The growing volume of text in print and digital media demands a mechanism for assessing the relevance of each material and determine interest, consumption priority or disposal of information. One way to contribute to this decision-making process is to build visual hierarchy. Taking it as an essential resource for information design, this article discusses the historical process by which text is no longer treated as a symmetrical and homogeneous element within the page margins and begins to be exploited asymmetrically and dynamically in New Typography. It is also presented the further systematization of this approach through the grid concept in the International Style. Such contributions, already incorporated into the graphical language adopted by information design, are essential for complex communication projects that require dynamism in consumption of content and articulation of multiple layers of information.

The growing volume of text in print and digital media demands a mechanism for assessing the relevance of each material and determine interest, consumption priority or disposal of information. Citizens' participation is a form of democracy in which citizens are part of the decision-making process with regard to the development of their society. In today's emergence of Information and Communication Technologies, citizens can participate in these processes by submitting inputs through digital media such as social media platforms or dedicated websites. From these different means, a high quantity of data, of different forms (text, image, video), can be generated. This data needs to be processed in order to extract valuable data that can be used by a city's decision-makers. This paper presents natural language processing techniques to extract valuable information from comments posted by citizens. It applies the Latent Semantic Analysis on a corpus of citizens' comments to automatically identify the subjects that were raised by citizens.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate cognitive aspects of Information Design that should be considered in the design of eHealth environments, taking into account the degrees of health literacy of the communities to which they are intended. The characteristics of eHealth, the relationships between health and technology and the studies in Information Design related to the thematic area related, in convergence with Information Science. The provision of health information in both analogue and digital media does not necessarily mean a change in self-care and prevention habits due to the different degrees of health literacy of the people who access it. There are specific aspects in the provision of health information on the Web that should be taken into account in the Design of eHealth environments. This type of information must be presented and represented according to criteria and guidelines specifically geared to these environments, which are derived from studies that consider the cognitive load and degree of health literacy required for the processing of certain information formats in the communicational process in this context. Certain factors, such as the lack of jargon and the format of the text, the use of graphic resources in the presentation and representation of information and audio-visual modalities require less cognitive effort in information processing and are therefore more appropriate for people with different levels of health literacy. We present as a result of a conceptual map with recommendations focused on the textual and graphic contents for the Information Design of eHealth environments.

Typographic elements have a huge impact on how designed mediums affect visual literacy. This paper reviews the principles, perspectives and approaches in the production and function of typographic design visual media (print and digital), with the aim to understand the relationship between typographic design on digital mediums, with the aim of examining its influence on people’s ability to communicate ideas, meaning and messages effectively, while reflecting on its commercial implications for brands and marketers. Research via survey and a focus group implied there is a positive association between literacy and the application of graphic design and typography on digital communication mediums. Findings revealed that type design complements textual word elements to enhance cognition and understanding of messages. The integration of visual and texts facilitates reading, and for digital mediums, both legible layout and engaging typefaces are equally crucial. Graphic typeface for digital media, from smartphones to e-texts for learning, should apply visual hierarchy arrangement to achieve these objectives. Findings show typographic design is an essential aspect of social communication today, and digital designers play a fundamental role to enable audiences to improve their economic and social participation and gain its full advantages.

This article aims to report the News Design teaching experience for Journalism students in which information design is starting point for the visual organization of journalistic content. It is carried out an exploratory research on the relationship between journalism and design, and the importance of knowing how to do information reach the public through visual hierarchy, as well as we also report exercises done with the students who deal with challenge of thinking and proposing visual solutions to narrate news. The ways of exercising visual thinking and information design are worked together in the scope of journalistic information and put in practice specific graphic resources of the news construction. It should be noted that the News design teaching encompasses challenges in an undergraduate course that still understands verbal information separate from its visual presentation.

This article appears in the Oxford Handbook of Sound and Image in Digital Media edited by Carol Vernallis, Amy Herzog, and John Richardson. This chapter develops a poetic perspective to analyze the unusual sound, image, and narrational structures of Inland Empire (David Lynch, 2006). A poetic perspective examines how a film is made (rather than trying to work out what it means). This chapter examines the decision-making process that has gone into the construction of the film’s complex aural and visual narrative world: specifically, the issue of how shots and scenes are joined in Inland Empire to create a complex ambiguous world of multiple intersecting layers.

The purpose of this article is to outline a decision-making process and highlight which portions of the augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) evaluation process deserve special attention when deciding which features are required for a communication system in order to provide optimal benefit for the user. The clinician then will be able to use a feature-match approach as part of the decision-making process to determine whether mobile technology or a dedicated device is the best choice for communication. The term mobile technology will be used to describe off-the-shelf, commercially available, tablet-style devices like an iPhone®, iPod Touch®, iPad®, and Android® or Windows® tablet.
