Acetaminophen is a popular nonprescription analgesic that is often taken in overdose by adolescents during suicidal gestures. The authors hypothesized that most adolescents are naive about the toxic and lethal potential of acetaminophen in overdose. A one-page, 12-item questionnaire was administered to 169 high school students to evaluate their perceptions and knowledge in this area. Whereas only 22% of the sample underestimated the dose of acetaminophen necessary to cause harm, 40.5% underestimated the potential lethality of acetaminophen in overdose. Moreover, 17% of the sample did not believe one could ingest enough acetaminophen to cause death. The lack of knowledge about acetaminophen's potential dangerousness, its widespread availability, and an absence of early symptoms of hepatotoxicity make this medication highly dangerous to those adolescents who take it in overdose during parasuicidal behavior.

This study examined the effects of self-assessment vs. peer assessment on Japanese high school students’ writing anxiety and the validity of Cheng’s (2004) Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI). After assignment to either the self-assessment or peer-assessment condition, two groups of Japanese high school students (N=293) participated in a series of five writing and student-assessment sessions over a period of 10 days. An exploratory factor analysis was then conducted on SLWAI data collected before and after these sessions to compare the effects of the writing practice and student assessment type on the factor structure of the two groups’ writing anxiety. The results showed post-treatment factor structure differences that had not been present initially. Nevertheless, the main factor both before and after the treatment sessions was English writing avoidance due to cognitive anxiety. These findings suggest the importance of dealing with learner anxiety to improve English writing instruction.

Rata-rata miskonsepsi adalah sebesar 24.25%, False Positif sebesar 9,01%, False Negatif sebesar 4,72%, dan Lack of Knowledge sebesar 10,32% pada materi suhu dan kalor. persentase miskonsepsi tertinggi terletak pada miskonsepsi keenam (M6) sebesar 58,27%, yaitu “Ketika berada pada ruang yang sama suhu besi lebih rendah daripada suhu benda di sekitarnya”.AbstractThe misconception is a conception of someone who is not in accordance with the scientific conception possessed by experts. Misconceptions must be avoided, and if they occur, they need to be remediated because they can be a limiting factor in student learning. However, misconceptions are not easily identified; special instruments and specific steps are needed to express them. The purpose of this study is to explore, uncover, and describe students' misconceptions in temperature and heat material. The research respondents were 127 students from a favorite high school in Jambi. The instrument used for data collection was the Four-Tier Diagnostic Instrument on temperature and heat material. Data analysis was done by finding the percentage of correct answers at each level (tier) for each item and the percentage of answers to misconceptions for each category. The results showed that ten types of misconceptions in the temperature and heat material in students had been identified using nine instrument items. The average misconception is 24.25%, False Positive is 9.01%, False Negative is 4.72%, and Lack of Knowledge is 10.32% in temperature and heat material. The highest percentage of misconception lies in the sixth misconception (M6) of 58.27%, namely "When in the same room the temperature of the iron is lower than the temperature of the objects around it".

The need for enhanced engagement of school students for better behavioral outcomes in line with scientific learning and acquisition of science process skills have continually incited educators to strategize innovative teaching approaches. Meanwhile, innovations and research from the scientific community has consistently been prioritized, demanding highly skilled STEM labor in the global market, henceforth challenging educators to brace the next generation with high proficiency in STEM fields. The research study focuses on an out of school approach that caters to the industrial demands in STEM workforce, henceforth acquainting the high school students with research methodology for improving their technical efficiency and intellectual capacity in problem solving and critical thinking. The study program was conducted on 208 students from public schools in Qatar, who participated in 68 research projects, each project being engaged by a group students during a period of 2 months at Qatar University research laboratories. The performance of participants were analyzed by mixed methods implementing both quantitative data based on questionnaires and qualitative data based on feedback interviews from research mentors, schoolteachers and the participant students. The results of the program yielded positive outcomes from the stakeholders as the school students gained competences exhibited by under-graduate or graduate students like research self-efficacy, research skills and aspirations for scientific careers, accomplishing the objectives of the program. This study program henceforth was successful in bridging the gap between high school and university, as the participant students had an advantage in confidence over their peers in university laboratories and technical writing assignments.
