VIRTUAL MUSEUM AS THE NEWEST MECHANISM FOR PRESERVING HISTORICAL MEMORY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE

The development of information technology has entailed an active rethinking of the concept of cultural memory, the transposition of the actual formats, methods of interpretation and presentation to the audience, in particular through online technologies and museum activities. Museums, which are formed exclusively on the basis of online technology, become a qualitatively new cultural form of activity, which terms and conceptual nomenclature were built spontaneously, empirically in the process of practical activity. The purpose of this research is to analyze the concept and peculiar features of an online (virtual) museum as a multidimensional phenomenon of an interdisciplinary nature, and to propose their classification based on best practices of Ukrainian and international museums.

<p>In Egypt, the Center for Documentation of Cultural and Natural Heritage (CULTNAT) is treating cultural heritage in a holistic approach whether regarding the diversity of themes of cultural heritage or in the case of museums, the presence of objects in the different museums both within the country or abroad (a sort of global virtual museum). The establishment of CULTNAT marks a unique experience in the application of the latest innovations in the world of telecommunications and information technology towards heritage issues. CULTNAT’s main mandate is to document the various aspects of Egypt's tangible and intangible cultural heritage as well as its natural heritage.</p>

The article deals with the problem of collecting, preserving and researching the disappeared names of localities in the subjects of the Russian Federation, which for centuries have become an integral part of the historical and cultural heritage of the peoples of our country. The author believes that only a comprehensive analysis of the past oikonyms in nominational, lexical-semantic, historical-cultural, historical-ethnographic, local history aspects will restore the linguistic and cultural systems of different time periods in different microareals of the Russian Federation. The author comes to the conclusion that in order to preserve the historical memory of the disappeared names of geographical objects, local researchers need the support of regional state authorities and local self-government.

The seabed can be considered as the world’s largest museum, and underwater sites explored and studied so far provide priceless information on human interaction with the sea. In recognition of the importance of this cultural resource, UNESCO, in its 2001 Convention on the Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage, determined that objects/sites should be preserved in situ, whilst also advocating for public access and sharing. The implementation of these principles is not without difficulties. Some states have opened up underwater sites to the public—mainly through diving, yet the vast majority of the world’s population does not dive. In Malta, 7000 years of human occupation is reflected in and on the landscape, and recent offshore surveys show that the islands’ long and complex history has also left an indelible mark on the seabed. Besides difficulties related to their protection and management, these sites also present a challenge with regard to sharing and communicating. Recent advances in underwater imaging and processing software have accelerated the development of 3D photogrammetry of submerged sites and the idea for a virtual museum was born. The virtual museum, UnderwaterMalta, was created out of a need to share the plethora of underwater sites located on the seabed of the Maltese Islands. A multitude of digital tools are used to share and communicate these sites, offering visitors a dry dive into submerged sites that would otherwise remain invisible to the vast majority of the public. This paper discusses the basic principle of the sharing of underwater cultural heritage and the difficulties that beset the implementation of such a principle. A detailed explanation and evaluation of the methods used to gather the raw data needed is set in the context of the particular and unique working conditions related to deep water sites. The workings of this paper are based on first-hand experiences garnered through the recording of numerous wrecks over the years and the creation and launch of The Virtual Museum-Underwater Malta—a comprehensive virtual museum specifically built for “displaying” underwater archaeological sites that are otherwise invisible to the general public.

A national study conducted with the members of the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) database examined school counselors’ utilization of online technologies. The researchers also explored beliefs and practices and examined mitigating factors such as school counselors’ background, training, and experience. Training impacted counselors’ belief in the advantages of technology and their level of comfort. Females were significantly more likely to blur personal and professional boundaries irrespective of their training. The article discusses implications for school counselors.

Light Detection And Ranging or Laser Imaging Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) is not really a new technology. However, it does provide the data from which accurate models of the natural land surface completely stripped of buildings and vegetation can be derived. Interestingly for Cultural Heritage and Archaeology, most of the data is already freely available for research. This is certainly the case in the Netherlands, with the “Actueel Hoogtemodel Nederland 2”, or “AHN2”. The density of the measured points is at least 50 centimetres, which means that the remains of structures larger than one by one metre can be detected. As a result, many unknown structures have been discovered with it. However, these excellent results have blinded many Cultural Heritage and Archaeology practitioners to obvious mistakes when interpreting LiDAR data. This paper is intended to highlight best-practices for the use of LiDAR data by Cultural Heritage professionals.
