Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is classified as a combination of risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), and postmenopausal women are specifically at an increased risk for MetS, in part due to the hormonal and metabolic changes that occur at the menopause transition. It is crucial to combat the components of MetS with appropriate lifestyle interventions in this population, such as exercise. This study aimed to examine the effects of a resistance band exercise training program in obese postmenopausal women with MetS. A total 35 postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to either a control group (CON, n = 17) or a resistance band exercise training group (EX, n = 18). Participants in the EX group trained 3days/week. Levels of blood glucose, insulin, homeostatic model of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), blood lipid profile, anthropometrics, and blood pressure (BP) were measured at baseline and after the exercise intervention. There were significant group by time interactions (p < 0.05) for blood glucose (Δ-4.5 mg/dl), insulin (Δ -1.3 μU/ml), HOMA-IR (Δ -0.6), triglycerides (Δ -9.4 mg/dl), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(Δ -10.8 mg/dl), systolic BP(Δ -3.4 mmHg), body fat percentage (Δ -3.0 %), and waist circumference (Δ -3.4 cm), which significantly decreased (p < 0.05), and lean body mass (Δ 0.7 kg) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (Δ 5.1 mg/dl), which significantly increased (p < 0.05) after EX compared to no change in CON. The present study indicates that resistance band exercise training may be an effective therapeutic intervention to combat the components of MetS in this population, potentially reducing the risk for the development of CVD.

Abstract Objectives The present study aimed to explore the effect of water-based rhythmic exercise training on fasting blood sugar (FBS), homeostatic model assessment (HOMA), insulin, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), and T4 in postmenopausal women with metabolic syndrome. Methods In this clinical trial, 31 postmenopausal woman with metabolic syndrome aged 69.16 ± 2.02 years were randomly assigned to an experimental (n=16) and a control group (n=15). The training program was composed of 12 weeks of water-based rhythmic exercise training performed intermittently for 60 min three times a week. Before and after training, blood was analyzed for glucose homeostasis, T4, and TSH. Data were subjected to analysis by paired t-test and covariance analysis at the p<0.05 level. Results The exercise training intervention reduced the FBS and insulin significantly (p=0.000). The growth hormone (GH) index was increased significantly only in the experimental group (p=0.037) whereas no significant variations occurred in the insulin-like growth factor-1 (p=0.712). It was also found that TSH and T4 change in the experimental group as compared to the pre-test. Conclusions Water-based rhythmic exercise training may improve blood glucose homeostasis, TSH, and T4.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a long-term community-based lifestyle intervention on the biochemical indicators and prevalence of metabolic syndrome among elderly adults. This was a randomized controlled trial in northern Taiwan from August 2013 to February 2015. Sixty-nine elderly adults participated in this study. There were three measurements. The experimental group participated in exercise and diet interventions. The control group participated in the exercise intervention. Repeated measurement and ANCOVA were performed to evaluate the effectiveness. After 18 months, body weight (1.06 kg), body mass index (1.21 kg/m2), waist circumference (3.32 cm), blood pressure, and prevalence (30.4%) of metabolic syndrome were significantly reduced in all subjects. There were significant differences in waist circumference and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol between the two groups. This intervention can lower the indicators and prevalence of metabolic syndrome. Exercise and diet interventions could promote further metabolic changes.

Summary People with metabolic syndrome (MetSy) are about twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease and over four times as likely to develop type 2 diabetes compared to subjects without metabolic syndrome. Waist circumferences (WC) and body mass index (BMI) are useful screening tools for making the diagnosis. MetSy has increased the health risk in primary care. The aim of the study was to evaluate the anthropometric indices for MetSy and determine which of simple anthropometric measurements is most closely associated with metabolic risk factors. The research included 264 individuals, of which 132 men with mean age (±SD) of 44.73 ±9.37 years and 132 women with mean age (±SD) of 46.67±8.44 years. Antropometric indicators were measured using standard protocols, without shoes and outerwear. BMI was calculated as weight/height2(kg/m2) ratio, as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). Blood pressure measurements were obtained with the subject in a seated position by using a standard mercury sphygmomanometer. Blood samples were obtained after a minimum of 12-h fast; the metabolic parameters (high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose) were analyzed by standard procedures. Analysis of the examinees’ medical records was also performed. Metabolic syndrome was diagnosed using the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) criteria. The analysis of the research results were performed using the Statistical Package for Social Science version 10.0 (SPSS 10.0 for Windows). The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was 44.7% in men and 43.2% in women. Normal-weight subjects of both sexes were significantly younger and had significantly lower blood glucose, total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides than overweight and obese subjects. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure values were significantly increased in parallel with increasing of BMI. For the whole sample, both anthropometric indices had significant associations with the other five components of MetSy. Waist circumference is a simple measure of adiposity most strongly associated with metabolic abnormalities. The results obtained in this study indicate that WC is a good indicator of health risk in women but not in men. Measurement of WC by BMI categories may indicate a person with an increased risk of development of chronic diseases.

