Abstract. A total of 25 flexural and 55 uniaxial compressive strength tests were conducted using landfast sea ice samples collected in the Prydz Bay. Three-point bending tests were performed at ice temperatures of −12 to −3 °C with force applied vertically to original ice surface, and compressive tests were performed at −3 °C with a strain-rate level of 10−6–10−2 s−1 in the directions vertical and horizontal to ice surface. Judging from crystal structure, the ice samples were divided into congelation ice, snow ice, and a mixture of the these two. The results of congelation ice showed that the flexural strength had a decreasing trend depending on porosity rather than brine volume, based on which a mathematical equation was established to estimate flexural strength. Both flexural strength and effective modulus increased with increasing platelet spacing. The uniaxial compressive strength increased and decreased with strain rate below and above the critical regime, respectively, which is 8.0 × 10−4–1.5 × 10−3 s−1 for vertically loaded samples and 2.0 × 10−3–3.0 × 10−3 s−1 for horizontally loaded samples. A drop off in compressive strength was shown with increasing sea ice porosity. Consequently, a model was developed to depict the combined effects of porosity and strain rate on compressive strength in both ductile and brittle regimes. The mechanical strength of mixed ice was lower than congelation ice, and that of snow ice was much weaker. To provide a safe guide for the transportation of goods on landfast sea ice in the Prydz Bay, the bearing capacity of the ice cover is estimated with the lower and upper envelopes of flexural strength and effective modulus, respectively, which turned out to be a function of sea ice porosity.

In the austral winter of 1979-80, a German Antarctic expedition was sent by ship to the Filchner and Ronne ice shelves in order to find a suitable site for the establishment of a permanent Antarctic station. During this expedition, investigations were carried out on sea ice in the Weddell Sea in order to evaluate the accessibility of the site for icebreaking ships which are intended to convey construction materials to the site and, later on, to supply the station annually.This paper covers the results of investigations on sea-ice conditions during the voyage along the ice shelves from Cape Fiske (at the base of the Antarctic Peninsula) to Atka Bay with emphasis on sea-ice conditions in the area about 100 km north-west of Berkner Island (Fig.1.). In addition to the drift conditions (speed, direction), a special feature of multi-year sea ice is described. The main part of the paper deals with mechanical properties such as flexural strength, uniaxial compressive strength and Young’s modulus of columnar-grained sea ice from the southern border of the Weddell Sea. Salinities and temperatures were measured over the depth of the ice and used for calculating the flexural strength and the Young’s modulus of the ice. The uniaxial compressive strength was investigated as a function of strain-rate, brine volume and temperature on a closed-loop testing machine on samples which were carried back from Antarctica to Hamburg.

Abstract The surface spectral albedo was measured over coastal landfast sea ice in Prydz Bay (off Zhongshan Station), East Antarctica from 5 October to 26 November of 2016. The mean albedo decreased from late-spring to early-summer, mainly responding to the change in surface conditions from dry (phase I) to wet (phase II). The evolution of the albedo was strongly influenced by the surface conditions, with alternation of frequent snowfall events and katabatic wind that induce snow blowing at the surface. The two phases and day-to-day albedo variability were more pronounced in the near-infrared albedo wavelengths than in the visible ones, as the near-infrared photons are more sensitive to snow metamorphism, and to changes in the uppermost millimeters and water content of the surface. The albedo diurnal cycle during clear sky conditions was asymmetric with respect to noon, decreasing from morning to evening over full and patchy snow cover, and decreasing more rapidly in the morning over bare ice. We conclude that snow and ice metamorphism and surface melting dominated over the solar elevation angle dependency in shaping the albedo evolution. However, we realize that more detailed surface observations are needed to clarify and quantify the role of the various surface processes.

