The Clown Group – Engineers without Borders (Knowledge Connections) is a group of clowns formed by Engineers and Engineering students. The theoretical basis of the Clown Group goes back to the origins of Jerzy Grotowski's “poor theater” (1933–1999). Concerning the use of music, theater and dance to present and promote the pleasure of art, the Group values the interaction with the public and does not worry about the structural elements commonly characterized by the theater as stage and lighting. In this way, the Clown Group promotes a Humanistic Formation of its members by providing a development in the capacity of communication, contact with the external community and also the satisfaction, by allowing the art to be spread in a simple and effective way. The objective of this work is to analyze the importance of Humanistic Training in the professional and personal development of Engineers and Engineering students, treating as a special case the Humanistic Training linked to the actions of the Clown Group – Engineers without Borders (Knowledge Connections). As a hypothesis, it is expected that the experience of members and ex–members of the Clown Group can be proven through their training and presentations over the years. In order to evaluate the personal and professional development of members and ex–members of the Clown Group during the training process, a qualitative research was carried out, via an applied questionnaire, in addition to a documentary research by observation, in which data were collected through analysis and observation of photos and documents of the Clown Group. In addition, Artificial Neural Networks were used to correlate the members and ex–members based on the two applied researches. The members and ex–members of the Clown Group have experienced a major break in introspection, significantly improving their way of communicating with society. The members and ex–members presented an improvement in the way they relate to each other in a team, a fundamental aspect of an Engineer's professional life. The Clown Group presents itself as a very important action for Humanistic Training and the professional and personal development of Engineers and Engineering students. The diffusion of art in the academic and external community promoted by the Clown Group also allows the deconstruction of the stereotype that the areas of Engineering and the Arts cannot coexist.

As we doctors are beginning to understand more and more about dementia, the public has become increasingly aware of the condition and in turn this has been reflected in the arts. This article discusses four books whose main focus is the experience of dementia, each written from an entirely different perspective: a novel giving a first-person account of dementia by the Dutch writer J. Bernlef; a biography of the famous novelist Iris Murdoch by her husband John Bayley; Linda Grant's account of her mother's multi-infarct dementia (which also describes Jewish migration to the UK two generations ago); and Michael Igniateff's autobiographical novel Scar Tissue. Such accounts, offering insights into how patients and carers feel, cannot but help make us better doctors.

My Title, a variation on Susan Sontag's regarding the pain of others, is meant as an homage to sontag and as an extension of her searing critique of war photography and its reflexive objectification of suffering, its conversion of victims into objets d'art. But why, in particular, the pain of women Holocaust victims here? Because we have finally begun to amass a large and profound critical literature on gender and the Holocaust, which, alongside Sontag's work on photography, might help us look at how and why the public gaze of photographers, curators, historians, and museumgoers continues to turn women into objects of memory, idealized casts of perfect suffering and victimization, and even emblems of larger Jewish suffering during the Holocaust.

Teaching materials are a set of tools or facilities that contain materials, methods and evaluations used by teachers or lecturers in learning. So far, the teaching materials released by several developers have rarely been in accordance with the needs of Mechanical Engineering students, where some of the teaching materials available still use general English. In this study, in order to compile an appropriate teaching material, researchers have conducted a needs analysis. Needs analysis is a fundamental aspect for English language lecturers for specific purposes (ESP) in identifying information or the main needs of students and investigating areas of student shortages. In line with this statement, this research is a case study design that aims to determine the needs of mechanical engineering students in learning English through Padlet at the Faculty of Engineering in the 2019-2020 academic year. The data in this study were collected from researcher observations, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 40 students and two English language lecturers in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The results revealed that speaking and writing are the main focus of English skills in the Mechanical Engineering department and listening along with reading are the next English skills needed than others.

The article is devoted to the corporate culture of an educational institution as a factor in the success of its operations. The quality of educational services, relationships in the teaching staff, the atmosphere of schools that meet the requirements of our time, the demands of the public, have a high reputation and are competitive in the educational market depends on the level of formation of corporate culture. However, the problem of the formation and development of corporate culture schools for a long time remained unnoticed today still at the periphery of research practices. Today in Ukraine corporate culture has not been reflected in the regulatory legislation and education based on the general cultural level of society, morality, business practices, etc., whose condition is caused by the level of economic development. The management of corporate culture is open and clear enough for most school leaders, and therefore there is a need to disseminate information on the role of corporate culture, mechanisms of implementation and management of its formation. The main structural elements of organizational culture seen in the mission, values, standards system to ensure the process of training, education and development of children; the attitude of teachers to the goals, objectives, results of work of educational organizations; communication and informal rules of behavior, choice of appropriate leadership styles, conditions for creativity teachers, traditions, rituals and ceremonies that are accepted in school; staff attitude to themselves as members of the teaching kolekyvu, opportunities for their personal development. We believe that the culture of an educational institution should be considered first, as a system of collective values, norms and traditions of life common students and teaching staff, and secondly, as an integral characteristic of individual school community; Thirdly, as the most important factor of socialization of students. A key step in the formation of corporate culture is to define the mission and vision of the educational institution. In the mission and goals of the institution should have reflected the basic values that are specified in the concept of school. An important role in the corporate culture of an educational institution plays a presence bright, charismatic personality of the head of school. The researchers emphasize that the most successful developing corporate culture in educational institutions, led by creative director are ready to innovate, informally linked to a function that can create a team which interact on an equal footing teachers, students their parents and the public.

