The issues of ‘honour’ - and in particular honour-related crimes - in modern societies undisputedly need more public reflection and discussion, especially at the meeting points of different cultures. The ‘concept of honour and shame’ - although not the only factor - is very important for understanding the background of domestic violence. This applies also - although in no way exclusively - to those Muslim family structures that are based on particular cultural traditions. The division of honour into ‘true’ and ‘artificial’ honours indicates that honour can be used to legitimate the hierarchy between members of the family. From a sociological perspective, the minimalist definition refers to honour as a right to respect. This means that honour exists both subjectively and objectively. It exists subjectively as a personal feeling as being entitled to respect. However, it exists also objectively as a public recognition of the public value of the individual. Honour/dishonour-shame always has a form of publicity.

This work represents a combination of different genres: cultural history, philosophical anthropology, and textbook. It follows a handful of different but interrelated themes through more than a dozen texts that were written over a period of several millennia. By means of an analysis of these texts, this work presents a theory about the development of Western Civilization from antiquity to the Middle Ages. The main line of argument traces the various self-conceptions of the different cultures as they developed historically. These self-conceptions reflect different views of what it is to be human. The thesis is that in these we can discern the gradual emergence of what we today call inwardness, subjectivity and individual freedom. As human civilization took its first tenuous steps, it had a very limited conception of the individual. Instead, the dominant principle was that of the wider group: the family, clan or people. Only in the course of history did the idea of what we know as individuality begin to emerge. It took millennia for this idea to be fully recognized and developed. The conception of human beings as having a sphere of inwardness and subjectivity subsequently had a sweeping impact on all aspects of culture, such as philosophy, religion, law, and art. Indeed, this conception largely constitutes what is today referred to as modernity. It is easy to lose sight of the fact that this modern conception of human subjectivity was not simply something given but rather the result of a long process of historical and cultural development.

Entangling families: State and Family in the Population of National Land Abstract The particular case analyzed in this article reveals a project of action in which state and domestic powers seem to mutually reinforce each other. It is considered here one aspect of the “Populating National Land” policy, more specifically the practices aiming to the constitution of authority chains through the appropriation of auto-organizing structures of immigrants and colonizers, namely, family structures. These practices placed immigrant and colonizers´ families at the center of the enterprise of immigrant attraction and the building up of colonies. This analysis has as its reference the contention that immigration and e colonization policies have played a role at the interior of more ample processes of National State formation. This role involves, among other aspects, the use of power techniques that, by making up a field of actions of those who were the object of these policies, have contributed to the construction of the public authority of the federal government. It is therefore shown how the family is taken both as an object and an instrument of state action, in the search for the construction of public authority.

We explore the psychological meanings of money that parallel its economic functions. We explore money's ability to ascribe value, give autonomy, and provide security for the future, and we show how each of these functions may play out differently in different cultural milieus. In particular, we explore the meanings and uses of money across ethnic groups and at different positions on the socioeconomic ladder, highlighting changes over the last 50 years. We examine the dynamics of redistribution between the individual, the family, and the state in different cultures, and we analyze the gendering of money in the world of high finance and in contexts of economic need. The field of behavioral economics has illustrated how human psychology complicates the process of moving from normative to descriptive models of human behavior; such complexity increases as we incorporate the great diversity within human psychology.

Abstract This article discusses a youth dance project called Corridor and its pedagogic and choreographic process. It introduces the author’s approach to coordinating and choreographing the project and argues for the benefits of working with youngsters cross-culturally. Corridor took place at Kuopio Dance Festival in June 2009, bringing nearly 50 young dancers from six different countries onto the Music Centre stage. The title of the event, corridor, was turned into the theme of the concrete artistic work. It expresses a kind of space and mobility between people and ideas. Spectators, as well as choreographers and dancers opened doors to different cultures – here culture refers to the live, social environment which touches us, and in which the public and the private, the collective and the individual meet. The author’s choreographic and pedagogical approach proceeds from a general to a detailed one. The work evolves in a spiral form starting from action which opens channels for relating to the present moment through dancing. Then this experienced action is shared and reflected on, either physically or verbally. The author aims at shared power and genuine dialogue. Similarly, instead of taking difference and complex dynamics as a threat, they are considered as resources and possibilities. Corridor was a part of Keðja Kuopio a project which focused on children and young people. Furthermore, Keðja Kuopio belongs to Keðja project (Dance Encounters 2008 – 2010), the vastest platform so far aimed at dance artists as well as educators, producers and scholars to meet and address important issues within the contemporary dance field in the Nordic/Baltic region.