<p>Sea ice affects the exchange of energy and matter between the atmosphere and the ocean from local to hemispheric scales. Salt fluxes across the ice-ocean interface that drive thermohaline mixing beneath growing sea ice are important elements of upper ocean nutrient and carbon exchange. Sea-ice melt releases freshwater into the upper ocean and results in formation of melt ponds that affect gas and energy transfer across the atmosphere-ice interface. The Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) provided an opportunity to follow sea-ice evolution and exchange processes over a full seasonal cycle in a rapidly changing ice cover. To this end, approximately 25 sea-ice cores were collected at 2 distinct sites, representing first-year and multi-year ice, to monitor physical, biological and geochemical processes relevant to atmosphere-ice-ocean exchange processes. Here we compare the growth and decay of first-year ice in the Central Arctic during the winter 2019-2020 to that of landfast first-year ice at Utqiaġvik, Alaska, from 1998 to 2016. Ice stratigraphy was similar at both sites with about 15 cm of granular ice on top of columnar ice, with a comparable growth history with a similar maximum ice thickness of 1.6-1.7 m. We aggregated the sea-ice bulk salinity and temperature profiles using a degree-day approach, and examined brine and freshwater fluxes at lower and upper interfaces of the ice, respectively. Preliminary results show lower sea-ice bulk salinity during the growth season and greater desalination at the ice surface during the melt season at the MOSAiC floe in comparison to Utqiaġvik.</p>

Abstract An ice cover impinging on a long straight structure is assumed to be under a condition of plane strain. A technique is described for performing plane-strain compression tests, and results are presented for the strain-rate dependence of strength. The plane-strain compressive strength of ice having anisotropic structure (columnar-grained ice) is at least two and a half times the uniaxial compressive strength, whereas the plane-strain compressive strength of ice having an isotropic structure (granular-snow ice) is at most 25% greater than the uniaxial case. The greater plane-strain compressive strength of columnar grained ice when the loading and confining directions are in the plane of the ice cover, can be attributed to its anisotropic structure, which leads to a different failure mechanism for the plane-strain case.

Soil–cement is an environmentally friendly road construction technique for base and subbase materials, which allows employing soils placed in the right-of-way of the road or in the surroundings, by improving its engineering properties. With this technique, it is possible to reduce the over-exploitation of quarries, the necessity of landfills and the pollutant gas emission due to the reduction of aggregate fabrication and transport. The manufacturing of soil–cement is generally controlled by means of the Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) test at seven days, according to the regulations of each country. Nonetheless, one of the properties that best defines the performance of soil–cement is the Flexural Strength (FS) at long term, usually at 90 days. The aim of this paper is to develop new equations to correlate the UCS and the FS at long term and the UCS at seven days and at 90 days. Obtained results validate the proposed models and, hence, the flexural strength can be predicted from the Uniaxial Compressive Strength at seven days, allowing, if necessary, correcting measures (recalculation or rejection) in early stages of the curing time to be taken.

ABSTRACT The behavior of crude oil and diesel oil in solid landfast sea ice has been examined under a variety of conditions by scientists in both the United States and the Canadian Arctic. Controlled oil releases under laboratory and actual field conditions have shown that oil spills in the landfast ice zone will tend to remain highly immobilized and achieve relatively thick concentrations. Such spills will encounter natural conditions that encourage accumulation of the oil at or near the ice surface, limit the areal extent of the oil, and help preserve certain physical and chemical characteristics that facilitate its control. A summary of these phenomena for oil in landfast sea ice reveals several important operational considerations for the development of specific Arctic countermeasure techniques. Such techniques for the containment and removal of oil in the landfast ice zone are presented, emphasizing the use of natural materials and conditions for their implementation.

The uniaxial compression test was performed on artificial freshwater ice with a precise control-temperature unit compression tester of ice under -5, -10, -15, -20 and-30°C temperatures and strain rates ranging from 10-8 to 10-2 s-1. The loading direction was parallel to ice surface. The results showed that the compressive strength was very sensitive to the strain-rate. The uniaxial compressive strengths reached the maximum value at the ductile-brittle transition region, and the region was gradually close to the lower strain-rate with the decreasing temperature of test. Both the strain-rate and uniaxial compressive strength dependences could be expressed in terms of power function in the relevant ductile range of strain-rate. The tests also revealed that failure stress of ice increases with decreasing of temperature at the same strain rate.
