This article is devoted to socio-economic changes of the country, reforms of educational system, and new requirements in the field of foreign language education. The study of the methodology of teaching a foreign language as an applied linguistics is due to the fact that the methodology of the 1930s did not sufficiently define the specificity of a foreign language as a subject and did not develop a system of research methods.It is common knowledge that in pedagogy and methodology there is one object of study - processes of training, goals and objectives of training, education and the content of subjects. The practice of teaching a foreign language requires the development of problems of the content of teaching methods and techniques, its goals and objectives. The study of the problem of domestic didactics made it possible to reveal that in the Soviet methodological literature there is different coverage of the issue of teaching a foreign language during the studied period.

Claire Kramsch is Professor of German and Affiliate Professor of Education at the University of California, Berkeley, where she teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in Applied Linguistics and directs doctoral dissertations in the German Department and in the Graduate School of Education. She has written extensively on language, discourse, and culture in foreign language education. Two of her books, Context and Culture in Language Teaching (OUP, 1993) and The Multilingual Subject (OUP, 2009) won the Mildenberger Award from the American Modern Language Association. She is the past president of the American Association for Applied Linguistics and the current president of the International Association of Applied Linguistics.

The article observes modern trends in the development of foreign language education in a nonlinguistic university, using as an example the English Department for Science Students, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Area Studies of Lomonosov Moscow State University. Nonlinguistic university graduates need a fairly high level of foreign language communicative competence to be competitive in the modern labor market, which determines an everincreasing attention to teaching LSP (Language for Specifc Purposes). In 2001, the English Department for Science Students participated in the Russian-British project RESPONSE (Russian Education Support Project on Specialist English) aiming at a largescale study of the current state of teaching English for specifc purposes in Russian universities. Its fndings provide the baseline that serves a useful starting point for evaluation and monitoring the changes that have occurred in this area over the past twenty years. The main trend is the change of teaching methods and approaches: from the grammar-translation method inherited from the Soviet higher school to computer assisted language learning (CALL), communicative and competence approaches today. Active integration of information and communication technologies in the educational process makes it possible to form and develop the university's electronic information and educational environment. The MSU educational platform “University without borders” is based on Moodle LMS and used for distance teaching and learning. It ofers online educational materials, electronic textbooks and courses, for both degree programmes and supplementary education. The main digital tools that lecturers use to teach and supervise students' self-study are listed. The paper considers such areas of the work of the English Department for Science Students as development and application of interactive teaching methods and technologies; implementation of alternative forms of control, e. g. performing the fnal bachelor ESP assessment in the format of B2 CEFR exams or conducting an interfaculty scientifc student conference in English at the master's level; designing a professional development course in academic English for earth and life scientists; establishing an electronic library; compiling specialized corpora of medical and biological scientifc texts; promotion of multilingualism and multiculturalism.

Research within the domain of applied linguistics is at the moment lively and vigorous. Exciting work is being conducted in many settings by scholars trained in diverse areas of specialization. Certainly the inclusion of separate strands in (at least) psycholinguistics and sociolinguistics is now obligatory in most graduate programs in linguistics, bilingual education, foreign language education, or English as a second or foreign language, whereas the subjects were just beginning to be introduced two decades ago. The vitality of the Linguistic Society of America (LSA), the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) and other organizations bodes well for the strength of our discipline. Annual or semi-annual meetings of each of these groups are well attended and offer broad, stimulating programs for participants. These organizations directly or indirectly sponsor a range of scholarly publications widely distributed to a broad membership.

The article describes an experimental study aimed at determining the effectiveness of the use of media in the formation of foreign language communicative competence of future primary school teachers on the example of the discipline "Foreign language education: a foreign language with teaching methods." The concept of "media" is considered as objects, equipment and materials that ensure the functioning of the media information space in the form of audio, visual, audio and visual messages and are allocated by the teacher to organize an active process of learning a foreign language. It is noted that the choice of media was in accordance with the practical objectives of the training sessions. The procedural and effective components of the ascertaining and forming stages of the experiment are analyzed. It is noted that the developed diagnostic tools allowed to conduct diagnostic testing, to determine insufficiently formed foreign language communicative competence of future primary school teachers and to update the formative experiment to test the effectiveness of media in foreign language teaching. It is noted that the content of the discipline was updated with topics, issues related to the analysis, evaluation and use of various types of media, which contributed to the use of modern teaching methods and technologies. A comprehensive survey of students on their awareness of the impact of media on the effectiveness of learning a foreign language and the formation of their media skills is also analyzed. The dynamics of the levels of formation of foreign language communicative competence of future primary school teachers, that also affected the quality of student achievement is demonstrated in the paper.

Language has generally been characterized as a tool of communication between people, the mean by which man expresses his feelings and thoughts. It has been the subject of research from various angles and methodological standards that largely reflect the variety of dimensions from which it can be studied but also the prevailing analysis trends. Language is also seen as a social process, as a way of creating interpersonal relationships and expressing emotions. Therefore, integrated language teaching takes into account the social character of the language and relies on it. The linguistic and cultural diversity within the European Union has created new demands for multilingual European citizens. To meet the new requirements, it is necessary, educational strategies to be designed by those who actively involved in foreign language education in various countries in a new context, which will ensure the “productivity” of learning foreign languages in the implementation of foreign language education. There is an urgent need to promote the process of communicative teaching, so that the student who learns the specific foreign language transmits his own concepts, in the cases, interacting and trying to adapt to the common knowledge and even the linguistic ability of a person that this language is his/her mother tongue. The approach to the service of the communicative type of teaching emphasizes the communicative function of the language and tries to create in the students the opportunities for functional use of the language code, similar to those they will encounter outside the classroom. Students need to connect with each other to build friendly relationships within the classroom that becomes a student community. This effort also includes this paper, which introduces the model of socio-cognitive learning theory in the context of the communicative approach to the teaching and learning of foreign languages.

The National Research Centre for Foreign Language Education (NRCFLE) attached to Beijing Foreign Studies University (www.sinotefl.ac.cn/) is a key research institute in the humanities and social sciences in universities approved by the Ministry of Education (MOE) of the People's Republic of China. It was formally set up and approved in September 2000. After a decade of dedicated hard work, the centre has become an applied linguistics hub of research and training unrivalled in China, and co-hosted AILA2011, the 16th World Congress in Applied Linguistics in August 2011. The current director of the centre, WEN Qiufang, currently presides over the China English Language Education Association, another co-host of AILA2011. The centre publishes two journals, one of them, Foreign Language Teaching and Research, being pre-eminent in the field in every key journal index in China, as well as being the only journal in applied linguistics and foreign language education to feature in the MOE's 2010 Distinguished Journals in Humanities and Social Sciences.