ABSTRACT:The goal of the Canadian Migraine Forum was to work towards improving the lives of Canadians with migraine by reducing their migraine-related disability. This paper reviews the epidemiology and diagnosis of migraine, and the effects of migraine on health related quality of life. Many patients with migraine do not consult a physician for their headaches, and when they do they often do not receive a correct diagnosis. The discussion at the Forum concluded that better education, both for physicians and the public, on issues relating to migraine was a necessary step in improving migraine diagnosis. The degree of disability caused by migraine is often not recognized by society, and can be substantial for individuals with migraine. Once again, education of the public and of the health professionals who see these patients is key, so that the best migraine management can be instituted to minimize the impact of migraine on the individual, the family, and society at large.

Contemporary legislation, not only criminal and criminal proceedings law, has entered a new stage, that is currently underway and that is reflected in significant reforms and new legislation, as well as seeking new solutions to increase efficiency in preventing and combating domestic violence. The Republic of Serbia embarked on this path by adopting the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence, which should primarily intensify the preventive action of the competent state bodies in cases of domestic violence. The Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence started to be applied on June 1, 2017 and given the fact that it has been applied for the past three years, it is necessary to carry out an adequate analysis and to evaluate whether it has increased efficiency when it comes to combating domestic violence. In this regard, the subject of this paper is primarily the analysis of the practical application of urgent measures provided by the Law imposed by the police, the public prosecutor and the court. This research will cover a period of two years of applying of the law, i.e. the period from June 1, 2017 to May 31, 2019. During the research, the statistical method was used along with the methods of analysis, deduction, comparison and description. The paper will analyse: both the total and the individual number of urgent measures imposed by the police; territorial distribution of the imposed urgent measures on the territory of the Republic of Serbia; imposing of extended urgent measures by the court, and a significant aspect of this research will be dedicated to the issue of violations of the imposed urgent measures.

The article deals with criminal liability for domestic violence in Ukraine. For a considerable period of time, in many cultures and in different political regimes, the family has been considered the foundation of society. The priority of the family is enshrined in both international legal acts and the Basic Law of Ukraine. However, unfortunately, sometimes the family does not become an attribute of security and peace, but rather an attribute of quarrels, conflicts, and sometimes even of violence. Sociological surveys are also disappointing: almost 70% of women are subjected to various forms of domestic violence, and 35% of minors are systematically affected by abusive parenting. In view of the pressing social need to criminalize domestic violence, and in the context of Ukraine’s ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on the Prevention of and Violence against Women and Domestic Violence, a new Article 126-1 “Domestic Violence” was introduced in Criminal Code of Ukraine. The author analyzes the criminal responsibility for domestic violence through the prism of the composition of crime. It has been established that the main direct object of a domestic violence crime is the health of the individual. An additional optional object may be the person’s honor, his / her mental integrity, etc. The objective aspect of domestic violence can take three forms of expression: physical, psychological, and economic violence. The subject is special (a spouse or former spouse or another person who is in a family or close relationship). The subjective side of the crime is characterized by direct intent. It is concluded that the current construction of this crime is not in general contrary to the current legislation, but needs adjustments that can improve both the perception of the norm itself and the process of its implementation. Keywords: domestic violence, types of domestic violence, physical violence, economic violence, psychological violence, qualification of domestic violence, the victim of domestic violence.

Abstract Introduction Alcohol use disorder is commonly known as “alcoholism” but is also known as a family disorder, not because it runs in families but because it tends to impact the family members more than just the individual. Alcoholism is one of the leading causes of marital problems, divorce, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, and strained relationships between the partners and also between the parent and child. The per capita alcohol consumption has increased from 2.2 L (2005) to 2.7 L (2016) and is expected to increase by another 2.2 L by 2025. According to the World Health Organization, 55% of domestic violence is related to alcohol abuse by the partner. This study aims to identify the impact of alcoholism on the individual’s health as well as the family members depending on the level of alcohol dependence. Materials and Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among patients admitted in the ward with a history of alcohol intake. AUDIT-C (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test–C) questionnaire was used to detect dependence and also a structured questionnaire was used to gather information regarding the financial and psychological well-being of the family from the family member accompanying the person. Other parameters of the patient were also considered such as liver function test, abdomen ultrasonography, and upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, wherever available. Results A total of 100 patients were included in the study; 59 patients were admitted due to various reasons secondary to alcohol intake. A score of >4 was suggestive of alcohol dependence: 73% (73) of the participants had a score of >4; 65% of the participants’ family members gave a positive history of impaired interpersonal relationships; 45% gave a positive history of battering; and 69% had mental health issues such as depression, lack of confidence, inferiority complex, and decreased sleep. Also, 51% (51) gave a positive history of financial contribution by the participant toward the family expenses. Conclusion The study shows that the problems of alcohol abuse have been associated with increased suffering to the family members, which contributes to a high level of interpersonal conflict, domestic violence, financial difficulties, and psychological disturbances, along with increasing the risk of developing comorbidities associated with alcohol abuse by the individual, which further adds to burden of the family.