West Sumatra Province is one of the provinces in Indonesia that is vulnerable to natural disasters, especially earthquakes and tsunamis. Padang city, as the capital city of West Sumatra, is an area that is included in an area with a high level of vulnerability (High Risk Zone) to tsunamis. Therefore, the construction of public buildings such as hospitals, government offices, and school buildings must have certain technical engineering that is able to anticipate the damage and collapse of buildings due to the earthquake and tsunami. One of the public buildings as an educational facility in Padang city is the Elementary School building of the 23/24 (SD 23/24 Padang), located close to the beach. Based on the evaluation results of the Detail Engineering Design (DED) documents, it is found that this building was designed without taking into account the tsunami loads. Therefore, a building assessment should be carried out to check the capacity of the building to resist the working loads, including the tsunami loads, and to investigate the effect of the tsunami loads on the SD 23/24 Padang building. In this study, the building was analyzed using ETABS v.18 software based on the new Indonesian Seismic Code, SNI 1726-2019 for seismic load and FEMA P646-2019 for calculating tsunami loads. The results show that the SD 23/24 Padang building is strong against earthquake loads, but it doesn’t have enough capacity when tsunami loads are applied, in which there are several structural elements (columns/beams) that do not have sufficient capacity to withstand the combined earthquake and tsunami loads. The effect of tsunami loads on the building structure is also discussed in this paper.

Mutual perception is an important indicator of the degree of closeness between countries, and it can more intuitively reflect the degree of mutual favorability between the two peoples and the perception of each other's national image. Mongolia's perception of China is an important fundamental aspect in the bilateral relations. This article reviews and examines the current research status of the given topic in academic circles. In general, (1) The public opinion surveys of some research institutes on Mongolia’s perception of China are relatively objective and neutral, so their survey results have higher reference value and application value. (2) Regarding the specific studies of Mongolia’s perception of China, some studies are relatively neutral, objective and of keen insights, and some are difficult to divorce from the perspective of the ‘self’ or the western interpretation mode, often presuppose their positions and tend to place too much emphasis on historical and cultural factors. Mongolia's perception of China is the result of the interaction of various factors mainly including history, emotion/psychology, realistic issues, and external factor. As rates of traditional sources of scientific funding decline, scientists have become increasingly interested in crowdfunding as a means of bringing in new money for research. In fields where crowdfunding has become a major venue for fundraising such as the arts and technology, building an audience for one’s work is key for successful crowdfunding. For science, to what extent does audience building, via engagement and outreach, increase a scientist’s abilities to bring in money via crowdfunding? Here we report on an analysis of the #SciFund Challenge, a crowdfunding experiment in which 159 scientists attempted to crowdfund their research. Using data gathered from a survey of participants, internet metrics, and logs of project donations, we find that public engagement is the key to crowdfunding success. Building an audience or “fanbase” and actively engaging with that audience as well as seeking to broaden the reach of one’s audience indirectly increases levels of funding. Audience size and effort interact to bring in more people to view a scientist’s project proposal, leading to funding. We discuss how projects capable of raising levels of funds commensurate with traditional funding agencies will need to incorporate direct involvement of the public with science. We suggest that if scientists and research institutions wish to tap this new source of funds, they will need to encourage and reward activities that allow scientists to engage with the public.

AbstractThis article studies the socioeconomics of government public expenditure for the arts and the normative foundations of state intervention in the arts. I pose two interrelated research questions: (a) what is the relationship between the public funding of the arts and their consumption? and (b) what mode of justification and what perception of the place of art in society is reflected in this relationship? Based on the philosophical work of Alan Badiou, I develop a novel conceptual framework to delineate three types of normative justifications for the public funding of arts organizations: romantic, didactic and classical. Using data from the public funding of 92 orchestras, theaters and dance troupes in Israel between 1999 and 2011, I estimate a cross-lagged panel data model to study how arts funding both affects and is affected by the levels of consumption of the organizations’ productions. The results of the study show a complex pattern of different relationships between funding and consumption that accord with the three types of normative justifications for public arts funding.