Background/aim: Adropin is a peptide-structure hormone that plays a role in preventing the development of insulin resistance, which has been linked to obesity and metabolic regulation. The purpose of this study is to assess serum adropin levels and their relationship with metabolic parameters in psoriasis vulgaris patients both with and without metabolic syndrome (MetS). Methods: Fifty-three patients and twenty-six healthy controls were included in this study. Serum adropin levels, fasting blood glucose, fasting plasma insulin, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglyceride levels of all participants were analyzed. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to measure serum adropin levels. Results: Serum adropin levels in psoriatic patients without MetS were 2.94±0.56 ng/ml, in psoriasis patients with MetS were 2.49±0.77 ng/ml and were 3.37±0.71 ng/ml in control group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate adropin decreases in psoriasis patients as an independent predictor in terms of the presence of MetS. Conclusion: The serum levels of adropin in psoriasis patients were significantly lower in the presence of MetS, and this decrease was more prominent than in those without MetS. Adropin may be a responsible factor for metabolic disorders and the development of MetS in psoriasis patients. Key words: Psoriasis, metabolic syndrome, adropin

AbstractThis study investigated the antihyperglycemic and antihyperlipidemic effects of low-molecular-weight carrageenan (LC) on rats fed a high-fat diet. Wistar rats were divided into five groups: normal control group (NC), high-fat diet control group (HC), carrageenan-treated control group (CC), 1% LC group (1% LC), and 3% LC-groups (3% LC). Body weight, food intake, fecal weight, blood glucose, and serum lipid levels were measured. After 30 days, body weight significantly decreased in the LC-treated groups than in the HC group. Moreover, in the LC-treated groups, postprandial blood glucose, total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels decreased, whereas high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels increased. From this study, our data suggest that LC has antihyperglycemic and hypolipidemic effects when compared to carrageenan, likely related to its increased absorption due to its lower molecular weight.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) pathogenesis involves oxidative stress associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, which triggers integrated stress responses via various compensatory metabolic modulators like mitokines and hepatokines. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying the exercise-derived benefits with respect to mitokines and hepatokines (potential MetS biomarkers) are unknown. Thus, we investigated the effects of exercise training on MetS biomarkers and their associations with clinical parameters. In this single-center trial, 30 women with MetS were randomly assigned to 12-week supervised exercise or control groups (1:1) and compared with 12 age-matched healthy volunteers. All participants completed the study except one subject in the control group. Expectedly, serum levels of the mitokines, fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF21), growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF15), and the hepatokine, angiopoietin-like 6 (ANGPTL6), were higher in MetS patients than in healthy volunteers. Moreover, their levels were markedly attenuated in the exercise group. Further, exercise-mediated changes in serum FGF21 and GDF15 correlated with changes in the homeostasis model of assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and appendicular lean mass (ALM), respectively. Additionally, changes in serum triglycerides and ANGPTL6 were correlated with changes in leptin. Aberrant mitokine and hepatokine levels can be rectified by relieving metabolic stress burden. Therefore, exercise training may reduce the need for the compensatory upregulation of MetS metabolic modulators by improving gluco-lipid metabolism.

Abstract Background: Omentin-1 is a recently circulating adipokine that plays a crucial role in modulating insulin resistance and diabetes. We investigated the effect of eight weeks aerobic exercise training on serum omentin-1, insulin resistance and lipid profile in the smoker and non-smokers with normal-weight. Methods: Nineteen healthy men and twenty smoker men were randomly assigned into healthy control group (C), healthy exercise group (E), control smoker group (CS) and exercise smoker group (ES). Exercise groups participated in an 8-weeks aerobic exercise training program (three times a week, 45 min per session at 65%-80% of maximum heart rate). Serum omentin-1 and insulin values were determined by ELISA and HOMA-IR, glucose and lipid profile were measured at pre and post of the intervention. Paired Sample t-test, one-way analysis of variance (One-way ANOVA) and post-hoc Tukey test were applied to analyze the data (p<0.05).Results: Aerobic exercise improved both serum omentin-1 and high lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in the exercise groups (p<0.05). Also, Exercise training reduced insulin, blood sugar, HOMA-IR, total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels (p<0.05). Omentin-1 were significantly associated with insulin (r=-0.40, P=0.01), HOMA-IR (r=-0.38, P=0.04), TG (r=-0.40, P=0.01), TC (r=-0.49, P=0.02), LDL-C (r=-0.70, P=0.02) and HDL-C (r=0.55, P=0.03).Conclusion: The findings suggest that aerobic exercise-induced changes in omentin-1 in exercise trained smokers may be associated with the beneficial effects of exercise on reduced insulin and lipid profile.

