This paper discusses the intense presence of Eros figures in funerary monuments from the region of Macedonia during the roman period, evolving around the perception of death, the familial bonds and social structure that these monuments reveal. Eros, depicted either leaning on or holding an inverted torch, or sleeping on a rock, when placed upon graves is perceived as Eros funéraire. The funerary connotations of Eros figures often assimilate them with Sleep, Death, and the eternal sadness of Death. Especially when used in the funerary monuments of children, these figures accentuate the parental grief for the loss of their children. On the other hand, the childlike representation of Eros symbolizes the eternal beauty of youth and the parental hope that their deceased children will continue enjoying a happy afterlife.

This article investigates the narratives of people moving out of Islam in contemporary Europe. In particular, it focusses on the potential performance of non-belief in the form of speech. By critically examining the function of testimony in conversion and deconversion narratives, this article problematises the assumed boundaries of belief, non-belief, and the function of the performance of identity. It does so by investigating contemplations over private and public performances, since the performance of speech was thought to have different effects in both spheres. Whilst public discourses on leaving Islam and speaking freely were always weighed, in private these were related to familial bonds, love, and belonging. On the other hand, considering speaking out in public was often contextualised with reference to potential secularist appropriation of their stories as ‘native testimonial’. As such, my interlocutors show that testifying of one’s religious transformation in the case of moving out of Islam was neither central nor conditional. Speech was mostly considered a ‘step beyond’ not believing.

Abstract: We based on an attempt to approach two writings. On the one hand, a thoughtful literature piece, in the words of Evando Nascimento: Grande sertão: veredas; on the other hand, the Derridian writing that, in a deconstructed thought, points out heterodox possibilities of tradition interpretation. The scope is on the scene analysis in which a monkey - which was actually a man - is being devoured. Such situation draws a paradox in the Rosian writing. In parallel, Derrida’s analysis of devouring meat or human flesh scenes (symbolic or not), are both part of the West’s “phallogocentric” tradition. They draw an imperative of the social domination structure and the Rosian scene is analyzed as a problematizing inscription of the tradition that associates certain eating acts with the essentially defining constitution of what is the dominant human being. Derrida states in “Il fault bien manger” that the human social structure assumes and requires the “non-criminal ingestion of the corpse”, even the human one. The Rosian scene, however, comes out as a terrifying puncture in the social structure of the human subject, since, while enclosing the structuring gesture of virility and manhood configurations, it also contains the destructive gesture of human essence. Keywords: violence; food; devouring; ex-appropriation.

The Luis Arce’s victory in the elections of the 2020 in Bolivia, on one hand, could be perceived as an unexpected one due to an extremely adverse political situation for the Movement toward the Socialism (Movimiento al Socialismo, MAS), but on the other hand it’s still understandable and attributable to some circumstances of the moment, as well as to some fundamental characteristics of the Bolivian society with its political culture peculiarities, complex social structure and the factor of the indigenous ethnic voting. The indigenous ethnic voting factor seems to gain more importance in the Andean region, if we consider the recent elections in Ecuador and Peru in the 2021. Moreover, the return of the MAS to power in Bolivia shall be analysed within the other regional phenomenon which is the strengthening of the left forces positions, contrary to the mid-2010s forecasts about the “right turn” in the Latin America.

In the last two decades the comparative analysis of race relations in the U.S.A. and Brazil has been based on a conventional wisdom. It is the corollary of a larger conventional wisdom in the study of comparative race relations. The thesis is that systems of race relations in the Western Hemisphere are primarily of two types: bi-racial and multi-racial. The distinction is normally spelled out as follows. The U.S.A. is a prime example of a bi-racial system. In the prevailing logic of the US legal and social structure, individuals have historically been either black or white. In Brazil, on the other hand, there has been a spectrum of racial distinctions. At a minimum, Brazilian social practice has recognised white, black and mulatto. At a maximum, the phenotypical distinctions have become so refined as to defy analysis, or effective application for those who would discriminate.

Horse doctors of the Roman period were often, but not always, of low social status. On the one hand we hear of ueterinarii I mulomedici who were slaves or freedmen, but on the other hand the Greek-speaking Theomnestus was the friend of an emperor (probably Licinius), and accompanied him on an expedition: note particularly Hipp. Ber. 34.12, CHG I, p. 183.22 f. . Apsyrtus too, whatever his date, was a of some status.

We augment the survey-based studies of attitudes toward feminism with comparative, contextual perspectives emphasizing the importance of social structure and culture. In doing so, we are able to assess the relative merits of two very different structural theories. Most researchers implicitly assume a simple linear effect of social context on attitudes. On the other hand, some early works on American conservatism suggest to us that status discontent may be a better explanation. We explicate these two approaches and derive a series of testable hypotheses for each. We then examine the validity of these theories utilizing data from nine European nations.
