.

The article deals with an actual problem of fi nding techniques and methods to create a comfortable urban environment. The author emphasizes that in the existing conditions of intensive urban development greater att ention should be given to spatial concentration based on and more compact distribution of population in urban space. It is stressed that including mixed-use facilities into urban realm results in a signifi cant improvement of living environment qualitative characteristics. The author explores the world’s experience of designing tall mixed-use buildings and reveals modern trends in their construction.

In ancient Iran there was evidently a strong sense of existence after death, which was reinforced by Zoroaster's reform and his teachings about heaven and hell, so the life on earth came to be lived with the hereafter continually in mind. An orthodox Zoroastrian combines an appreciation of the good creation of Ōhrmazd, and an acceptance of his allotted tasks within it, with a conviction that this world is nevertheless only a halting-place, and that true life comes after death. The moral requirements of his faith make him self-reliant, bearing the responsibility for his own conduct and ultimate fate; yet there is also a striking sense of community, of a bond between all those of the ‘good religion’, united by their common purpose and way of life. This senṣe of community extends to a remarkable degree to the righteous dead, to those souls ‘who have overcome for righteousness’ (yōi ašāi vaonarə). Religious works from the remote past (notably the Farvardīn Yašt) show that the Irani and Parsi Zoroastrians are at one with their ancestors in being aware of the spirits of the departed, in wishing to please them, and in rejoicing at a sense of their continuing care and protection.

El estudio de las comunidades indígenas en la búsqueda de la descripción de sus sistemas normativos, en México, al menos, muestra que el tema de la propiedad es central para entender el contenido de estos sistemas. El pensamiento antropológico, en cambio, dejando de lado la estructura social, en este caso la no propiedad sobre la tierra, quiere encontrar la explicación de la normatividad propia de esas comunidades en el sentimiento de pertenencia a la comunidad. El análisis de las normas relacionadas con el control sobre la tierra muestra que ese sentimiento comunitario tiene que ser explicado al mismo tiempo, y eso solo puede hacerse a partir del estudio de las relaciones sociales propias de una sociedad agraria no capitalista. Por otra parte, no cabe dejar de decirse que el contenido de la normatividad comunitaria es lo que explica la pervivencia de la comunidad, y de igual manera explica la terquedad y la fuerza conque los sabios de esas sociedades insisten en la conservación de su modo de vida —es decir, de sus normas— para reproducirse como comunidades que intentan pervivir al margen de la sociedad capitalista, a la cual ven como enemiga de esa pervivencia. En suma, la propuesta dice: no se puede explicar el contenido de las normas observadas en las comunidades sin recurrir a las formas de control sobre la tierra. La actitud comunitaria, ese sentimiento de pertenencia, es una necesidad en orden con la reproducción de su vida, determinada primordialmente por el control sobre la tierra.   ABSTRACT The study of indigenous communities in the search to describe their normative systems, in Mexico at least, illustrates that the issue of property is central to understanding the content of these systems. Anthropological thought, on the other hand, leaving aside social structure, in this case non-ownership of land, wants to find the explanation of the particular type of regulation of these communities in “the sense of community belonging.” Analysis of the norms related to control over land illustrates that this community feeling must be explained at the same time, and that can only be done based on study of the particular social relations of a non-capitalist agrarian society. On the other hand, it cannot be emphasized enough that the content of community regulatory norms is what explains the survival of the community, and in the same manner explains the stubbornness and strength with which the wise persons of these societies insist on conserving their way of life —in other words, their norms— to reproduce themselves as communities intending to survive outside capitalist society, which they see as an enemy to that survival. In summary, the proposal states that the content of the norms observed in these communities cannot be explained without addressing the forms of control over land. The community attitude, that sense of belonging, is a necessity for the reproduction of their lives, primarily determined by control over land.

The development of local identity reflecting the local wisdom in the tourism development aims at maximizing the local values in developing the area.  This research-based paper describes the local wisdom and the development of local identity to promote cultural tourisme in Banyumas.  By using a qualitative method and a case study as its approach, the research reveals that the tourism development in the Banyumas regency has not focused on the development of its local identity yet.  Cablaka as the local identity of the Banyumas society has not become the way of life.  In this case, it has not absorbed into every sector of the Banyumas people’ lives, including the tourism sector.  The local wisdom in the tourism development is important for a society–including the Banyumas society–to get a better regional income.  It means the tourism develoment through implementating the local wisdom is able to improve the life condition of a society better than before.  So, the tourism development–especially promoting the cultural tourism–in the Banyumas regency does need to develop the local identity through its local values.

Sister Carrie is one of the greatest works composed by Theodore Dreiser, one of the representatives of naturalists in American literature at the beginning of the 20th century. Among numerous works of Theodore Dreiser, Sister Carrie enjoys a quite high literary status, and also meets with different comments after its publication. The novel mainly tells the personal experiences of a rural beautiful girl Carrie in the big city Chicago. Driven by natural desires and urban environment, she changes her social status and original values in the end. Naturalism is a scientific and literary approach employed here to depict the characters in the novel where a person's fate is decided or predetermined by impersonal forces of nature and environment beyond human control. The novel is an experiment where the author could discover and analyze the natural forces and survival laws that influence personal behaviors, emotion and fate. This paper introduces the origin, development and characteristics of naturalism in American literature, studies the effect of human weakness on their life, and makes clear the influences of environment on people’s way of thinking and way of life.