Background: Metabolic syndrome is closely related to cardiovascular disease, and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal women is increasing rapidly. Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the association between the number of breastfed children and the risk factors for metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal women and to evaluate the association between metabolic syndrome and bone mineral density and body composition variables in postmenopausal women depending on the number of breastfed children. Methods: Data from KNHANES V-1 and 2 (2010-2011) were used, and a total of 939 PM women with 1 to 6 breastfed children aged 65-80 years participated in this study. We divided these women into three groups (group1 with 1-2, group2 with 3-4, group3 with 5-6) depending on the number of breastfed children. Result: In analysis of the associations between metabolic syndrome and its risk factors, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol was the most negatively strongly associated with group1 (OR=0.103 [0.047-0.225]), triglyceride showed the highest association with group2 (OR=7.760 [3.770-15.97]) and group3 (OR=7.668 [4.102-14.33]). The risk factors of metabolic syndrome except for high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and triglyceride was not associated with group1, while all risk factors of metabolic syndrome displayed a high association with group2 and group3. Conclusion: The findings of the present study suggest that the number of breastfed children is significantly associated with a greater number of risk factors of metabolic syndrome in postmenopausal women, and the association between metabolic syndrome and body composition variables may differ depending on the number of breastfed children.

Objective: To investigate the protective effect of repaglinide on rat with atherosclerosis. Methods: Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were divided into control, model, repaglinide, and metformin groups. In addition to the normal group, rats were given intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin and high-fat diet (HFD). Meanwhile, repaglinide or metformin was administrated to the treatment rats, respectively, for 4 weeks. Serum, plasma, liver, epididymal fat, and aorta thoracica were obtained to observe the protective effect of repaglinide on rat with atherosclerosis. Results: Compared to the control group, blood glucose was increased in the model group ( P < .05), while it was decreased in the drug-administered groups. In addition, the levels of endothelin 1, TG, TC, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, atherogenic index, liver index, and epididymal fat index were significantly increased, but the levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, plasminogen activator inhibitor 1, and antiatherogenic index were decreased significantly in the model group compared to the control group ( P < .05, respectively). And these effects were reversed by treatment with repaglinide ( P < .05, respectively). Conclusion: Our results suggested that repaglinide may regulate the formation of early atherosclerosis through the abovementioned mechanisms.

Abstract Objectives To investigate the association between KCNQ1 rs2237892, KLF14 rs972283, ZBED3 rs4457053, COL8A1 rs792837, and FTO rs8050136; gene polymorphisms; and T2DM in the male Palestinian population. Methods In this case-control study, 100 T2DM male patients and 100 control men were examined. The two groups were genotyped for the five gene polymorphisms using restriction fragment length polymorphism–PCR (RFLP-PCR) and allele-specific (AS-PCR) techniques. Body mass index (BMI), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), insulin (C-peptide), total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) were measured for all the study participants. The relation between the five gene polymorphisms, T2DM, and the measured clinical parameters were statistically analyzed using appropriate tests. Results Among the tested polymorphisms, significant associations were evident between KLF14 “GG” genotype (P = .014), FTO “CC” genotype (P = .043), and COL8A1 TC genotype (P = .015) and increased risk of T2DM. The KLF14 G-containing genotypes exerted a significant effect on lowering HDL-c (P = .026) and on elevating LDL-c (P = .045) and cholesterol level (P = .042) in the control group. The FTO “CC” genotype showed a significant effect on raising HbA1c level in the patients (P = .007). KCNQ1 (rs2237892 T>C), ZBED3 (rs4457053 A>G), and COL8A1 (rs792837 T>C) genotypes did not reveal significant effects on the tested parameters. Conclusion KLF14 “GG,” FTO “CC,” and COL8A1 C allele and “TC” genotypes are significantly associated with T2DM in the investigated population. KLF14 “GG” and “AG” have an association with the levels of HDL-c, LDL-c, and cholesterol in control subjects. The HbA1c level was significantly higher in patients with the FTO “CC” genotype. The study recommends confirming the obtained results on a larger sample and examining the association of other gene polymorphisms with T2DM in the Palestinian population.
